Let the offseason speculation begin!
well, since we're officially out of it now, I guess it's time to devote a thread to offseason moves. YOU become the Ninja! Who stays and who goes? What options get exercised? What's your rotation and your lineup look like for 2009?
Remember, we have to assume that our payroll is going to stay about the same, so let's make this realistic... no "sign Tex, CC Manny, KRod and everyone else!" posts.
I'm genuinely curious about this... how about it?
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan and may or may not be a reflection of human evolution, divine enlightenment or nine cans into a 12-pack.

i'll start
Sign – Mark Teixeira.
Let walk – Anderson, K-Rod, Rivera, Garland
I say we move Figgins to LF, Morales to RF, Vlad to DH and Wood to 3B. Napoli is the everyday catcher, Aybar and Izturis platoon again until someone takes over. Matthews is still a very high-priced 5th OF (unless someone is dumb enough to trade for him) and hopefully Willits never again sees the field at the Big A.
Make a run at CC, but don’t break the bank. Someone will step up in Spring Training. Also make a run at Fuentes… but only a 2 year deal, of possible. If not, take your shot with Arredondo at closer.
Lineup:
Figgins LF
Kendrick 2B
Teixeira 1B
Guerrero DH
Hunter CF
Napoli C
Morales RF
Wood 3B
Izturis/Aybar SS
Rotation:
Lackey
Santana
Saunders
Weaver

listen, this isn’t 2002 anymore… hacking at everything and not preaching patience WILL NOT work in this league any longer. It’s been exploited time and time again (as we just witnessed). Either catch up with the times, or don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

If they fail to sign Tex, however, keep Morales at 1B and make a serious run at Burrell.

just what we need another aging outfielder. I don’t doubt that he is good, but methinks his power numbers might be slightly inflated by playing in Philly, not quite sure, haven’t looked at any splits. just my opinion

I think he’ll be 32… so a 3 yr. deal would do for me.
If not… we’ll get Dunn and get a batting coach that’ll help him with his strikeout problem.

Let walk – K-Rod, Rivera, Garland
Trade bait – Aybar (DEFINITELY). Maybe Kendrick. Adenhart if we have to.
Free Agents:
Go after an Average-Big Time Starter (not necessarily a priority). Some coming to mind are… Burnett, Dempster, Lowe, Oliver Perez, Sabathia, Sheets. Smoltz.
An above average power OF/3B or SS… some coming to mind are….(in ranking order)
Burrell, Dunn, Bradley, Blalock
A nice reliever. Some coming to mind are…. Fuentes, D. Marte, K. Wood, Lyon, Beimel, Farnsworth.

Teixeria (1B)
Guerrero (RF/DH)
FA Signing (3B/SS or LF)

Like it, but Morales is a better hitter than Wood and Napoli.....He needs to bat behind Guerrero
and Napoli right behind him……do you not remember the BACK-TO-BACK’s that Morales and Napoli Had?
They are a Seriously Dangerous 1-2 punch…….and with Tex Guerrero and Hunter they would be a 1-2-3-4-5 Punch. LOTS OF RUNS!!

Ideas
HAVE to sign: Tex. Dude is the best player we have. Give him 5 years and 100 large, hope he takes it.
Would like to sign: Oliver, Juan Rivera. Give him consistent playing time and he can produce, does anyone remember his monster second half in 2006?
So long Chief: GA. It’ll be tough to see the most productive Angel of all time go but it is well overdue. Had a nice year but hasn’t really given us anything since 2003.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out: K-Rod, Garland
Do NOT Touch: CC Sabathia. Dude is damaged goods. The Brewers have absolutely thrown his arm off (as they should have) and I would not go anywhere near this guy.
Move to make: We HAVE to get a real third baseman. Figgins has been a nice substitute but the fact that we have gotten no power from the corner infield spot in the last several seasons is a joke. Move Figgins back to the middle infield and trade for Garrett Atkins because Colorado is ready to unload him.

i agree with everything but garret atkins
first of all, he is a defensive liability, we saw how important defense at third can be this series with the sux. Also, look at his home road splits, he has benefited a LOT by coors field. The guy is horrid on the road. And I agree with acuda, time to give Wood a full season, he raked in september.

So we all agree then
that something must be done about 3B because Figgins, bless his heart, is no third baseman. I am just so weary of handing over full time starting jobs to unproven players like we have been doing a lot the past few years. Hell, look what it did to us in this series alone. Also, keep in mind that we played a majority of our games this September against the garbage from the AL West.

