It's weird....
..because you knew this day would come, and you can kind of understand (but not exactly) that this is what “had to be done”.
But I’m not so happy after hearing this news. Maybe I’m just not as nonplussed as I thought I might have been. I think I may have been guilty of thinking like an owner, instead of a fan.
I said he should have been bought out, but you know what, I miss him already.

take the pay cut garret
come off the bench for us. i cant even begin to imagine this guy in another uniform.
Let me start this rant by saying
I am a GA supporter, life long Angel fan, I know through the seasons we have had fun at GA’s expense. He’s lazy. He Cadillacs, he makes the average play in LF seem effortless. The best always do. But, lest we forget, GA is a record holder in almost all offensive records. GA is the closest thing we have to a career Halo, not named Salmon or Downing or Grich. Therefore the Halo will always burn bright where GA is concerned.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
You do know that
Grich spent 40% of his career as a Baltimore Oriole, right? And Downing spent 35% of his career as a White Sox or a Ranger? Career Halos? Not so much.
And I am fairly certain that Rev’s detailed list of offensive accomplishments that constitute this post pretty much serve as a reminder of GA’s record holdings “in almost all offensive records”. Pretty hard to enter this thread forgetting that already.
Francisco Rodriguez: 2006 to Present: 149 saves. 5 Panthers. As fabulous as Pride, Romero, Gregg, Budde and Dino Ebel combined.
Yeah old school I get that
It’s just after all these formative years of mine(I’m only 34) I got a soft spot for GA. So sue me my stirruped brother. And despite the fact that Grich was an Oriole, and Downing a Chisux and Ranger, I still prefer to think of them both as Halos.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
P.S. I don't mean to sound like a jack-ass
I got much respect for you Stirrups.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
I do not know about you guys
but I think he is probably the greatest angel numbers wise and probably third overall behind The Kingfish and Downing. This is just my opinion and I honestly believe this. I hope they do resign him because seeing him another uniform will suck. You do not realize what you’ve got until you lose it. and he doesn’t have what he use to, but I still think he is a great teammate for all the young guys.
"Throw some CHED!"
what a shame
He’s still got value, and with his history with this club, so many “fans” are ready to see him walk.
I used to think he was lazy and unclutch, back in the 90’s, but I only came to realize how great a player he is after hearing so many players, coaches and managers talk about how natural his abilities are, which makes it look like he isn’t trying.
He’s been one of the most unselfish players on this team, I just wish more fans would embrace him.

Restructure Contract then Resign
That’s what will happen.
Probably a contract full of incentives to fill the gap of the pay cut.
Hope so...
it’s a good idea you have, at least.

He deserves it and even more…we deserve it.

I Hope We Re-Sign Him
He was one of the Angels’ best producers in the second half. I know his sabermetrics don’t come through as fantastic, but he’s Mr. Angel and should be brought back for a three-year contract or so. I think he’s still got a good 400 ABs in him every season minimum, and he’s proven that with everyday play he simply gets better as the season progresses. He’s got an actual chance at the HoF, and having him play for the same club his whole career is the right way to handle him.
I understood when they parted with Percy, Washburn, Eckstein, etc., but GA is worth keeping around.

I <3 GA
I’ll never understand the dislike that some Angel fans have for this guy. I know Salmon is everyone’s golden boy, but to me Garret is clearly the greatest Angel of all-time. His offensive production and longevity for this team has been remarkable.

Not even close.
Wake me up when he could get on base at a .350 clip. Ugh! Can’t wait to see him go – maybe he can reunite with Ersty in Houston and they can grow old and worse together.

One of the best. Resigning at a reduced rate, is the anwer. Can be an awesome DH or fourth outfielder. Consistancy: He has it.

