Couldn't sleep last night

I could feel my blood pounding through my whole body as I lay there in the heat. I finally dozed off around 2. I woke up feeling just as angry as I did watching the end of the game.

The only positive to take from game 1 is that it was positively dismal.

HOW ABOUT

> it was only game 1
>it wasn’t a HUGE loss
>it was their wake up call to bring on their game
>it wasn’t game 4, 2-2 and they HAVE to win the next one
>it wasn’t game 5

The only thing I see, it was a waste of a great Lackey start.

by ladybug on Oct 2, 2008 7:43 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

nice

The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

by hauldog on Oct 2, 2008 10:49 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Becasue it doesn't feel that way

> it feels like the 7th straight playoff loss to Boston in the past 5 years
> It WAS a Huge loss
> I hope your right about your third point, but we have Vaddy and Hatcher on our team, guys who will do it their way no matter the consequences
> and it would feel better if it was game 4 or 5 because we would of had to win a game to get to that point. Thus giving us confidence that we could win again.

I see more than a wasted start. I see a team that is unable to beat Boston in the playoffs

Friday is do or die. Go Halos.

Im Sorry Ladybug but I HAVE to point something out to You and Rev....

I love the positive thinking, I’m that way too…….BUT

Angels record in playoff series when they lose Game 1 to Boston: 0-3

The ones that we have won were NOT AGAINST THE SUX. We need to beat their Asses to get the dam nerves out. I am staying positive like most of you but It’s scary to be down to Boston (not so much this year) in the playoffs.

Now that I got that out LETS GO ANGELS……..KICK SOME SERIOUS ASS TOMORROW!!!

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh, my bad

I thought 10 straight post season losses, and 7 in the last five years, to Boston was a reality

by UCIHalo on Oct 2, 2008 1:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yup you are 100% right

they should just give it up now. It’s over. They suck.

The reality, as much as I hate to say it, is Boston out played them. The hAlos need to man up and play baseball SMARTLY- defensively & offensively.

Oh, I understood your sarcasm and what I wrote was sarcastic, too.

I also think that when someone is venting frustration, we shouldn’t jump to accusing that person of having a quitter mentality. I find these boards very helpful in venting frustration and don’t think we should be questioning each other’s commitment to the team.

Our problem

was that there was no margin for error. If we continue to make the opposing pitchers look like they are the best in the history of the game we are in for another long off season. How about we have a playoff game where we can afford to give up a run or 2? How about we score enough runs that Lackey can afford to make a pitching mistake? Anyone remember Jarrod Washburn laughing about how far Bonds hit that homerun in 2002? Where’s that mindset? Anyone…anyone?

Captain, there are doubt's...

by Match Day 5 on Oct 2, 2008 8:08 AM PDT   0 recs

Bingo

I don’t like looking back at 2002 because

a.) I didn’t care at the time
b.) it was a long time ago
c.) the team is unrecognizable form the ’02 squad

…but at the same time, the team was good in 2002 because they knew how to score runs. It was the highest-scoring Series of all time, and we won despite having pitchers named Appier and Washburn.

Someone needs to figure out why we can’t string hits together.

by Scuff on Oct 2, 2008 8:52 AM PDT   0 recs

Isn't it funny...

ironic maybe…

Everyone here (including myself) pokes fun at the Doyers. Constantly yammering about how much they suck, how they barely made the post-season this year, how the NL West is even weaker than the AL West, how the Doyers were barely over 500 even with rent-a-Manny.

And last night, they stun a national crowd by putting a thorough beating on the highly- touted Cubbies in the hallows of Wrigley field. Attention HH shoppers, Fresh crow now on sale.

Later that night, the team with the best record in all of baseball, the team that many experts consider the “most complete team in the game,” the team with an SI Power Ranking of #1, the only team in the game with 100 wins, the team that took 8 out of 9 against the defending World champs in the regular season, the team that many predict will go “all the way…”

just laid down and died right in front of their stadium full of Rally-Monkeys.

National broadcasters were forced to talk about a West-coast ball-club last night and guess what, it wasn’t the Angles they were talking about.

Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up at the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake... the K-Rod!

by Scuff on Oct 2, 2008 9:29 AM PDT   0 recs

And speaking of the broadcasters

can someone tell those douches to just call the game and not root for either team? Christ, it was like they wanted to bronze Jon Lester right then and there! They were positively giddy whenever Boston scored a run and relentless in replaying Vlad’s minor (and completely understandable) baserunning mistake. I like my TV. I’d really appreciate it if I didn’t half to throw a lamp through it.

Captain, there are doubt's...

by Match Day 5 on Oct 2, 2008 11:11 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Completely understandable?

I beg to differ. That was a bonehead play. Vlad got a bad read and compounded the problem by trying to make up for his bad read with over-aggressiveness.

If Vlad takes off right from the crack of the bat and gets doubled off of first because Youkilis makes a ridiculously difficult catch, I don’t have a problem with that. It’s a calculated risk. OR if he plays it cautiously and stays at second, that’s fine too. We have a runner in scoring position with Kendrick up.