OFF SEASON TO DO LIST
MUST DO: Pick up Vladdy’s option. Re-sign Tex. Two no brainers.
MIGHT DO: Offer GA a one year deal in the 5mil. range. He probably won’t want to take the pay cut or the reduced role, but if so, his .280, 25, 75 aren’t going to be found for less elsewhere. He’s earned that much, but no more. Offer Frankie $15 mil for three years. He’ll probably want more money and more years. If the Mets offer him that, so long K-Rod. This may be a stretch but since Aybar and Kendrick have great upside but also injury prone, getting an insurance policy up the middle would help. One, move Figgins to his more natural position at SS or 2B or two, offer former SS Orlando Cabrera a one year deal. OC likes it here and we like him. At his age he won’t get many multi-year deals and he’s still as good a SS as anybody. And a legit #2 hitter. Three, put Kendrick or Aybar along with either a Wood or Rodriguez and a Moseley or Bootcheck for a power hitting 3B. We haven’t had one since Troy Glaus. Garret Atkins or Adrian Beltre top my list. Let Rivera go. Let Garland go.
2009 LINEUP

WILDCARD: Despite all the fawning by the Times and LA media about the Doyers, their owner we all know is super cheap. If he lets the best thing to hit Dodger Stadium go after two months, I say Arte make Manny an offer. He can play LF. He can DH. He wanted to come here three years ago. Outside of Boston and with clear rules and expectations I don’t think he’d be a problem. Would you want to stay in pasty-ville with the likes of Youkilis and Drew? Me either. He, Tex and Vladdy would be a killer lineup that not even the obnoxious Fenwayers could ignore.

Moves to make:
Keep Tex. Beg him to stay and commit to transforming the organization’s hitting philosophy to one that mirrors his.
Let GA go. There is no reason to keep him other than sentimental ones. He is a below average offensive LF. If you don’t see that, you’re living in the past and imagining the former GA. I’d insert Morales into LF.
Vlad should DH. Give Rivera a shot at RF. Or sign an OF with OBP and SLG skills who is not passed his prime. To do this though, the front office is going to have to learn when a player hits his prime, though. Not only was GMJ passed his prime when we got him, his track record easily predicted how bad he was going to be.
I’m scared of CC Sabathia. He’s been run as a hard a rental car the last two years, beyond how hard he had been worked at any other time in his career. That screams arm injury to me, a la Bartolo Colon (who was also an overworked rental before we got him). Also, as the playoffs show, you really don’t need All-Stars 1-5 in the rotation, our top 3 is good enough for the playoffs.
Let K-Fraud walk. Or pay him what he’s worth, not what he wants. Also, know that if he is retained, he’s not the best arm in the pen and shouldn’t be relied upon as such. Maybe Escobar becomes the closer, or even a set-up guy. I actually believe the set-up guys are more important than closers if we’re going to stick to the mentality that a closer only pitches the 9th. Sometimes the game is on the line in the 7th or 8th. Shields and Arredondo have done well in this spot and K-Fraund would not have if he was in their shoes. Just another thing to keep in mind when considering K-Fraud’s real value.
by snowhor on Oct 7, 2008 8:29 AM PDT 0 recs
And:
I’d give Wood a shot at SS. Aybar is an offensive zero.
As for HK, he’s young, so I’d give him another year to prove himself. Though, he does embody the swing at every pitch mentality of this team (which may actually be the reason Tex may chose another team even if the money is similar).

First, let Garland, G.A., Oliver, Quinlan, and Rivera walk
Second, use the $30 mil in savings to sign Teixeira. Seven-year deal, if need be.
Third, pick up Vladdie’s option.
Fourth, trade Chone Figgins, and make Brandon Wood your everyday 3Bman. We need power, and salary savings.
Fourth, if you can package a trade around Chone Figgins to somehow dislodge Matt Kemp from the OF-heavy, IF-desperate Dodgers (by, say, including Maicer Izturis and someone else as a sweetener).
Fifth, tell GMJ he’ll never start in this town again, and see if you can use that to waive his no-trade.
Sixth, tell Kendry to play LF and RF in winter ball this year.
Seventh, explore any one-year Jon Garland/Paul Byrd types out there, as rotation insurance. Nothing more than a one-year contract, whether by F.A. or trade.
Eighth, plan on a bullpen with Bulger, Jepsen, and Rich Thompson. Time for some young (and cheap!) power arms back there.
Ninth, after all is said and done, if your salary level isn’t too high, and you’ve accomplished most of the above, go ahead and re-sign Frankie if you are able.
Tenth, send Howie Kendrick to Dagoba, to become a Man.
Matt Brown can be our next Quinlan/Wooten character, and back up Wood at 3B. S-Rod can be the third middle infielder if Izturis is traded, or the 4th if he’s not.
But if you can’t sign Teixeira, this whole scenario gets scrambled.

