Glaus and D-Mac
What do u guys think about bringing back Glaus even if we sign or don't sign Tex, if he's on the Trade market? Cards need a middle IF, we definitely have plenty of those. Aybar and Pitcher(Mosely type) for Glaus. 1 yr left on his contract. Not too big of a risk. it would help the cards with freeing up more money for them to get FA and help us get a est. power hitter at 1 of the corner IF spots. Have any of you guys seen D-Mac's stats down in AAA. if he gets his shot next season with the Marlins, if will be interesting what he can do when he's healthy. his power potential is amazing.

No Way
…the organization has long since burned its bridge to Mister Glaus.
D-Mac would be too much of them admitting a mistake and I have noticed that the NAgels just do not do that sort of thing…
I agree. The team would never do it.
He’s a high OBP/SLG guy, but all this team sees is a weak batting average. Stonedman didn’t even offer arbitration to Glaus, which would have at least given us draft pick compensation when he signed his 4-year deal elsewhere. That shows how stupid and out of touch with the market Stonedman was, as well as the organization’s complete inability to identify a quality hitter. We’ll see if they understand how to judge a hitter by how hard we go after Tex.
As for D-Mac, yes, he couldn’t be counted on to be healthy, but why would the team hang on to him while he was rehabbing only to release him when his health was back? Even if there were questions on whether his health would hold up, it would have been worth the risk to keep him on the 40-man roster.
disagree
Scoiscia and others see the value fo SLG% and OBP%. Your take on Stoneman could not be more wrong.
The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.
That may be, but their understanding of the value of OBP/SLG has not been translated playing time in the lineup.
Case in point, Naps practically being Mathis’ backup for much of the season despite evidence of his superiority based on 2007 stats, let alone 2008 performance. Also, see GA, Izturis and Aybar in the top of the lineup, Darin Erstad’s time with the team post 2002, the signing and consistent playing time given to GMJ (even after he was supposedly demoted).
time heals
i understand the arbitration thing, i don’t even know if Glaus was rated because he was hurt soo much in 03-04. his health was a ? going into FA. i don’t know, that was a tough call. He only has 1 year left on his current deal. he hasn’t been hurt over those last 4 yrs with anything major. it might be a risk worth taking looking over potential 1B or 3B FA out there.
Thats what i was thinking when they let D-Mac go. your patient enough to have him get healthy, then let him walk away without giving him 1 last shot. He put up crazy numbers down in 3A. when he gets his chance its going to be fun to see if he can live up to his past hype.
If the NYY offer Tex 8/200, and the Angels decide not to match or exceed that number, does that mean the Angels don’t want to win?
Re: Tex comments
No, that’s why I wrote how hard we go after Tex, not if we re-sign him. There’s a value that he brings to the club and it may turn out that someone offers him more than that. I’m fine with being outbid for him and letting someone else overpay, but only if we do make a serious attempt to keep him.
Yeah. Lay off Stoneman.
He did more good than bad for the team. My opinion is it was Arte’s disdain for cheating, steroid users that prompted Glaus’s dismissal. He wants to run a tight ship. He was about to ditch Matthews too, but the legal ramifications were unclear, so he had to keep GMHGH to avoid bigger problems.

Steriods
was Glaus accused of taking steroids?
He was in the Mitchell report
From Wikipedia: “In a September 2007 article, Sports Illustrated reported that Glaus received shipments of nandrolone and testosterone from Signature Pharmacy from 2003 to 2004. According to the article, Glaus had received a prescription for these materials from a California anti-aging clinic. One of Glaus’ prescribing doctors, Ramon Scruggs, had his medical license suspended for making illegal prescriptions. Glaus met with the Commissioner’s Office regarding this situation, and Commissioner Bud Selig did not impose any discipline.”

