Mark Teixeira FILES FOR FREE AGENCY

Just in, Tex, Garland, AND Anderson filed for Free Agency and are going to EXPLORE the free agent Market.

So to all you Teixeira LOVERS, he just pissed on you okay that was a little harsh, by not even giving the Angels a chance to sign him, he wants to hear from other teams and as most expected he will probably end up with the Yankees since he Obviously wants THE MOST MONEY POSSIBLE. I like Tex dont get me wrong but I have a feeling he is gone and I have been waiting since 05 to watch Morales Play FULL TIME.

Extra Extra READ ALL ABOUT IT

Oh ya...My Boy Kendry Morales made his debut today for Los Gigantes and already has a 2 run SHOT that left the park. Also tonight Sean Rodriguez SMASHED his DWL leading 6th HR. NO NO NO NO NO, DIGAN LE QUE NO A ESA PELOTA!!!!

he already said that he would file for free agency

there’s no surprise there, and he certainly didn’t “piss on” anybody.

now the games begin…

Kotch would've had that.

Of course he filed

The Angels still have an exclusive negotiating window, not that it means much because Bora$ does not allow his clients to sign before testing the waters.

Well doesnt that just cut the Angels off from Negotiating with them since he filed?

I would think he would wait to here the Angels offer before filing for free agency.

No. There's no reason for him not to file.

It means nothing other than sending the signal for everyone to start the bidding. We have exactly the same chance of re-signing him as we did before he filed.

by snowhor on Oct 31, 2008 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Ya, so whats the point of the 14 day window were we can only talk to him?

He is blowing us off, by telling us that we CANT sign him in these 14 days because he wants to here from enverone.

Well we knew he would file for free agency when we traded for him

This is not a slap in the face.

We still have the 15 days

to negotiate with him. Nobody else can talk to him or Boras until then.

I know we had 14 days to try and sign him, but I translated this as........

“Im not going to listen to the Angels offer, I want to here EVERYONE.” Meaning that he does not care what team he plays for, I he did want to play for the Angels, would he have not filed for Free Agency?

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by acuda27 on Oct 31, 2008 12:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Why would he not file?

Even if he really, really wanted to play for the Angels, the guy owes it to himself to see what he’s really worth on the open market right now… Given that he’s a Bora$ client I don’t expect him to sign with us during the exclusive windows, maybe 1-2 weeks after that with one of the larger teams

by Neo8234 on Oct 31, 2008 12:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Now we get a chance to see if the roll of the dice was worth it

I’m optimistic if not hopeful that we’ll at least get a shot at re-singing Tex. Of course, if we can’t, or he wants A-Rod type money to stay, I say no. The only problem with that scenario is the fact that we gave up Kotch for nothing, other than draft picks. But with a agent like Boras, who knows what will happen. Acuda may very well get his wish, with Kendry at first next season. Lets hope he can step in and produce, and he isn’t a victim of his own hype.

Dude.......He was already called up, and he was way better than Brandon Wood was.

You should say, I hope he is able to play at a high level playing EVERY DAY in the Bigs, because that has not been tested yet, cuz Scioscia has not given him the chance. Look at his BA in every minor league level, He has hit around .340, i’m sure it aint a fluke.

Now the HRs, Im still not sure how many he will hit in a year, he has not been too consistant on the HR numbers but his SLG is always high.

by acuda27 on Oct 31, 2008 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually...

Danny Goodwin is the perfect analogy. He succeeded in the minors and succeeded upon his call up to the bigs. What he failed to do was make the necessary adjustments over the longer term.

Other than the fact that “K-MO” defected from Cuba, Goodwin is likley the most apt comparison an Angel fan could come up with.

None of this is to say that “K-MO” isn’t an incredible talent (he is) or that he won’t succeed in the bigs (he might).

What’s really being written here, in a variety of posts, is that longtime Angel fans have seen surefire prospects come and go over the years, enough to KNOW that there are no guarantees.

No disrespect intended, but only those that have watched baseball for only a few seasons would get carried away with the future of prospects that, in all STATISTICAL probablility will fail at the Major League level (the overwhelming majority of prospects do fail, by the way).

Kendry Morales might be the next coming of Mark Teixeira, I’m not saying that he can’t be good. What I’m saying is that an eagerness to see Morales over Teixeria is a strange combination of wishful thinking, youthful naievete, and a general lack of baseball experience. The odds are completely against “K-MO” becoming a hitter even close to as productive as Mark Teixeira.