Look
GA was a great player for us. Plain and simple… the numbers speak for themselves. He’s done so much for the club, and he definitely deserves a special place in Halos History.
But I am incredibly glad that some of you guys are not the GM. We should resign him because “it would suck to see him in another uniform”?! Are you kidding me?
Like I said a few weeks ago… in the offseason, baseball has to be viewed and treated as a business, because that’s exactly what it is. If you have an older player (because GA is old in baseball terms) performing at league average or worse at his position (overall), then you need to let him go, and get somebody else in there.
Kotch would've had that.
GA
i agree. this is a business. if we were the pathetic Royals then yeah resign him i guess, but were trying to win a championship. if we think we have younger prospects that can produce then we need to give them a chance. or if we sign a better hitter.
We tried that.
We gave some of our prospects a chance and we signed better hitters. What did that get us? Bounced to the curb by the Red Sox again.
Captain, there are doubt's...
yes it is still a business
but a business that still needs its fans. if you go away and trade the more or less sentimental favorites (im not talking about a guy like willits, ga actually does produce), then you burn bridges with all your fans. then you resemble the oakland a’s with an average turnout of about 7000 per game and roster turnover resembling a mcdonalds. i like winning, but i still like the guys on the team. the two arent mutually exclusive.
not all fans look at players and just see numbers and neither do gms. theyre still players. a guy like ga coming off the bench is not a bad thing. he’d start elsewhere, why not keep him around if hes willing to stay at a reduced price and reduced role?

Business
i like GA, but he has to be last option. at least as a starter. using the A’s is going to the extreme. are you telling me if the Angels don’t sign GA back for another year then the Angels are starting to look like the A’s. the difference is the A’s trade their talent because they don’t want to pay them. the Angels are trying to improve their team. sentimental favorites or not, as long as the Angels produce on the field then fans are going to come. good team is a good team. if you can get a player to improve over GA or even a prospect from the system they think can improve the team, sometimes you have to take the chance. you just can’t hold on. lets just say we re-sign him for whatever he ends up signing for including the Buyout. if he doesn’t produce then what? then your stuck with 2 OF who can’t hit.
the day Angels become the A's is the day I start hating baseball
I dont want to be the A’s. Its just a moneyball, numbers only tactics. They’re still players
league average stats?
First and foremost, I don’t agree that GA’s stats across the board for the past few seasons have been league average. If all you care about is OPS, then there may be an argument, but OPS alone isn’t everything. Secondly, stats don’t define the player, their just numbers to use to justify your position. And with the many combinations and variations, I think that it’s too fudgey to use them here.
Based upon performance we’ve seen in 2007 and 2008 from GMJ, Reggie and GA, in 2009, GA is a better option at a discounted rate. Is he a better option than JR? remains to be seen, if JR can get the same number of at bats… if he can stay healthy.
Right there, I think he is worth a discounted rate to have him starting LF/DH. We don’t need to cut a $5-$6MM salary (what I think GA could get on the FA market) to make room for Tex, there is room.
Q: What's the difference between A-Rod and Madonna? A: Madonna had a couple hits last October...
ok, then
if its going to be a discussion of stats, let’s at least keep it relative to who will likely take the job if we don’t re-sign GA. For shits and giggles, let’s throw Chone in there, since there have been whispers that he could be moved to the OF if we dont sign Tex (and subsequently pick up Konerko).
GA 758
JR 720
GMJ 676
CF 685
RW 552
So, JR is close on OPS. Great, as I mentioned above, you can take the risk that JR will blossom given daily ABs, and hope he doesn’t get hurt. I don’t think JRs had a full season without a DL stint. Or you can go with the tried and proven resource, for effectively the same cost. When it’s that close and GA still has the better numbers, what’s the rush to send him packing?
Q: What's the difference between A-Rod and Madonna? A: Madonna had a couple hits last October...
outfielders
why is the equation always GA or JR? lets just say Tex doesn’t sign, that means the Angels will have alot of money to spend. through FA or trades there are better answers. i like GA but he’s 36, even if we don’t sign or trade for another OF, when do we give our young guys chance? if they have proven everything at every minor league level, keeping them down there is bad for a players progress. now if GA is willing to agree to a reduce role then thats different. as alot of you guys have mentioned already, he did put up good numbers. i’m pretty sure he can find a starting spot somewhere with those numbers at a certain price. so do u think he’s willing to be a 4th OF?
I understand the significance of stats like OPS
but it’s comments like this that realy piss me off. The guy merely made the point that OPS isn’t everything. And it’s true – it’s not. For one thing, it severaly underweights OBP (which won’t help GA, I know), but it also doesn’t consider defense, baserunning, etc. And he never mentioned anything about grits or guts or whatever. You made that up to make yourself feel better.
There is ample criticism to be levied on mainstream media members who rate guys like Juan Pierre as being studs and guys like Adam Dunn as being losers using the concepts you mention. But that didn’t happen here (and I’d like to point out that while guys like Darin Erstad are overrated based on their actual production, it’s hard not to appreciate him going all out to run over catchers and dive for balls in the outfield – baseball is still, contrary to popular belief, entertainment).
You seem to be a bright guy Snowhor, so don’t blow it by making dumb, inflammatory comments that have zero relevance to post in question.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
You're right. I apologize.
And on a side note Gorby, you’ve warmed me to the idea of GA returning. I’d still take a shot with JR over GA, but it’s not as cut and dry as I had been making it out to be.
GA Salary
so when you say 5-6M including the Buyout? without the buyout?
with the buyout
The buyout shouldn’t count towards his salary, it is the club’s self-imposed option. At this point, GA is a free agent. if he signs elsewhere, they are going to pay him the competitive rate, not the rate minus the Angels option buyout.
As far as 5-6mm, I could be totally off, but it sounds about right to me for a Type B FA with his age and experience. There are only 2 other Type B OFs currently on the FA market this winter, and they are both at least 5 yrs older than GA.
Moises Alou (42) – 2008: 7.5mm
Luis Gonzalez (41) – 2007: 7.35mm, 2008: 2mm
I think GA’s at the front of the line in his FA category. I think he could probably get 6mm+ from another team, but I think he would take less to stay in Anaheim, and I think this season he warmed to DH and would give it a shot, or platoon LF with GMJ.

