Angels WHAT TO DO: Vladimir Guerrero
WHAT TO DO is our offseason feature examining a 2008 Angel player each day to discuss where the player fits in the club's plans for 2009.
Vladimir Guerrero has a club option for 2009 that will pay him $15 Million. The Club can buy it out for $3 Million and Vlad will become a free agent. He turns 33 in February.

Pick up Option
Try to sign him to a 3 year contract, with a club option for the 4th year.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree.. You have to pick up the option… Vlad fulfilled his end of the deal and was worth EVERY penny he earned… As for an extension, I would guess you have to start at 3-5 years, maybe Vlad thinks he should get a 5 year deal…A Vladimir Guerrero is going to get 15 million somewhere..He showed again this year that he is one in a lifetime player and I think he deserves the benfit of the doubt…He has done a lot for this club over 5 years…As for being tired of this player,I highly doubt the team would be where it was the last 5 years minus Vladimir Guerrero..thats all I will say on that !!!!!

Pick Up the Option...
Sign him to a 3 year deal before next season is over under the condition that he becomes a full-time DH.
Patiently wait for him to enter the Hall as a Halo.
Perhaps you've heard of me from the pages of Sports Illustrated...
by Northwest on Oct 13, 2008 2:22 AM PDT 0 recs
Get rid of him.
I’m tired of this old, arthritic, unintelligent play. He’s lucky he doesn’t play in New York, otherwise he would get ripped to shreds with his AROD-esque postseason numbers.
One RBI in his last 64 postseason at-bats? I would say the Vladimir experiment has been a failure. He cleans up against crappy pitching, but when it counts, he is no Manny. At least he makes up for it with great baserunning. Oh wait…
This team needs smarter baseball players. I would consider picking up his option with one caveat: he has to learn to speak English.
Your defending OPD champion. Respect it, bitches.

Cut ties now, he is on the down slope of his career and think you can save 15 million and you can get a couple draft picks for him. He can’t run or play right field any more and he does not want to DH so I say bye bye.

Yeah, replace him with Gary Matthew Junior,if you wanna talk about over paid players !! He never said he wouldn’t DH either,he just said he thinks he is capable of playiong the OF,which I think he is a few times a week…I’dl ike to see a Barry Bonds approach with him,as you play him a few games in the OF but DH him as much as you can.. Do you want Guerrero facing your pitching staff playing for the Yanks or the Bo Sox ??? I think it a bad idea to not pick up the option,as for an extension, thats up to the team, but if I was in charge he is priority number 1.. Your best offensive player by FAR for 5 years !!!!!!

25+ bombs and 100+ RBI for 11 years
Those are HOF numbers, my friend. The playoffs don’t count unless you get there. Without Vlad, the Angels have a harder time getting there.
BTW, smarter baseball players don’t necessarily have to speak any English at all, so your “speak English” blast is as ignorant as it is ignorant.

Pick Up 2009, Wait and See...
I like Vladdy and all, but he’s one of the main reasons the Angels disappear every October. I would’ve rather seen the Rangers win the West this year because they could’ve made it interesting, but with our cleanup hitting’s terrible pitch selection and base-running, you have to consider the possibility that maybe he isn’t the linchpin of your offense anymore. Pick him up because he’ll still hit .300 with 25 dingers, but acknowledge that he’s on the decline and perhaps someone is wiling to pay him more in 2010 and let him test free agency.
He’s worth 10-12 million right now, but in 2010, 11, 12? At this rate, not that much. As his physical skills start to deteriorate (and scouts all over have been shouting this since the start of the season), elements like a good batting eye come into play, and Vladdy just doesn’t have one.

hold on to him
even if he is declining in ability, he has an indirect effect on how opposing pitchers deal with our lineup. he is a good weapon to have even if he doesn’t have the firepower of five years ago. put tex in front of him for a full season and his numbers will look strikingly good next year.
If the Red Sox and Dodgers play for the World Series, I will not watch a single minute of a single game.

Obviously you exercise his option for 2009...
…then you sign Tex to whatever Arte is willing to pay! Vlad actually had decent plate discipline in the 4 postseason games this year. Vlad seemed to thrive batting behind Tex now let him prove that over 162 games in 2009. If some of the Tex discipline rubs off, Vlad will become a better player! If not, give him the heave ho after 2009 cuz he is going nowhere but down…if we re-sign him after that he will only drag this team down with him!
1. Sign Tex!
2. I want to see what a contract drive might do for incentive for Vlad?!
3. How about arthroscopic surgery to clean up some of that cartilage damage in those knees?!
Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August, er September, er October...? Miss ya Kotch, but Tex is THE man!