Morales is a great young prospect but thinking that he can easily replace Teixiera is, well, idealistic at the least.

Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

was that a joke?

seriously, that was a joke, right? kendry morales is AVERAGE in every single way. He has the potential to hit .300 with a .320 OBP and his glove is not golden. If he was anywhere in the same ballpark as longoria or braun, he would have forced his way in to the lineup and every team in the league would be trying to trade for him. Neither one has even come close to happening

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 1, 2008 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Im sure no other team would have taken him out of the lineup when he was hitting .294

They would have put him a DH once Kotch was healthy again. And I’m sure no other team would have signed katrina hillenbrand to play first over Kendry Morales.

How about also looking at the .333 OBP and .479 SLG from 2007? Decent production but no where near in the same league as Tex.

Tex first shot at bigs .259AVG .480SLG
Kendry shot at bigs .294AVG .479SLG

Obviously Morales is a MUCH BETTER PLAYER. Look at the Average and they are the same in the SLG department. Tex who?

Minor Leagues
TEX .313Avg 19HRs .583SLG
K-MO .337Avg 85HRs .546SLG

Sigh, Acuda...

…honest question:

Do you honestly believe that Kendry is going to be a better player than Teixeira over at least the next 7 years (thinking that will be contract length)? Or, for that matter, even close enough to make up for the difference in salary?

I actually do think Kendry will easily be a productive major leaguer. But fact of the matter is, Angels are better, offensively AND defensively (Kendry is adequate at 1st, but no gold glover), for the next 7 years with Teixeira at 1st.

Screw Boston. Go Rays!

P.S.

One point I do agree with you on is Sean Rodriguez. I think he’s a massive sleeper for 2009 and if not, then 2010. Apart from a poor 2007 showing, that kid has a ton of potential, and looks even at the major league level to have a flashy glove.

Screw Boston. Go Rays!

Kendry can play a corner OF spot too

So even if we sign Teix, Morales will have a place to play

I feel the need, the need...for speed!

by Gorbachav5 on Oct 31, 2008 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

This is actually my preference

Let Vlad’s knees prove early in ‘09 whether surgery will give him another 2-3 years of RF or if it’s DH time. If he can play RF, then I have no problem with Kendry at near full-time DH.

Screw Boston. Go Rays!

by 101halo on Oct 31, 2008 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

my preferece as well

Teixeira is obviously the preferred first baseman. But if we can get K-Mo 500 ABs between DH/RF, I say do it in a heartbeat. He’s easily a number 6-7 hitter, with potential of moving higher, depending on your lineup. Ideally, I’d like to see this:

Figgins LF
Kendrick 2B
Teixeira 1B
Guerrero RF/DH
Napoli C
Hunter CF
Morales DH/RF
Wood 3B
Izturis/Aybar SS

that gives you 5, potentially 6 guys with some serious thunder in the heart of your order, balanced out with speed at the top and bottom. you have 6 guys that will probably hit 25 HRs (Tex, Vlad, Naps, Torii, KMo, Wood), 3 or 4 that will hit 30+ (Tex, Vlad, Naps, Wood?), and 3 or 4 guys that will steal 20+ bags.

add in some good pitching, and you’ve got yourself a World Series contender.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 31, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I would like to see S-Rod in there. I have a feeling both will have VERY similar #s

I think S-Rod would hit around .279 and Wood around .256, both with about 20-30HRs

by acuda27 on Oct 31, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

i go back and forth on S-Rod

i think i’d like to have in in AAA for at least another 1/2 of a season, then see what happens.

i’ve said before that he and Alfonso Soriano had eerily similar minor league numbers, and eerily similar body types. they could end up being similar players… but SRod still needs some work. If Figgy leaves next year, he could be the new LF

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Oct 31, 2008 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously that is what I would rather have.

BUT lets be honest with ourselves, if Tex Stays there is NO WAY scioscia plays Morales over GMJ. We all know that Scioscia is in love with both GMJ and WILLITS. So the only way to see Morales play FULL TIME is without TEX. That and I am 80% sure he’s not comin back. And I agree on Sean Rodriguez, He is going to flurish in the next year or two, I have been saying that he can be Better than Wood in the Bigs. I guess well have to wait and see how it all pans out, I hope we get to see both Wood and S-Rod compete for the best Rookie on the Angels in 09.

by PieceOfAase on Oct 31, 2008 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

Tex isn't worth it.

