Farm system switch up
Was wondering if someone could explain the farm system switchup that occurred around 2000.
Previous to the switch, the Angels farm teams were something like:
A - Elsinore, CA
AA - Bend, OR
AAA - Midland, TX
I'm probably not remembering all of the levels or the cities accurately, but obviously all of our farm teams are now in different cities. I didn't used to pay much attention to the farm system, so I didn't really catch what happened... Did all organizations move their teams around? or was it just us? and why?
Thanks!

Well, I do know that the Quakes
were recently a Padres affiliate, before they became an Angels one…it just happens in baseball. Teams occasionally trade off affiliates. The players on the team just become members of a new team in a different location. Not sure why it really need be done, but I’ve seen it happen a handful of times.
Reason from wikipedia:
Affiliations between teams can change for a variety of reasons. Sometimes Major or Minor League Clubs wish to affiliate with a partner that is geographically closer. Sometimes a Minor League Club wishes to improve the caliber of players its Major League affiliate sends to play there. Sometimes a Major League Club wishes to improve the facility where it will send its developing players. In even-numbered years, any Major or Minor League club with an expiring PDC may notify Major League Baseball or Minor League Baseball, respectively, of its desire to explore a reaffiliation with a different PDC partner. The Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball offices then send a list of the corresponding Major and Minor League Clubs seeking new affiliations, and there is a limited period of time in September within which clubs may agree upon new PDCs. If any are left over after this process, the Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball offices are empowered to assign Major and Minor League clubs to each other.

minor affiliations
A few minor league teams are owned outright by the major league franchise, but mostly they just sign development deals. They are almost always in multiples of 2 years, so every 2 years there is a changeover to find better matches. (Sometimes an excellent match is found, leading to long associations, like our deal with Salt Lake.) This offseason is one of those changeover years. Also, some minor league teams are continually moving to new cities with better stadiums and deals. The California league went through major changes a few years ago.
From this page here you can track the changes since 1990:
good info, thanks!
Q: What's the difference between A-Rod and Madonna? A: Madonna had a couple hits last October...
The Halos had a AA team in Erie for a couple of years too...
around 1997-2000.
That staff was supposed to be the next big thing…
Brian Cooper, Seth Etherton, Mark Haringer (sp?), Elvin Nina and someone else…
Anyway, a crud-load of flame outs there.
Jim Scully
yeah
I’ll bet our boys are glad not to be playing there anymore.

does anyone know WHY we switched?
If the Red Sox and Dodgers play for the World Series, I will not watch a single minute of a single game.
Who knows? The shadow knows.
No idea as to the exact reason of the switch. But minor league affiliates are always looking for more popular teams (especially the Yankees and Cubs), plus major league teams always want their minor league teams to be closer. Also, after awhile they just get sick of each other. Like if the minor league team has a bad record too often due to crappy players, they want out.
Another great page if you actually care about this stuff:
ah that’s right…
AAA – Edmonton
AA – Midland
A – Elsinore
When they make these switches, the whole team moves, right? They don’t just swap AAA teams with some other organization, right?
Q: What's the difference between A-Rod and Madonna? A: Madonna had a couple hits last October...
The players move
laundry stays.
If GA wasn't so Lazy, I'd have something clever here.