The knee damage...
…I have heard no discussion of how bad, and if/when for surgery…unless I missed it.
Team management should make Vlad’s knees a priority…if they have not done it already. Sometimes he looks like he’s running barefoot over a field of pebbles. Watching him run is painful.

I can hardly believe some of these posts...
how can any Angel fan really want to get rid of Vlad?! Are you freakin nuts?! Why don’t we just get rid of Lackey while were at it too right?
As for Vlad, I agree that he NEEDS to get the knee surgerys done. No more resting it int he offseason because every year he rests them and they get better in the offseason, and then he starts hurting halfway through the season. Vlad, please get the surgeries done, we need you at 100% all year long, especially at the end of the year when your knees hurt the worst!
As for extending him, we need to get that done too. I say do the extension now if he has the knee surgeries, wait if he doesn’t. Once he plays at 100% all year long, I bet he will put up 2004 like numbers again.
Give him 5 a five year extension. Vlad needs to retire in an Angel uniform. Those that want him somewhere else…I can think of some choice words for you, but I’ll just think them in my head.

Good Postseason Batting Eye?
I can’t tell you how many fat wheelhouse pitches Vladdy let go by as part of his “discipline” in the postseason. He seems to commit to a pitch while the pitcher is winding up.
True, he did better at staying away from bad balls in strikeout counts and therefore never looked atrocious, but he could’ve killed those first-pitch strikes, especially from Lester.

You definitely pick up the option for next year
After that You have to see what happens with signing Teixeira. Then look at where the budget will be, and sign him to extension based on that.
Also, tell him to go get surgery done on his knees now, that way, he will extend his playing career by a few years.

Dave Smith mentioned buying out Vlad’s option and pursuing Manny. Grant it, you have to say outrageous things to get people to tune in, but that blew my mind.
But…
What if we lose out on the Teixera pursuit we sign Manny. Give Vlad a heavily incentive based contract and go after Manny. Our line up could look like this…
3B Figgins
2B Kendrick
LF Manny
DH Vlad
CF Hunter
1B Morales
C Naps
RF GMJ
SS Aybar/Izturis/Wood
by Jay Cal on Oct 13, 2008 2:59 PM PDT 0 recs
I don’t think Manny is playing for the Angels…and as far as I am concerned, Manny is not that much better then Guerrero now anyway,he has just benefited from having more protection through his career.
Vlad reached 30 doubles and 25 hr… he would of had 100 rbi had it not been for Iztris hitting 3rd and the Tex pick up.. Look at Magglio Ordonez, his numbers were down this year, does that mean he is in decline…Don’t get me started on Vernon Wells…
Why anyone would want to get rid of him is beyond me. I guess it would be thanks for the 5 years, have fun finishing yer HOF career elsewhere !

i dont think that really needs to be discussed. he’s vlad and he’s gonna keep putting up great numbers. other good hitters around him only increase his numbers.

I can't believe the people criticizing his postseason
Vlad just had the best postseason of his career. He OPSed 1.100!! You know why he had no RBI’s? Figgins and Garret were never on base in front of him. You can’t blame that on Vlad.
Pick up the option. If he gets the knee surgery, sign him to a 3 year extension. If he doesn’t, I’m thinking we need to let him go. I could foresee him going downhill pretty quickly if he doesn’t get his knees healthy. I love Vlad and want to see him stay an Angel, but if he’s not healthy, he’s not going to be worth the money he’s going to want in 2011 – 2012.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
by Gorbachav5 on Oct 13, 2008 5:35 PM PDT 0 recs
Yeah.. I am with you here.. I seen him lead off plenty of innings this postseason..You can’t blame one player, the team didn’t play well enough, not just one player, but this has followed him his whole career. Many doubters and people wanting to see him fall off..I would say he has had a very quiet career, nearing 400 career home runs, over 2,000 hits and a great BA..He never seemed to have many people back him as he was leaving Montreal… I can remember his last game when he got taken out in the 7th inning he got a standing ovation to whatever the size crowd was left..He went out on a tear in Montreal, hit for the cycle and got his 25th hr…he was loved in Montreal, though no MLB teams really took an intrest.. He had a great accomplishment this year, tying Gehrigs streak, which has flown under the radar.
To me,wherever he goes and whatever he does hes still my favourite player… I would like to see him hit number 400 next year early at home, hope its with LAA.
I think he would be a great DH if he learned how to just hit(dh)…If he went at it knowing he was just hitting,I think it would be a great benefit.