i guess i’m in the tiny minority on this. i know he puts up those great stats. he’s never won the MVP, he’s never led his team to the playoffs. he was traded to the Braves last year to help make that drive to the playoffs and they missed it. he got traded here because like everyone else i thought we were 1 bat away this year and we still fell short. of course i’m not saying its his fault but isn’t that why you pay big money to certain players. isn’t that why Manny is going to get what he’s going to get. he proved how valuable he is. dodgers traded for him and got what they expected. he made them better and turned them into a playoff team.

i honestly think youre more likely to see this team trade for prince fielder if teix is gone. Morales at 26 would be below league average both offensively and defensively at a major position. If wood is playing next year too, with the other non-walkers of aybar, howie, torii……our lineup would be a total disaster filled top to bottom with free swingers who dont get on base

by acuda27 on Nov 1, 2008 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

If our other hitter followed Tex's lead, we would have just completed a sweep of the Phillies.

Tex (and Vlad) were outstanding in the playoffs. The reason they didn’t do much as far as extra base hits has more to do with how the Red Sox were pitching against them. They didn’t go up there trying to hit homeruns on every pitch. Other players did, and that resulted in outs.

The thing that can make selective hitters such great power hitters is that they go after the pitch that they want to crush. If these pitches don’t come, they adjust and take the walk or maybe hit a nice line drive or grounder up the middle for a single.

Those who don’t take this approach experience more failure. See HK’s at-bats in the playoffs or the many at-bats of GMJ throughout the year where he overswings on a low and away pitch, resulting in a semi-sharp grounder to 2B or SS.

by snowhor on Oct 31, 2008 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Or if Scioscia would have played Kendry in RF, but ya I agree

Kendry had more hits than all our RF combined in the playoffs and had 2 of the biggest hits in the playoffs besides Hunters RBIs in game 4, and Naps HRs. And Morales was one of two players on the team that has a HIT against Pimplebon, but i guess thats not something to be proud of since Scioscia thinks Pimplebon sucks, there for Kendry sucks because he can hit crappy pitchers.

Tex

did you see where the Braves were before they landed Tex last yr. they were in 2nd to the Mets. for the NLE which ended being a weak div last yr. Mets tanked in ‘07. the Phillies i think came out of nowhere to take that playoff spot in ’07. not the Braves who were expected to make the playoffs after the trade. just like the dodgers got that kick when they landed Manny this yr. so don’t tell me that because the Braves sucked they didn’t make it. Tex is overrated for what everyone thinks he can do. with the Angels he didn’t really improve the W/L record for the Angels. they pretty much stayed on pace. only diff this yr with the Angels and last yr with the Braves is that the Angels were already pretty much in the playoffs. Tex was that 1 bat to take them past the Redsox, but of course we all saw that didn’t happen. so how can all you pro-Tex fans think he’s worth the money. is A-Rod worth the money?

by HALO_86 on Nov 1, 2008 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions

so who is worth the money?

youre logic is beyond me. Obviously no ONE player in baseball is responsible for an entire team’s success. Are you really pegging the Rangers and Braves being terrible on mark teixeira? And not on awful bullpens, pitching and in the braves’ case, a weak supporting cast? Teams that expect 1 player to save them have no chance. Teams like the angels that need 1 missing piece cannot be compared to the texas rangers.

Teixeira doesnt guarantee anything but youre out of your mind if you dont think he helps and makes our chances better. Youre basically saying this team shouldnt value 35 home runs/.400 OBP every year because his other teams were terrible. We have money to spend, we’re not going to have an 85 million dollar payroll next year.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 1, 2008 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

also,

youre ignoring the fact that if Vlad continues to slip, this team has nothing. Teixeira essentially becomes this team’s Vlad for the next 5-6 years. Our division is getting stronger and if you think we should rest our hopes on kendry morales, howie kendrick and brandon wood to carry us offensively, youre saying your ok with being an 80 win team because mark teixeira’s 35 home runs, 115 RBIs and .400 OBP just arent valuable because of his ex-teams and one series where even though he dominated and was easily our best player, its apparently his fault our pitching sucked and our supporting players(the ones youre OK with carrying the load going forward) sucked even more

worth the money

we all saw what Manny did when he’s on his best behavior. he helped lead a 2nd place team that was pretty much dead into the playoffs. revitalized a team in the last 2 months. i don’t want Manny but if a players worth it, Manny is. Tex isn’t. he couldn’t help the Braves in a weak div in ‘07 overcome. Angels were great with or without him, like i said before they lost anyways. whats the diff between 1 player and 1 missing piece? hey i didn’t mean to imply that it was his fault, but if your going to pay player the money we’re all expecting that he’s going to get then you expect that he can prove something. like Manny. so when do we give our young guys a chance to prove themselves? after we trade them to other teams? i know it would be crazy to think this but i would rather spend the money on a pitcher like CC. same situation. Brewers traded for him, he delivered.

