Let him walk. Go younger.
Another weak postseason performance. We don’t need that going forward.

So cut $1M/year off the deal
and include a hair guy/girl instead?

He doesn't add
anything or bring anything to the team. Another playoff blunder which is something we do not need any more. No future upside, he is at his peak so I say let him go.

If we let players go based on our playoff performance,
we should let every hitter go except Hunter – the only man who could hit with RISP.

I think his consistency during the regular season
wasn’t really there. He’d do alright but it’d be a pleasant surprise to me when he hit a HR.

he's a good player
but nothing terribly above average, it seems.
i say let him walk too… give him a chance to play full time somewhere else.
Kotch would've had that.

Let him go
It’s unfortunate that he broke his leg right after his best season with the Angels because it took away a season and a half in which he could have established himself as the player he was expected to be. Hopefully he can find a job where he is not blocked by an insane amount of outfielders again.

If we can use his salary to sign a better player..
I say…Adios JUAN

Depends on GMJr and Tex
Weren’t most HHers ecstatic when Juan finally beat out Matthews for a spot? And didn’t he start off hot? He slumped toward the end, and Matthews coincidentally heated up, but Juan showed he’s still got it. He will be the biggest bargain free agent out there. If we can trade GMJr, we won’t have a surplus of OF’s anymore. And if we are going to lose Tex, we’ve got to keep all the power we can. In that case, keep Juan.

BENCH GMJ and start him in LF.

Completely depends
I think what we do with Rivera completely depends on what we do with Anderson, Vlad and Teixeira. GMJ is here for at least one more year, there’s no getting around that. But I think Morales is ready to step in to Rivera’s role if we get Teix or someone else to play first. If we cut Tex, Vlad and Anderson loose, which I don’t see happening, then we should re-sign Rivera.
Barring that, we should let him go. I feel bad that he never really got an opportunity to start again after that good year he had, but that’s the way things go. Thanks for the hard work Juan.

GMJ or Juan
seems to be the real question. I know GMJ is around for another year but I think shopping him (Matthews) around and see what we can get would be a good idea. I say sign Juan but 2 years at max.The dude had some serious clutch games. I think using Juan as a 4th outfielder and occasional DH is a possibility. For a bench player hes yields a pretty big stick. Plus, who can forget the inning at second base!!
No doubt, we have way too many outfielders and one or two has to go. I’d pick Juan over Willits.
I say keep him but nothing too big or long.

i don't care too much either way
but if he stays, he needs to be the opening day starter over gmj

gut says to keep him
if only for the matter of keeping GMJ on the bench. but my brain says let him go and have the extra $$ for Tex. If we resign Tex and let GA and Rivera walk our OF could be Figgy, Torii, and Kmo in RF. Get wood at 3B and im starting Izzy at short. Howie and Tex round out the IF .. Naps plays 120+ games. Get the power bats in there everyday esp. the young ones (Wood, Kendry)

let him go
save the money for Tex or Manny. if it’s Tex, put GMJ in LF, i have a feeling he’s gonna have a great season to make up for this year’s suckage. if it’s Manny, hopefully GMJ waives the clause. if it’s manny and tex…wow, never mind.

He's a 30 yr old utility player with pop
The thing is, a lot of teams have expressed interest in him, and could help him reach his full potential. He’s going to get a full time starting position somewhere and will get the consistent ABs he needs to prove his value… but it will be too late (for us) as we watch him excel on another team. If it weren’t for Juice and his big gray cloud of a contract that keeps following us around, JR would be a great fit for us.

Juan Rivera hit 12 HRs in 256 ABs. Garret Anderson hit 15 HRs in 557 ABs. Potential production versus sentimental emotions.
JR is an inexpensive power hitter, who if given consistent playing time, I think can produce something in line with his 2006 season. Sadly, I think management is going to let JR go in favor of a washed up Anderson. I’d like to see the team at least offer JR arbitratrion, if not a 2 or maybe 3 year deal at perhaps $5mil per year.
JR could play RF. Morales could play LF. Vlad gets healthy knees and the DH role to earn a contract extension. If we aren’t able to resign Tex, Morales would be at 1B with at 1B. This would leave LF open for some power hitter with good OBP skills (clearly this does not describe GA).
by snowhor on Oct 14, 2008 9:33 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll go with sentimentality
Also noting that Rivera OBPed a sweet .280 last season. 12 HR’s or not, that’s ugly. And believe it or not GA also plays a better LF.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!