Panther!
I would rather have GA back then sign Manny to a bloated deal.
Plus, GMJ will not be 100% until who knows when. (The Angels will give him one last chance to show he has some worth in 2009, whether we like it or not.)
If GA signed a one year deal for about 4M, was told he would get about 300 to 400 PA, and would never see another lefty for the rest of his Angel life, then I’d like him back.
GA is a great Angel
But that fits him perfectly, doesn’t it? He played second fiddle to Salmon while the Kingfish was here and he’s played second fiddle to Vladdy since Salmon retired. And I think GA is just fine with that. He has been decent to very good for the last 14 years, and that’s not easy to do.
I still think he has something left in the tank. There are better ways to improve our offense and still retain an Angel institution in the outfield. Please re-sign him Reagins. I’d love to see GA back in an Angels uniform next season.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Hope he resigns
Laid-back and not flashy, I guess many of us tend to forget how clutch hes been. And his numbers last year were more than solid for as guy who is what…36? I hope he resigns and stays with us. I think hes got two more good years in him at least though and wouldnt be surprised if he got offered a decent contract from some other team offering him a starting role…

GA aint no fool
I dont think were getting him back. GA performed well last year and I am almost positive that if given the option to ride our pine or play everyday for another team that he will choose the latter. Which I would respect.
Although, he might be able to still play for us everyday. As it stands right now though, it looks like were trying to figure out a way to move on from him. I agree that we should try and get him back but with our focus on Tex and an overflowing outfield, I dont see GA as a Halo next year.

GA is on the Angels Mt Rushmore
We don’t have Mays, Ruth and Williams. We have Grich, Salmon, GA and Lackey. We should embrace this as much as possible. I understand that the game is very different now but there still has to be room for some sentimentality (and when I say that I don’t mean that GA is washed up, I still think he’s as good a RF option as any.) If Arte really wants this team to become an established SoCal brand he should perhaps make sure his front office understands that the fans care about things other than winning.

GA for one more year
Give it a go and make it one memorable year for not only himself, but the Halo faithful as well! If not, then fluck this organization and the horse it rode in on (pun intended)!
Gimme a cigarette
Look at it this way...
The World Champion Phils had a 45-year old starter who delivered when needed. How bad can it be?
Resign him
2 year $14-$15M
He is absolutely worth $7m per year, I believe he wants to keep his family here and stay with the Halos. Why would he want to go anywhere else?
That depressed feeling in my stomach is the end of the 2008 Halos season!!!!