by HALO_86 on Nov 1, 2008 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Tex

so if another team in the ALW was actually any good this yr. it was a tight race down the stretch, we ended up losing the West with Tex, would you feel he’s still worth the money? it doesn’t matter if the Braves were a bad team desperate to win. the whole NLE sucked in ‘07 and they faded with the Mets while i think the Phillies sneaked in. yeah i know its not his fault what happened in Texas. i don’t care about Texas, i never brought up Texas. its what he did for the Braves and Angels. he was the missing piece or player that everyone, including myself, thought was suppose to take us over the top. if it was the awful pitching of the Angels as you say it is then lets spend the money on pitchers.

by HALO_86 on Nov 1, 2008 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

80 wins????

without Tex the Angels were going to win 95-100 games. they were on that pace before we traded for him. so don’t sit here and panick that we’re going to end up being a 80 win team without him. yeah our other players that struggled, yeah i agree, but its called a learning curve. these aren’t vets who struggled. these were players with 1-3 yrs exp. not everyone is going to explode into the playoffs. i would rather spend the money elsewhere or save it until midseason when the pretenders fall out of div races and start trading away proven bats we can rent for 2 months then spend all that money on someone that doesn’t garantee success. look at the NYY. all that money on A-Rod, i think they were sitting at home during the playoffs. Tex just like A-Rod fans love the stats, but what have they prove? nothing but look at my stats, its not my fault my teams suck.

by HALO_86 on Nov 1, 2008 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

80 wins, ya

whos gonna carry this team offensively? Tell me how vlad’s numbers were before Teixeira and after teixeira. Vlad will continue to decline every year. So you can expect what you saw from vlad from april-july and possibly worse as he continues to age.

how would our offense have been if vlad wasnt on our team 04-07? he was the only threat in our lineup. My point was that if we were to just avoid teixeira as you suggest, because he didnt single handedly hit 29 home runs in the ALDS and pitch all 9 innings, our offense relies on who?

I also think according to your logic, the rays should get rid of bj upton and evan longoria because they obviously werent the keys to winning a world series. Sure, they were the best players during the playoffs but they didnt win the world series so theyre clearly not worth it. SHIP EM OUT

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 1, 2008 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

fyi, since you seem to be confused

i said 80 wins is what this team is looking at if we were to stand pat, put morales in at first, let teixeira walk and go back to and older vlad being our one guy in the lineup to drive in all the runs.

our pitchings good, ya, but youre not going to win a world series without power hitters who can work the count, get on base, and both drive in AND create runs by getting on base.

sounds to me like you want to be the san diego padres and just devote all our resources to pitching and aging veterans

difference

those are homegrown Rays. Tex is an outsider looking for the biggest payday for what. Stats. he’s done nothing else. how many wins did they have before Tex came? yeah if you didn’t notice they Rays made the plaoffs for the first time. no one really expected them to make that run. they exceeded expectation this yr. Upton was almost traded because the team almost ran out of patience with him before this yr. Longoria, rookie, hmmm….maybe we should give Wood a chance since he really hasn’t been given the shot like Longoria has. he can’t evaluate players over a 14-30 day span, if thats the case then we shouldn’t even have a farm system.

by HALO_86 on Nov 1, 2008 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

fyi

who said i wanted aging vets? i want to give our young guys a chance. just like the Rays gave their young guys a chance. you think there going to be a 80 win season without Tex? wow you must think Tex is the next coming. all the money on A-Rod. what has he produced? big stats, i guess that would satisfy you. then start complaining not having a pitching staff. keep spending it on pitching a defense and the hitting will come around if you give the the young guys a chance. spend the money on players when we did on Vlad, that give results other than just stats.

Do you know what Teix did for the braves?