OBP
is what really concerns me here. He’s never been a great OBP guy, but he had enough ABs last year, and anything under .300 is simply atrocious.
He’s better than GMJr., but ultimately I think it would be a mistake to invest anything more than a token sum on a player who’s simply marginally better. This is a way of saying that the money would be better spent elsewhere, such as sweetening a package for Teix, and maybe picking up a cheap free agent or non-tender early in the spring for some OF depth.
by jjackflash on Oct 15, 2008 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with the OBP concerns, which is why I'd hestitate before doing something for 2 or more years.
He did have a .362 OBP when given an everyday job in 2006. I’d bring him back for a year over GA, as .362 is better than GA’s ever had in his career.

As others have said,...
my concern is that if we buy out GA and don’t re-sign him for whatever reason and we let Rivera walk, then Gary No-thank-ews Jr. becomes an every-day player. That is utterly unacceptable. I guess it could work if the Halos are confident enough in Kendry Morales to make him a starting outfielder. Of course, the only way he becomes a starting outfielder is if we re-sign Teixeira or acquire another 1st baseman via free agency or trade.
by Chzburger Jones on Oct 14, 2008 10:06 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I say sign Rivera
If he plays everyday he should produce around 25 homers and drive in 90 plus runs. Unfortunately, the Angels will likely give GMJ yet another opportunity to play everyday because of his contract and will probably resign GA to play everyday for sentimental reasons.
by stolenbases on Oct 14, 2008 10:33 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Look, sign the guy.
We would get great value for what he could accomplish if only we’d play the guy EVERY DAY.
Forget this year. He basically showed what he can do in stretches. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t get to start playing with any regularity for 2 and a half months, and it took him time to get into a rhythm. Still, he would’ve hit 25 HR"s if he’d played all year. And drove in 90 for sure.
We haven’t let Juan develop. And you know what? The guy has been a total team player. He has said sh%t about all the time he’s sat wasting his talent while Mike’s played GMJ or GA or Reggie Freaking Willits instead of him. He’s a great teammate! And he’s got great power, which we should be using!
We’re not the Yankees; we can’t have every position player making 20 mil a year. Juan could be a very productive player for a good price.
Sign him.
What I believe will happen is that someone will make a nice offer, while we negotiate with GA or something like that, and Juan will be gone to grow into a very productive player in someone else’s system. I hope it doesn’t go that way. I wish the Angels could make up to him what they’ve taken away from him. It’s a business I guess!

Juan Rivera's
OBP was under .300. Yes he had only 256 ABs or something like that but once he got into the lineup he became a regular and 200+ regular ABs should be enough to establish some consistency. So even though he didn’t play the full season, that stll concerns me a bit. GA is a scarce left handed bat in this lineup and even though he doesn’t have as much power as Rivera, he is a more complete hitter who can hit for a high average and drive in runs consistently. His OBP doesn’t exactly wow me (.325 in 2008, .327 lifetime) either but at least we know what to expect out of GA every year. 15 homers give or take a little, 90 RBIs give or take a little, and a .290 average, give or take a little. Yes, clearly the 2006 Juan Rivera is much better than the current GA, but is it reasonable to assume he can return to that form? It’s definitely possible but I think just assuming it will happen is wishful thinking.

JR is 30, GA is 36. JR's lifetime OBP is .331 compared to GA's .327.
I think it’s more wishful thinking to expect production from GA than to expect JR to approach his 2006 numbers. He may not match them, but he doesn’t have to in order to out-shine GA.

Let Him Go
I like Juan Rivera and think he’s a .280/25 kind of hitter, but I’d prefer moving Figgy over to left and Wood to third, and with Willits already as a fourth outfielder, Rivera is better off elsewhere. Also, he reminds me of GA, something of a rhythm hitter, woh needs to play daily to get into that groove, and the Angels don’t have the AB for him unless they don’t want to give Wood, who had a solid September, the experience he needs to take the next step.
by Kernel on Oct 15, 2008 8:00 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sign Him
And sign him early to lock him up. Offer him 2 years for a total of $8M. Other teams are going to go after him as he is a cheap piece of the puzzle with alot of upside.
The only way this works is if management gives him a fair chance to win a starting OF job this spring. I would like to see only one of GA (assuming they bring back GA) or Vlad in the OF at any given time, meaning one will be at DH. That means the third OF spot at this point would be a battle between GMJ/Rivera/Willits/ Morales (prob take morales out as he will be at 1b) /Evans (or use his as trade bait). Whoever performs the best during the spring get the job for 150 At bats and then if a change is needed pull the trigger. If Juan doesn’t win the job, start shopping him, and try and get .60c on the dollar.
That depressed feeling in my stomach is the end of the 2008 Halos season!!!!