Agree. Picking up the option is a no-brainer.
See how next season goes before signing him to an extension. We need to see if he can keep his knees healthy, as his production has been slipping. Maybe if he’s the permanent DH, he can maintain at least his current level of production.
I think you can blame management for his decline, as it’s been clear for the past 2 years he shouldn’t be patrolling RF. I’d love to see Vlad around for a few more years, but more importantly, I don’t want to see him become a shell of his former self.

Picking up his option is a no brainer….pick it up yesterday….
Insist on getting his knees scoped and cleaned out. Once that is done and he is cleared by Dr’s Yocum and Limpisvasti sign him to a three-four year extension He is still someone to build a line up around.
If he opts to not get his knees scoped, pick up his option and wait and see. See how he perfroms in a contract year with bum knees! I am not comfortable in signing him long term until we have some assurance of his health….

Let him go
If you can sign him for cheap, keep him, but in all honesty it took him a LONG time to get going this year, he’s not a very good fielder, he hit into a LOT of double plays this year, and he completely chokes in the post season. He is the A-Rod of the West in the post season. I think it’s more important to build the team around Teixiera and Hunter and thank Vlad for his service.
by dprice413 on Oct 14, 2008 7:59 PM PDT 0 recs
i wouldnt say he choked this year in the postseason
look at his post-tex numbers. the guy is a beast who just needed some protection. he was pitched around all year, and then with tex pitchers were forced to pitch to him. yeah he lead in gidp, and hes not the greatest fielder, but the guy puts up consistently great numbers. the knee surgery is what he really needs. pick up the option, make him get the surgery, then extend him.

That may be true, but...
I agree he did better after Tex got to the team, but if the Angels are unable to sign Tex, which is a big fear I have, then they are right back to square one and he will just be pitched around again. I really think they need to resign Tex and build the team around Tex and Hunter. You have to figure the rest of the AL West is going to be pretty aggressive in making changes this year, so the Angels need to be able to keep up with that – especially since the AL West is the only championship we can look forward to! I don’t think Kendry Morales or Mark Trumbo are ready for full-time duties at first base. We need more proven, post season pop in our lineup. I’d even settle for Manny! Which you know they will probably sign another outfielder this off season – which one will it be?

Vlad deserves a chance to show his worth to Arte and Tony.
Pickup the option. That part of it is a no brainer.
Tell him that he MUST have surgery, immediately. That way he can come into camp healthy and LEAN. This season he showed up out of shape, and due to his wheels he was never able to get into the kind of fighting shape he needs to be in. Vlad’s age is starting to become an issue; he can’t depend on spring training to get into shape anymore. He needs to understand that it’s a year round thing now to solidify his legacy.
If he does these things this offseason, he will come in ready to mash. And when he does come in healthy, and mashing, we should then get him the extension he would deserve, we could get it done early in the season once he’s demonstrated the work ethic and the dedication.
It’s completely unfair to criticize Vlad’s postseason this year. True, he didn’t hit for power, but he certainly DID show great discipline at the plate, and other than that game 1 base running mistake he was one of our most productive bats against Boston. It’s not his fault that every time he came up there was only Tex on 1st base; my earlier post showed he only had 4 AB’s with RISP in that series, and two of those times he walked. He was stellar at the plate.
Over the past few years we’ve had long stretches in whcih Vlad literally carried this franchise on those aching knees. I find it hard to read some of the posts here. It’s been his stadium the whole time he’s been here, and it’s been our priviledge to watch this guy’s instinctive genius at the plate. He’s Manny Sanguillen to the nth power. He reminds me of Clemente, and he certainly would’ve fit right in with that Pirate team of free swingers..
Vlad should be our first HOF player. If he shows the discipline to continue his greatness by doing things the right way, getting his knees fixed and dedicating himself to conditioning and diet, his situation should take care of itself. And that would be as a Halo for quite some time. A small part of me worries about his power numbers declining, but fixing his injuries should cure that. I’d love to see him and Tex hitting 3 and 4 for several years to come…
by goodvibe61 on Oct 14, 2008 10:10 PM PDT 0 recs
Stellar at the plate???
Granted, I couldn’t watch the games in their entirety because I’m pregnant and already suffering from high blood pressure and their play almost pushed me to the boiling point a couple of times, but the only person in our lineup that had a home run(s) was Napoli, and GA did well, Tex did well, and Hunter did well. Vlad was hit or miss, and the last 4 or 5 batters in our lineup were MISS for the most part. I think Vlad is loyal enough to the organization to take less money to make room for Tex, which would be great, but he’s very slowly and steadily becoming not worth the millions we have set up to pay him.
What do the Red Sox and the Rays have that we don’t have that allows them to be successful in the post season? Is it the players? Is it the coaches? Is it the management? I think the Angels organization needs a big shake-up, but I don’t know what exactly, and I doubt it will happen.