.317 .404 .615 (avg/obp/slg) with 17 HRs in 54 games!!!!
the braves not winning is in no way texs fault.
TEX IS A HITTER WHO MAKES THE WHOLE TEAM BETTER! he is a person you can rely on, who will make pitchers scared. he changes the whole dynamic. for example, vlads up with a runner on second and two outs late in the game. Hitting behind Vlad is morales. The other team is gonn awalk vlad and chances are morales gets out 66% of the time. Now consider Teix is on deck. Tex doesnt get out 60% of the time. But also, tex is just a much better hitter and 300% better defensively

here we go again on stats. i never said his stats aren’t impressive. is that all you guys care about. don’t you guys like the end results? i never said it was his fault the Braves didn’t make the playoffs. all i know is the Braves didn’t improve overall and either did the Angels when it comes to results. its crazy how u guys all think he’s this baseball god. stats aren’t everything. guys like CC and Manny deserve whatever they get because they produced when it counted. Tex didn’t do anything that the Angels would have done without him.

but he just isn’t worth all this money he’s going to get from someone. i agree you want professionals in the locker room but something about him seems wrong. he seemed to be trying too hard. like he was trying to change his image, trying to get a big payday. i wonder what he was like in Texas and Atlanta with his teammates and fans. he seemed soo robotic with interviews. don’t get me wrong, we can’t go into the season with 2-3 unproven bats but Tex just isn’t worth all this.

dude

of course manny is going to make an enormous impact on A MEDIOCRE, .500 TEAM.

we had THE BEST RECORD in baseball when we acquired mark teixeira. Obviously the room for serious impact favored manny tremendously.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 1, 2008 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok, heres the thing. The bottom line is winning.

How do you win? YOU GET THE BEST PLAYERS THAT YOU CAN GET! how do you do that? YOU EVALUATE THEM! these evaluations determine whether or not a player is good. Obviously if you have a player like bonds who just gets his stats and couldnt give a fuck about his teammates then you have a problem. Find me one instance where Teix told someone he hated every person on the angels and tried to make them lose. IT DIDNT HAPPEN. You talk about manny taking the dodgers from a shitty team into a great one. Manny made the dodgers a 30-26 team! THATS ALL HE DID! What did Teix make the angels? 33-22! Ya, obviously the angels were better than the dodgers, but my point still stands. Put the Angels in any other division, they win handily. Put the dodgers in any other division and they WOULD NOT HAVE WON! (based purely on record).

you made my point

your right Manny had more upside in helping the shitty Dodgers then Tex did with the Angels. that 33-22 record was the same pace they were on before he came. so no real impact there. he was brought here for 1 reason. 1 reason only. help the Angels get past the Redsox. now like i said it wasn’t his fault it didn’t happen, but why pay a guy all that money when he’s proven he isn’t the answer. whole point you put the Dodgers in any other Div and they suck, yeah same with Tex. thats why when the Braves traded for him they were out of playoff picture, and after aquiring him they still missed the playoffs. he’s all stats.

Tex?

wow let me get this straight. if your running a team and you have a certain budget. your saying if your team can finish lets say 100-62 and lose in the ALDS with or without Tex you would go ahead and give a player 25M/yr to give you the same results, because ????. you want to give money away? congratulations you can be the GM of the lame NYY. i would rather use the money wisely and not just give it to someone who hasn’t proven anything but all those shiny stats you guys seem to be in love with.

by HALO_86 on Nov 2, 2008 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

Do you know why the angels "only" went 33-22 over the time teix was here?

ITS BECAUSE WE HAD FRIGGIN S-ROD, EYBAR, MOSELEY, GMJ, WILLITS, and every other mediocre player on our roster or AAAs playing half of the games. Also, THE GAMES DID NOT MATTER! Wheres the guarentee that we win 100 games if we take morales/teix? Wheres the guarentee Morales hits amazingly? Wheres the guarentee Vlad still has enough left? Wheres the guarentee we can replace GAs #s with Willits/Rivera/GMJ (if he resigns), wheres the guarentee Torii doesnt regress? Wheres the guarentee that Moseley/Adenhart/Greene/FA signing will be a decent 5th starter? Wheres the guarentee that Ervin and Saunders not only stay healthy but keep their level of production? Wheres the guarentee Weaver will not regress? Wheres the guarentee Aybar can actually handle routing ground balls and be adequate with the bat? Wheres the guarentee that Wood hits 25 HRs? Wheres the guarentee shields/arredondo can hold the closer spot? Wheres the guarentee Speier doesnt get worse? Wheres the guarentee oliver/jepsen will pitch well this year (if they are on our team)? Will Teix guarentee all these things? No. What he guarentees us is a year of at least .300/.400/.550 with 35+ HRs and possibly our only legitamate hitter that doesnt potential suck or is too old?
The reason, the only reason, the Angels won 100 games this year is because of pitching. Lackey and Escobar go down. How bout if Lackey and Ervin go down in ST this year? The rotation would be Saunders/Weaver/?//?. Teix is one less thing to worry about, and instead we can count on him.