But that play was neither understable or minor. It killed our last chance at a legitimate rally and took the crowd completely out of the game. Other than Bay’s homerun, I would say that play was the worst play of the game.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

by Gorbachav5 on Oct 2, 2008 11:20 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You're probably right

and I might just be trying to salvage something positive for my own sanity. I saw it, though, as Vlad trying to apply some pressure. Nothing wrong with that; that’s the way this team is supposed to play. I think from his angle (and his postgame comments seem to back this up) the ball looked like it was bouncing further away from Youkilis then it actually did. Youkilis was quite fortunate to have it bounce up right back to him, almost right in throwing position, but Vlad couldn’t see that and had already decided that he might have a chance at third. Perhaps Ebel could have been a little more emphatic in trying to get Vlad to hold up but I wouldn’t characterize it is a “boneheaded” play.

I also consider it to be minor because nobody believes that baserunning gaffes on flares just behind the infield will or should determine the outcome of this series. This lineup was not built to ‘take advantage of opportunities,’ it was built to beat the crap out of opposing pitchers. Not doing that is major.

Captain, there are doubt's...

by Match Day 5 on Oct 2, 2008 12:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah there was some luck involved

In that the ball bounced right up to Youkilis, but Vlad also got thrown out by 10 feet. Either be aggressive or don’t be aggressive, but if you start out by not being aggressive, you can’t switch it halfway through the play. That was the bonehead part. I’m all for the Angels aggressive style, but Vlad wasn’t smart about that one.

The reason I said it wasn’t minor is because this is a 5-game series. We only have so much room to play with. According to fangraphs, that play had the single largest win probability factor (-.08) than any play that didn’t involve a run scoring (and was even higher than the two runs the Sox scored in the 9th). That also had a big effect on the fans, who got taken out of it on that play.

I understand your sanity issue, though. It’s really frustrating. I even defended Scioscia leaving Vlad in to run for himself, and then it backfired. Ugh.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

by Gorbachav5 on Oct 2, 2008 1:08 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Right on

Whether it was his fault or not, Vlad got caught in that dead zone where you say, ‘I gotta run hard but wait, maybe I should go back, oh no, it’s too late to stop, I gotta go…’ and at that point he was fucked. In the context of that game it was one of, if not the, most significant event but I think we agree that this lineup shouldn’t be playing games that come down to plays like that.

Either beat or get beaten. Don’t let the game be determined by whether the “breaks” go your way or not.

Captain, there are doubt's...

There's always next season, ladies :(

And thankfully, Moreno understands this…

Two weeks ago, Arte Moreno emerged from the team’s annual organizational meetings and said he wants to keep his 2009 payroll where the 2008 payroll is, about $124 million.

But Moreno amended those comments before Game 1 of the division series Wednesday night, saying he would be willing to go beyond his budget — as he did this season — for the right players.

“I can bump the payroll to anything I want to bump it,” Moreno said. “If we find a player that is going to fit in and help us get to the promised land, we’ll make adjustments.”

P.J. Jang’s

That nice was awful, but I didn't have the feeling that we were overmatched as I did the last 2 series with the Red Sux.

We were in the game, had Lester on the ropes a couple of times but failed to come through. It’s a game that very easier could have broken to our favor. That makes the loss sting a bit more, but it leaves some confidence for today. Oh, and how about Sosh takes his head out of his ass and doesn’t play GMJ tonight or again ever. The rest of the world has known for a long time now that he should not be in there.

by snowhor on Oct 2, 2008 10:01 AM PDT   0 recs

Game 2 Priorities

1. Keep Ellsbury off base – our catchers can’t throw runners out for shite and he was doing to us what Figgins is supposed to do to other teams, be a pest on the basepaths.
2. Pitch them inside, keep them uncomfortable
3. Juan Rivera starts over Matthews

4. Let’s keep the faith, the goosebumps from game 1 are gone, and as Hula Dula says, “we need playoff amnesia” and last night’s game was a mess so it just has to be forgotten.

by jtkelly86 on Oct 2, 2008 10:08 AM PDT   0 recs

I'd be careful pitching Ortiz, Fuckilis and Bay inside.

Better make sure it’s inside off the plate. If the pitches catch the plate, that’s not inside enough and those jackasses can crank it.

by snowhor on Oct 2, 2008 10:15 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Youkilis yes, the other two...

Ortiz and Bay both have holes in their swings right underneath their hands. We saw what Bay can do with a pitch out over the plate last night. Both are vulnerable to pitches at their belts on the inside corner.

Youkilis on the other hand usually turns on those pitches, so he definitely needs to be pitched carefully if you’re coming inside.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

by Gorbachav5 on Oct 2, 2008 11:26 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

everything napoli called was away last night to Bay.

By the 3rd time through, Bay was looking dead red fastball away. He got it. Game over.