glaus
i’m no expert on steriods. but i think those were the years he was hurt. its no excuse taking banned substances but i’m assuming he took those to try to heal faster. help his body recover from his injuries that plagued him those 2 yrs. no excuses if its true.
Wikipedia? I'd rather quote from "The Onion."
You ever feel as if your mind had started to erode?
Glaus
Him leaving may have had something to do with the injury plagued seasons leading up to free agency, and his ridiculously high salary demands. Just a hunch.
The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.
Yeah, I understand that. But to not offer him arbitration?
What’s the worst that could have happened? Accepting it and being around for another year?
Eating up payroll and not playing
He did not have surgery on his shoulder.
The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.
Yeah, but there's risk to signing anyone.
Yes, he had a poor track record from the previous two years, but don’t you take a shot offering arbitration to our World Series MVP? He did go on to play 149 games that year with an .885 OPS. Hindsight 20/20 and all, but isn’t the potential of that kind of production worth the risk?
Glaus
did the Angels and Glaus have a bad ending? i thought the Angels decided just to move on and Glaus got a good deal with the D-Backs.
I thought so
Though it was never said. D-Mac was a Texas League All-Star, though, and looked to be tons cheaper, and younger, too. Didn’t work out.
Witty .sig goes here.
D-Mac WOULD be a mistake
The guy would strike out 250 times given a full season of PA at the major league level. He’s the classic AAAA player – good pop in the minor leagues, can’t hit a good breaking ball, sub-par defense.
The Marlins infield was decent last year, but still, if you can’t get a shot with that team, I’m not sure how he would fit in with the Angels.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
D-Mac mistake
i didn’t mean the Angels get him back. but if he was still an Angel if would be fun to see if he could have lived up to his potential finally being healthy. yeah he SO to much but he is a power hitter. your not looking for him to be a contact type hitter. not everyone is going to hit for avg and power. cuts down and learns to be more selective he can be productive power guy. even if he strikes out 150x a season. if he hits 30-40HR it might be worth it on the right team.
weak hitters
its true with that. we have too many singles hitters on the team that we rely on. we need that good mix of power and hitting. 2002 team had good power and hitting. the mix was perfect.
The point is
That D-Mac has not been good, period, at the ML level. He hasn’t shown the ability to hit 30 – 40 HR’s at that level. If you can’t hit a breaking ball, it doesn’t matter how hard you hit the ball. He doesn’t get on base, either.
Sorry, guys who OBP under .300 aren’t good no matter what kind of outs they’re making.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Yeah, I don't know if he'll ever be the superstar he was supposed to be.
I just thought it was dumb to rehab him and then dump him. Why not take the risk keeping him on the 40-man roster when his health appeared to be back?
That's true
It does seem like this is an Angels MO – get rid of guys too soon. Which makes you wonder if it was Stoneman’s fault for letting these guys go or if it’s a developmental flaw in the system that becomes apparent when these guys join new teams and fall under new tutelage.
Think about it, Mike Napoli may be the first power hitter developed in the Angels system (I’d like to see what he can do over a full season before I call it bonified) since Troy Glaus (who was pretty developed out of college) to actually display power with the Angels. And Troy Glaus is the only one since Salmon and Anderson.
The Angels have a pretty piss-poor record of developing power.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Angels Mo
i dont’ think so. i don’t really know of any Angels over the past 8 yrs that they gave up on too early. i know Jenks is always mentioned but he always got in trouble. he was immature while with the Angels. Its awesome that he’s developed his talents. too bad its not with the Angels. sometimes some players need a fresh start to realize their talents. with D-Mac i understand because he seemed hurt all the time when he got his chance but its just that they waited till he was fully healed and then they let him go.
No, I'm definitely not referring to Jenks
And maybe I’m just thinking of older names (Edmonds, Bichette, Snow). You’re right, there’s not many recently. Maybe Kotchman (although I think that was a good trade, but it will still hurt to see him turn into a star). Kevin Gregg. JC Romero. Maybe D-Mac if he does turn into something good (although I don’t see it yet).
It just seems like more I guess.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Was it ever established
that he could not hit a breaking ball?
That’s one I never heard before.
WRONG!
D-Mac’s lifetime numbers vesus MLB righties:
.263/.318/.498
I would take that from a 3B, plus that is lefthanded power, exactly what the Angels are short on.
Really?
.318 OBP = A LOT of outs. I mean a ton. That’s definitely a below average hitter, especially at 3B.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
kotchman
whats the big deal about kotchman? he has a great glove. above avg hitter, below avg power for a corner IF. especially when we have Figgins @3B. We have to get over him. he’s not a franchise player. don’t get me wrong i liked him but he’s not one of those guys that can’t be replaced.