if all those what ifs?

only diff from having Tex before and after was Kotch. team was on a roll before he came here. yeah i know it was the regular season but they pretty much dominated the Redsox during the regular season. only big diff was no Kotch and Izzy during the ALDS. like i said before i didn’t mind the trade for Tex because like everyone else in here i thought we were 1 bat away from getting over the Redsox. i was wrong.

by HALO_86 on Nov 3, 2008 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

garantee?

your right there are no garantees in the game. with that attitude then whats the point of signing Tex. why not let him go if you fear half of those things happening. were going to have bigger problems then @1B. it starts from pitching and defense. hitting you can adjust through trades because pitching is scarce. so i’d rather give the money to a guy like CC then Tex because CC did what was expected when he went to the Brewers. Tex had 2 chances he didn’t come through. just like his Boras playmate A-Rod. look at my stats i did my job. right?

by HALO_86 on Nov 3, 2008 10:40 AM PST up reply actions

CC did amazing

But thats neither here nor there. Our concern is Teix. Teix guarentees that if a few of the offensive question marks do not produce, we will at least have an amazing middle of the order power hitting defensive stud 1B. Do you know how injured the Red Sox were during the games between us? I mean i dont want to try and take away too much from us, but this is almost like the M’s in spring training. We need to beat them when it really counts.

Tex

let me restate how i feel about Tex. i think he is a awesome player. he’s in his prime and he’s going to put up awesome numbers. even though i like Kotch it was the right thing to do trading for Tex. i’m not saying i’m against re-signing him its just that i don’t want to go overboard with the money. honestly even though Arte put LA in front of the Angels he still isn’t getting LA type of revenue.so in other words we have a budget. were not the NYY. i just want to make sure we have money left over to support the rest of the team. i guess i look at A-Rod and all that money and he hasn’t done anything in NY. what happens if we don’t make the playoffs with Tex, were stuck with him.

contract?

i’m just throwing that out there. lets face it Boras is an ass but he’s the best agent in the game. i don’t think Tex is going to give the Angels any discount. if he gives a discount its going to be with the Orioles. he’s an east coast guy so i think if the Angels want to sign him they have to overwhelm him with an offer to stay on the west coast. like my guy tells me since CC is a west coast guy the East coast teams have to overwhelm him with an offer to play over there.

do u think its good to platoon young players who are top shelf prospects? i hate when soccia does that. i can understand doing that to Willits, but guys like Woods or Morales, or even Brown. these guys have proven it at every level. i just want them to get their fair share of AB to see what they can do when their in a grove.

by HALO_86 on Nov 5, 2008 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

they have to prove they can hit and be productive before they can play full time

especially so on a contending team. You dont want to throw away 400+ABs Brandon Wood and hand him the job over letting proven productive although not necesarilly spectacular players (like Q or figgins, etc…)
Im not saying that giving Wood these at bats would be thowing them away, but they would have been if we had done it last year or the beggining of this year. We platoon so they understand how to produce, then slowly give htem the full job

Wood

lets use Wood for example. before he was ever called up to the Majors he was considered pretty much a top level prospect. you can make trades with him as a centerpiece. now that he’s been brought up and struggled a bit its harder to trade him as a centerpiece. his value has gone way done. i remember when those rumors were out there about the Manny trade a couple yrs ago with Wood as a centerpiece. with the top prospects i think you have to throw them out there. i’m not saying throw 3 rookies into the lineup. if your a good team you can absorb 1 young bat or 2. but if they get only part time status, great if they produce, but if they don’t they lose all their value for trades. thats all. i understand what your saying

ok. lets compare

using baseball prospectus fielding runs above average (FRAA) tells how many runs a player costs his team by how bad/good his defense is. Lets compare similar numbers, so i picked Kendrys 2006 year when he played 56 games at first, and Teixieras 2008 with the angels (51 games).
Morales was 2 runs above average (5.79 over 162 game season)
Teixeira was 4 runs above average (12.71 over 162 games).
That means that over the course of the season, Teixera is 7 runs better defensively than Morales.
Im sorry, its not actually 300, its 222.
Also, Morales best season by far defensively was 2006. But ill grant you morales is a better defender than i thought he was.
Also, just for kicks, kotchmans #s. in 100 games this year for the angels, kotch was a +9 above average =14.58 for a 162 game season
