Angels WHAT TO DO: Darren Oliver
Darren Oliver is a free agent. He made $3.75 Million in two years as an Angel. He was our only lefty in the pen. Darren was born one week before HalosHeaven poster Wayne YesWeCan, meaning he just turned 38 years very old.

Can we change the titles of these threads to "Whadda Do?"
WHAT TO DO sounds too demanding and definite like, if you don’t decide now or with extreme urgency, something bad may happen. Can we just be a little more laid back about it please?
Oh yeah, keep Darren Oliver, he is good and I feel comfortable with him. He has a usually dependable arm. 38 is not old, it is prime, so don’t worry yeswecan and Darren, you all have a lot of good years left.

Keep him if in the 4-5/2 yr range
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

1 year deal with some incentives (i like incentives deals)
4-5 mil? hes a good arm out of the pen, and if worst came to worst (hopefully it never will) he used to start back in the day…so yeah.
and we dont have any other leftys out there in the pen anyways, so we need to hold on to some.
by linkbruin on Oct 15, 2008 3:51 AM PDT 0 recs
He was aces this year.
No reason to think he will slip a ton next year. We need a good lefty, a reliable reliever, and Oliver has been better than most in our pen (or most pens) all season.
By all means, sign him up again.

4-5 years/12 million
oh wait…i mean 1 year/2 mil
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Oct 15, 2008 6:36 AM PDT 0 recs
definitely keep him
whatever it takes to outbid everyone else…
so long as that is 2yr/4mil or below.
If the Red Sox and Dodgers play for the World Series, I will not watch a single minute of a single game.

Oliver's a Type A free Agent
So if the Angels offer him arbitration, another team will probably be unwilling to give up a first round draft pick to sign him since he’s 38 years old.
Angels should offer him a one year deal in the range of $3M – $4M with an option year to avoid arbitration.

Solid Arm, Do It Again
He’s been a steady presence out of the ’pen; bring him back for 1-2 years, $2-4 mill per. I like the idea of incentives, like innings pitched.
by Kernel on Oct 15, 2008 7:58 AM PDT 0 recs
Resign him
he was nails all year, and we’ll need a lefty unless we go and sign fuentes. If not he is a solid option.
also, can we have a what to do with: Mickey Hatcher. I think he has gots to go.

Re-sign him
If you can get him for one year, $2-3 per. He’s been very good for us.

D. Oliver has found his nitch
After years of bouncing from starter to the pen and back to starter he has finally settled in as a reliable LHP out of the pen.
In the last 3 years he has not started a game and shown the ability to pitch out of the pen with success. He has appeared in 160gms going 14-3 with a 3.64 ERA 60BB/159K’s WHIP 1.18
I say sign the guy and do it quickly as he is the only LHP out of the pen and he has a few good years left in the arm. He has been solid and there will be a bunch of clubs looking to acquire a set up lefty for the pen. Give him the 2yr deal for $7.5-8m and a 3rd year option that kicks in should he appear in 110 games.

1 year deal with incentives
much like the last one.
if he resigns, wonderful. he was absolutely nails this year
Kotch would've had that.
by howiestheman on Oct 15, 2008 9:25 AM PDT 0 recs
Re-sign him
Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August, er September, er October...? Miss ya Kotch, but Tex is THE man!

Arbitration
Then offer a one year deal if he rejects it. If someone else signs him smile and take the draft picks.
The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

Situational Lefty, very consistent. Ageless Wonder.

Never been a huge fan
since he caused me untold mental cruelty in a game I went to early ’07. Came in and sucked the life out of the stadium (very difficult these days) by exhibiting two and only two abilities:
1) sweating profusely; this despite also
2) throwing a pitch every 8 or 9 minutes
Basically he was Hector Carrasco esp. in the complete inability to mop up in mop up situations. HOWEVER since around mid-‘07 he’s somehow turned it around and been pretty damn good, went to Game 1 when he got that huge K of Ortiz so he has atoned. Also whether we have Tex or not the Angels are gonna have to be frugal in some areas and try to get max bang for their buck and it looks like they could do that with another year or two of Oliver.
by LUVtheLAA on Oct 15, 2008 12:22 PM PDT 0 recs
hahahaha
i like oliver but i love you’re complaints. this guy throws two pitches and he is up there taking the cap off wiping away his brow til kingdom come.

I like Olly.
We need lefties out of the pen. We could probably use another one to go along with him. Brian Fuentes, anyone?

I'd like to see him stay
The time is out of joint; oh cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right.

Not too many people come to Anaheim to revitalize their careers. Something in the OC air sits well with Olly, so let’s not fight it..

Sign him to a 1 year deal with an option for a 2nd
He’s been solid for about a year and a half and seems really comfortable in Anaheim.
by stolenbases on Oct 16, 2008 12:36 AM PDT 0 recs
He neither helps nor hurts...
If they sign him, they shouldn’t spend much money. Obviously average at what he does. But he’s old and he’s got nowhere to go but down.
by waters96 on Oct 16, 2008 12:40 AM PDT 0 recs
Good thing the Angels didn't take your approach with him
D. Oliver was a 12 year big leaguer pitching his 34 yr old year in Triple A ball in 2005 before he was released 3 times that season never pitching in the bigs that year.
Guy was almost out of baseball before Omar Minaya a former Ranger scout and current Mets G.M. guy brought him to camp with the Mets.
He was old then and all he has done since the 2006 year is go UP
