TBS announcers are favoring the White Sox over the Rays.

I guess they just pick a side and go with it.

I think it's actually

That they have the word “Sox” in their team name.

The announcers probably j—z just THINKING about the other team with that word.

This is the advantage to being really, really bad for a long, long time

First round draft picks.

Does that mean the system works?

It seem like a lot of fans on other sites ( I will not mention) root for their team to lose to get the draft picks. That seems kind of sad to me, you should root for your team to win no matter what.

At some point in a losing season the higher draft pick

may actually be better for the team.

Since this match is listed in the heading with the other matches, does it mean we are allowed to freely comment about it while it is going on, or will our moose get dressed?

isn't tonight a home game for Biden?

i mean, given the moderator, i think he has home-field advantage. :P

man… those Rays look like they belong. they’re relaxed and playing their game – something we know nothing about in October.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 2, 2008 2:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i'll give you that

but again, the mod is writing a book about Obama. there has to be some sort of advantage there…

maybe it’s like us in the ‘04 playoffs… it’s technically Palin’s home-field, but most of the people there are going for the visitor.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 2, 2008 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know how she made it through either

The McCain campaign agreed on Gwen Ifill being the moderator long after she announced her book. Nice try.

The Rays confidence in their game has been pretty remarkable all year. I think that has really carried them through to this point.

by howiestheman on Oct 2, 2008 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ifill did an interview in the Washington Post about the book on September 9th.

It kind of indicates to me maybe the McCain campaign fails to do their homework properly. I think Ifill will probably be fair, if not she will catch hell for it, and Palin will come out smelling like a rose with the golden excuse that the moderator was’nt being fair. The bar has been set so low now, Palin just needs to just appear at the debate to have done well.

Daily Show and Colbert are just not that interesting to me. Not really my thing, those shows seem to appeal to younger audiences more.

A hundred+ cable channels and there is nothing better on?

Admit it, you love SNL. You think it’s currently relevant enough that it turned Tina Fey into a “superstar.” I bet most people in this country don’t know who the hell Tina Fey is nor do they care. SNL is so full of itself it now seems to think it can get by on its own reputation from the days when it was actually (mildly) funny.

Personally, I would rather watch the Magic Bullet infomercial than watch SNL.

im fairly sure he said it for both

as in evaluate presidential qualities for both.

and it is a fact that mccain is the oldest person to run for a first term in office, and, like it or not, his age and health are a factor in this. i dont think anyone is saying mccain is going to drop dead in a few months, but people are mortal and the vp is next in line. thats essentially their job, cast never-needed tie breaking votes in the senate and wait for the president to keel over. so as a “president-in-waiting” we have to look at them as a possible prez. no one is sure and thats the point. so no need to get offended with the mccain age comment.

mainstream america.. what you hear about. what the media tells you the most about.
LIBERAL.

that a good enough definition?

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 2, 2008 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh the liberal media

if thats not a dead horse i dont know what is.

i was asking a question. what is mainstream america? i mean they were being “offended” so i wanted to know actually.

if mainstream america is the accent you were referring to, thats also not true. most of america lives on the coasts and does not share said accent. there are different accents yes, but i wouldnt call hers (palin’s) mainstream.

the media is a big beast that cant be defined with a liberal or conservative label. i could go on and on about this. but the media doesnt really lend itself to nice little categorical definitions. you have things like fox news and talk radio, where do they fit in the liberal media definition?

and the most watched form of this media beast we’re discussing is local news. and thats generally intended to scare people. Fear-mongering….fear outsiders, consumer products, etc etc. Thats just plain fear, no lean

the liberal media label is done with zero analysis, and is tiresome. theres a much bigger picture to look at. theres no such thing as unbiased news, but its not a one-sided bias. not even close.

yeah sure, when you don't listen to what they say

they have nothing to run on.

what does Obama have? one word. one effing word that’s appealing to people’s emotions. change. that’s it. he has no stance on ANYTHING whatsoever… just an appeal to emotion.

racism? wow, there’s a first. they have YET to bring up anything racist.

people dont vote on issues

sad but true. thats why theres the attacks and the appeals to emotion. both sides do it. people dont listen to the issues.

obama does have stances on issues. as does mccain. but that is not what neither is running their campaign on. its “change vs the maverick”. Thats it. Thats the campaign. Done.

record low approval numbers will do that

palin and mccain do not want any association with the bush administration. thats political suicide. their issue stances are very similar, thats why its funny to see republicans running from bush like he has smallpox or something

THE ONLY THING WITH A LOWER APPROVAL THAN BUSH IS...

…CONGRESS.

yep. Where Obama and McCain reside.

by Rev Halofan on Oct 3, 2008 2:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

people always hate congress

since the onset of public opinion polling, congress always has numbers less than 50%, usually in 20-30 range. you’ll get the rally-around-the-flag-effect and their approval goes up, but thats rare.

Congress is hated by people. Wonder when theyre actually going to do something about that. You know be more responsive to their constituents, the people that elect them/.

No matter who the president is in the White House.

the Democratic Congress is content on sitting on their and screaming and Bush for letting the world implode. that’s flat-out stupid.

It's just politics howiestheman, that's how it works in Washington.

