An ERA under 3.00?
I’ll just be happy if he can pitch out of the bullpen in 2009.
Witty .sig goes here.

I think
The Angels should let Jon Garland go, either sign a FA starter or trade for Peavy (depending on the cost), and move Kelvim to the bullpen. He could be an upgrade over Speier as the 7th inning guy or he could close if Arredondo isn’t ready to take that job yet. Escobar has closed in the past so the role is not completely foreign to him.

Off Topic Question:
If recent history holds true, it doesn’t look good for the Rays. Since 2002, whoever has beaten the Halos in the playoffs has won the World Series.
Question Is: which other teams in recent history (since ALDS) can make that claim as much as the Halos?

Whuh???????? Huh?????????
We need motivation to make the playoffs ! I hope not! We need motivation to win a playoff series or two and get to the WS.

I continue to be baffled about the fans and Kelvim....
There are so many people here who have this idea that he should be moved to the bullpen. I guess the man reason for this is that he’s worked out of the bullpen before, so that would be the answer to are glut of starters and the help we need in the bullpen.
It’s BS.
Let me get this straight: You wanna take a guy that just threw 196 innings in 2007; a guy who’s thrown at least 180 innings 4 of the past 6 seasons, with an average ERA in the mid 3’s, and you wanna put that guy in the bullpen?
Escobar was deservedly in the Cy Young conversation just a litle more than a year ago. He had a tremendous season. He had a 3.4 ERA in almost 200 innings. Why shouldn’t he be a starter, because we have Weaver? Hey, he just came out of the pen, let’s put HIM in there…
Seriously. Why waste 120 innings, when you can have Escobar throw 190 innings instead of 70, and with a mid 3 ERA to boot?

The idea of putting him in the 'pen is related to his health.
Coming off of the injury/surgery, it would be…very optimistic to expect 190 innings out of him.
His doctor(s) and Angel training staff will likely monitor him closely. I believe the consensus guess is that he will be brought along slowly.
If his shoulder remains pain-free – and if the team needs another starter – he may return to that role in 2009.
Regardless of post- season moves, I highly doubt the Angels will start 2009 assuming Escobar will be the 5th starter.

Kelvim also threw 0.0 major league innings in 2008
And will be coming back from arm troubles.
Give the guy a bit of a break.
If GA wasn't so Lazy, I'd have something clever here.

Health
As two others have already noted, the collective thinking seems to be that it might not be realistic to expect Escobar to be able to throw 100 pitches every five days. That’s really the only reason. The fact that previously he has pitched successfully out of the bullpen supports such a move; it’s not as if it would be a grand experiment.