I am wondering who the issue is with though. Napoli failing to mix up pitch calling/location as the game moves on, the overall game plan, or if Lackey should be shaking him off. Lackey gives up a lot homers, and it’s usually later in the game, as if the hitter knows what is coming. Sure Lackey missed his location, but only in terms of height, the pitch was on the corner. Can get away with it if you throw 98, not so much at 92

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Oct 2, 2008 11:35 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The zone was really bad

Although it was bad for both teams. And I actually thought it was worse for Lester most of the game.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

by Gorbachav5 on Oct 2, 2008 1:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Game 2 priorities

1. Have to show something different, location wise, after a few times through the order.
2. Get a leadoff hitter on base.
3. Leave the sulking in the clubhouse. After dropping 8 straight playoff games overall, the last thing they need is Figgins and Guerrero nearly crying after making an out.
4. Better in game management by Scioscia. This isn’t the time to worry about egos. I assume Willits is on this squad because of his speed, so use him if the team is down 1 run in the 8th, with a hobbled runner on 1st. If you can pinch run him for Teix with a 20 game lead in September, surely you can pinch run him for Vlad.
5. Score more runs than the other team, you did it 8 times in the regular season. Dice K will walk in runs if you let him.
6. win
7. please win
8. MATHIS!

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Oct 2, 2008 11:13 AM PDT   0 recs

Mathis?

As in, make sure Mathis doesn’t get the start? I could sort of understand that considering Napoli took one off his knee, hard, but … Mathis is a defensive nightmare. It’s like knowing Josh Paul will inevitably fail to tag A.J. Pierzynski on a dubious called third strike and yet still starting him.

Witty .sig goes here.

Other way around

The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

Unfortunately, that's correct.

Though Nappers didn’t have good night last night.

by snowhor on Oct 2, 2008 4:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

idk i think GA should move back to his original spot

we saw how it is a risk and pressure situation for howie driving in runs. If he’s batting second theres no pressure in him to drive in runs and if he gets on great the better chance for us to socre runs

by jccangels29 on Oct 2, 2008 1:28 PM PDT   0 recs

Garret's been great from that spot

I don’t think we want to mess with Garret right now. If anything, I say play Juan Rivera and bat him 6th. Let Kendrick hit 7th so there’s even less pressure. Mathis 8th, Aybar 9th.

Howie definitely looked like he was pressing, but he’ll get over it. He’s a stud.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

I said it in the postgame thread... i'll say it again...

not impressed by the red sox, they’re beatable, plain and simple. halos beat themselves last night, lester pitched himself into trouble early but was aided by bad AB’s by Howie. Had Figgy or Aybar gotten on base once or twice BETWEEN them the game is completely different. The meat of the line-up 2-5 all had multi-hit games against a good pitcher, our ace had good stuff and another good start against his bugaboo but got no run support. Walking out of the stadium after the game the feel of the crowd wasn’t “GOD this is ’04 or ’07 all over again”, it was “that one got away from us” and “we beat ourselves.” Series is FAR from over

Krod save count (62) ... Rob's blinkie cup collection (8)

by BigBangRobbDawgg on Oct 2, 2008 1:36 PM PDT   0 recs

Boston is good

They’re a really good team. I think they were the better team last night. I do think that we got a little unlucky that we didn’t string any of our hits together, but Lester was on his game. He wasn’t spectacular but he was good. And we just couldn’t generate any power (9 hits, all singles).

I think last night showed us that we’re playing a good team, but that we CAN still beat them. There’s no reason to be afraid of them. I think the main thing that’s different between our futlity against Boston and our playoff losses to other teams: we can’t score against Boston. That’s why this feels the same, even though I don’t think it is. Our offense needs to give us some hope.

If we had lost last night 9 – 6 or even 7 -4, I would have felt a lot better about things. But I do agree with you, this series is far from over.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

by Gorbachav5 on Oct 2, 2008 2:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Better team

I think not

The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

by hauldog on Oct 2, 2008 2:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I have to disagree

Their pitcher shut us down for the most part. Yeah we got some singles, but you don’t score runs when you can’t mix in an extra base hit or take a couple of walks to go along with those singles. They had timely hitting and more extra base hits.

There were really three big errors we made:
1. Matthews blunder which didn’t cost us any runs
2. Vlad’s baserunning gaffe, which may have cost us a run, but Kendrick may have grounded into a double play anyway
3. Scioscia pitching to Ortiz, which cost us a run, but we lost by 3, so it didn’t change the outcome

If we made three errors but none of them changed the outcome of the game, we lost to a better team. Does that mean we won’t be the better team with Santana vs Dice-K? No. I think we will be. But the Red Sox outplayed us last night and the Angels have to play better. Simple as that.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

Two IM quotes from my brother (a Dodgers fan...)
What’s the point of having the best closer in the game, if you don’t have an offense to get him into the close situation? Is Frankie gonna spend the whole ALDS in the bullpen twiddling his thumbs?
IMHO, Ervin Santana is the best pitcher on the Angles roster. Dude is sick. No emotion on the mound. Just mows guys down and then looks as if he’s about to yawn.

Hopefully, his comment on Voodoo holds true…