It is the voice of partisanism, two parties with very different views always jockeying for power. You were like what eleven or twelve when George Bush came into office in 2000? Then you have known mostly a Republican controlled congress with a Republican president in the White House. Their hold on power has enabled them to keep the Democratic party and their voice largely silent during their tenure. You’re just hearing the first marching footsteps of the Democratic party coming back to power.

i realize i'm young

but i’m not stupid. i understand politics very well, actually.

personally, i’m sick of it – i’m sick of the elite controlling everything, and i’m sick of partisanship. but mostly, i’m suck of everyone pointing fingers at everyone else instead of manning up, taking responsibility and getting things done.

take a look at the Barney Frank interview on The O’Reilly Factor (i know, that’s blasphemy to you). it’s exactly what i’m talking about. this idiot tried to deny something he just said! he is GREATLY responsible for a bunch of stuff that happened with this, and he’s trying to blame the GOP for it.

God help us if when the Dems come back to power… you think things are bad now? wait 2 years. we’ll see where we are then.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 3, 2008 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

the elite will always be in the power

thats what they do, they’re the elite.

but its not the elite that you think it is. anyone with a b.a. or b.s. or any grad/post-grad work could call tell themselves part of the elite/informed.

thats who will be in power because most other people simply dont care, or are one-issue centric, or only care around election time every 4 years. thats just the facts.

i would actually like this elite in power rather than the opposite.

by linkbruin on Oct 3, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

excuse me

the “financially elite” are always in control, and they always know what’s best for you. don’t you know that?

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 3, 2008 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's how the constitution was written

The guys that wrote it were mostly the elite (wealthy landowners) and didn’t want to lose their social status.

They just wanted to remove the class the was more elite than they (the nobility) from their political structure.

The US Senate wasn’t even elected totally by popular vote until less than a century ago. It was intended also as a check on the democratically elected House of Representatives.

Members of the Electoral College aren’t bound to vote for the candidate they were elected to vote for & the whole system is a republican method, not democratic.

The elite are in power because they usually have the wealth it takes to run a political campaign.

Thanks for the concern.

The American Dream also doesn’t include blaming others for your problems.

I’m not surprised that you find my viewpoint hateful. It’s all peace, love, and bong hits when you’re still in university surrounded by the kids who make up the student body and faculty.

It's a culture of victimization.

Nobody is responsible for his own actions. It’s always someone else’s fault.

Unless you do something good, then you can take all the credit.

amen to that, brotha

it’s sad, but it’s true.
that’s what happens when you can’t parent kids anymore… “they’re always right.. don’t hurt their feelings.. it’s not your fault!”
what a load of crap.

and we wonder why this country is in the toilet. it’s time to man-up. that’s the difference between the 40’s, let’s say, and now. people back then took responsibility and pulled themselves up. people nowadays just sit back and cry and wait for someone else to fix it.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 3, 2008 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The first half of the 40's was World War II, and the nation was in crisis.

The government largely controlled what people could and could not do during that time. Post War, brought the GI bill (a huge government program) that allowed soldiers coming home from the war to secure government backed loans at low interest rates to buy their first homes. This lead to the growth of cities and suburbs that fed consumerism and a progressive economy during the next two decades. The GI bill also gave every veteran the right to attend college that also benefited the economy. Strong unions trained people to work in trades that supported manufacturing and protected them with 40 hour work weeks, fair pay for work, healthcare, and retirement pensions. Much of this is gone now due to deregulation and union busting during the Reagan – Bush years and the Bush years again. Factories have closed and jobs shipped over seas. The GI bill is just an example, from the decade you chose, that government has played a large role though out our history when crisis and need of the people is required to keep the country strong and healthy. Barack Obama wants to return the government back to helping out the people who truly have need, as in no healthcare, job creation, and an energy policy that helps us instead of the failed conservative policies of the last seven and a half years.

i would never try to take anything away from what FDR did

easily one of the best presidents we had.

BUT created more government and more useless programs is NOT the answer. Barack Obama wants to create all kinds of new programs that will just suck up more money (as if we’re not abusing Social Security already…)

The government should help, yes, but it should not be a crutch to live on, and that’s what the real problem is.

and if you want to blame someone for where we are now, blame Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. THEY are the ones that created this mess by forcing banks to loan money to people who could not pay it back. thus, the markets fell, and now the taxpayers are screwed.

Kotch would've had that.

This back and forth is why I didn't want to join this political thread. This is a site for Angel Baseball!!!!

I am (I believe like most citizen’s of this great land) fiscally conservative and socially libertarian (well mostly libertarian).
Do you believe this will be covered in the debates? It’s not even a part of the national conversation. Does anyone realize how much debt we are piling on future generations? This is something I would like to see discussed. But its not even on the radar.

Good luck to you and others during the balance of your political discussions. Thus ends my final post on politics at HH.

If a male candidate was talking like Palin, he would e laughed off the stage.

She’s only getting away with her crap because she is a woman. She is doing a good job working the talking points into her answers. She is leaning heavily on her cheat sheet. Biden is’nt attacking enough, he is being too nice. It was great when Biden corrected her about the vice-president’s constitutional roll with regard to congress and how dangerous Cheney has been.