If you can't hit a breaking ball pitch at the ML level
That’s all your gonna get to hit, pitchers aren’t dumb. Despite all the over-inflated, injury plagued potential, D-Mac was a bust.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
hindsight is 20/20
i was just looking at Glaus’ stats from the past four seasons since leaving the angels, we really could’ve used that bat. Too bad we only had a potential all star that was made of glass.
We got burnt on both ends of that candle. And fyi, D-Mac prob didn’t get a shot on the marlins because he was blocked by their very powerful infield offense, and took their chance with cantu at third instead of using d-mac.
D-Mac
2008, D-Mac needed to prove that he was healthy so it was good that he was in at 3A. Marlins are going to trade 1-2 IF and that will make room for D-Mac. i hope it does because the Angels confidently let Glaus go because of D-Mac. To bad his health didn’t hold up. just curious if healthy if he was worth that hype. what a perfect place to play. no pressure with the Marlins.
We've got our Glaus in Napoli now.
Naps can hit .250 with 30 HR if he plays a whole season. Scioscia would have to be insane to keep platooning the catchers after this season.
Shine on, luminous panthers!
I'll just take this moment to say publically..
I love Mike Napoli.
He is my newest inexplicable man-crush. Pair him up with songbirds Duncan Sheik, Ben Folds and a little Gyorgi Ligeti and I’m in heaven…

i don’t think he’s good enough defensively. i think Catchers is definitely one position were defense has to come first. handling pitchers, directing a game, throwing out runners. i believe Mathis has those skills, of course he has to hit better to be a starter.
At some point
You have to look at the offense-defense catcher argument and throw it out the window. Mathis’ supposedly superior defense ( and I defended him most of the year) was most certainly NOT on display this year. Couple that with hitting BELOW .200 and it is in no way helping the team. Not only did Naps hit .273, he also had an OPS of .950, but he also had a fielding percentage of .994, Mathis’ was .981.
Naps should catch 130 to 140 games next year, without a shadow of doubt.

mathis and fielding percentage
most of Mathis’ errors were throwing. yeah i know thats part of catching, but when he corrects his mechanics he’s going to be lights out defensively. he’s good at handling pitchers. anyways i like them both. i just think Naps isn’t as good handling the whole staff. obviously if Mathis doesn’t start making good contact then it doesn’t matter. we need some production from the C positon. either at C or DH i want to see what Naps can do with 500PA
Other than a couple of stretches
early last season, Mathis didn’t strike me as a very good defensive catcher.
Regardless, he’s not a good enough defensive catcher to displace an offensive FORCE like Napoli.
Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

Mathis will surprise in 2009
He’ll have that bullet arm prepared to throw out runners ,and hopefully he would’ve already(hopefully) learned some better batting techniques

D-Mac Kicks ass.......I cant wait to see him in the Bigs
Probably go check him out at Doyers Stadium if he stays with the Fish and earns a Starting spot.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i hope
to hear about D-Mac for such a long time as an Angel fan. We let Glaus go for him. i just want to see him healthy, what he can do with 500PA. i remember seeing his violent swing. just imagining with his size/power what can do with a baseball if he made solid contact. i hope he’s successful. only because he looks like he’s worked hard to get into the game.
500 PA's
He’ll hit .260, OBP .310, strike out 175 times and hit 25 HR’s with mediocre defense at best. That is not a guy who should ever get that many AB’s. I’m not sure if that’s the Angels fault for developing him poorly or if he was just overhyped. The Marlins have nothing to lose, so if he’s healthy, they might as well take a shot, right? He could be better than that. But based on what he’s shown, that line looks more likely.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
D-Mac
he’s never been given the oppurtunity to prove what he can do over a long period of time. his whole time he was with the Angels he always had that back problem. you can’t just use the minimum amount of numbers to project what he can do at this level. JMHO. you can say that about almost all the prospects that are brought up.