He’s getting up there, but probably had a good number of pitches left in that arm of his.
I thought I read him talking about retirement a few months back though.
Also, he seems to be a great guy to have with all the kids in the pen.

Teixeria is a must, if we do nothing else we got to sign him. Probably extend Lackey another 3yrs and Vlad 2-3yrs. Really like the idea of getting Manny, would really look good behind Tex but probably not going to happen. What do guys think about maybe trading for Aubrey Huff or maybe signing Rafael Furcal or Raul Ibanez?

Tough loss last night.. I watched the whole game here in Nova Scotia… The one thing was the game were close,we just didn’t get the right momentum…..
Not sure what is in store for this team in the offseason. The one thing I will say is I still think Vlad can produce.. He had 30 doubles this year, hit .300 and had 27 hr..I would like to see him DH more and with his days off,I think he will have the same type of year he has always had..Pick up the option , work on a final 5 year deal…
I would love to see Tex resign, but I see him wanting an 8 year 160 mill deal… So will the franchise sign him to that… The Yanks and Mets will be right there 2 for his services.
Giambi is a rumor in Toronto as well..
As for GA,he is another model of consistency man. Highly underrated and respected…A great player who has had a marvelous career. If I was in charge I’d offer him 10 mill a year.. Looking at what GMJ gets paid, its a good offer.
I’d prob not sign K-Rod… I say go with sheilds and arrendondo, let them try it,save the money for Juan Rivera,GA,Tex and maybe sign a pitcher

My Opinion
Let walk: Garland, K-Rod, Rivera, Oliver, Izturis (total salary: $27.2 million)
Sign: Teixeira, cheap lefty reliever, Darren O’Day (he’s better than a lot of people think – his peripherals were great this year)
Replace: Garland with Escobar or Adenhart, K-Rod with Arredondo and Arredondo with O’Day, Rivera with Morales, Oliver with FA, Izturis with Wood/S-Rod
Extensions: Pick up Vlad and Lackey’s options and start working on extensions. Buyout Garret and give him a 3 year, $21 million deal. Start working on extensions for Santana and Napoli.
Trade: GMJ and Speier if at all possible
Essentially this is a wash as you’re saving $30 million total and spending about that on FA’s and extensions. This gives us a lineup and roster of:
Figgins, 3B
Kendrick, 2B
Teixeira, 1B
Vlad, DH
Hunter, CF
Anderson, LF
Morales, RF
Napoli, C
Wood, SS
Bench: Quinlan, Rodriguez, Aybar, Mathis, Willits
SP Lackey
SP Santana
SP Weaver
SP Saunders
SP Escobar/ Adenhart
RP Arredondo, Shields, O’Day, Speier/Trade Return, Jepsen, FA Lefty
Having Teix for a full year, Kendrick (if he stays healthy), and Morales instead of GMJ should improve our offense. Mathis will not get 100 starts again, hopefully not even 40. Our starting pitching will be just as good, if not better (assuming Saunders and Santana didn’t have career years). The big question mark will be our bullpen. Can Arredondo reproduce this performance? Will Shields hold up? Can Speier bounce back or can we trade him for someone better? Can we sign a decent FA lefty to replace Oliver (assuming Oliver will be too expensive)?

Because we were a good team this year?
We lost in the postseason because of one home run given up by a closer who won’t be on the team next year and one stupid managerial decision/missed bunt that was a once in a lifetime type of thing.
I don’t know what was wrong with Kendrick, but he can’t be THIS bad, right? I would be very surprised to see this team do worse next year than it did this year, and that includes the playoffs.

We were good
VERY good. But we still didn’t get it done in the playoffs and against Boston. Who knows if this series will have long term effects on Howie’s psyche. There definitely is not one specific play or event that cost us this postseason. It was simply because we didn’t execute and choked away a lot of easy plays that we would normally make,

Like many of you
I would bring back Tex. But I just don’t think it’s going to happen. In fact, I don’t even want to allow myself to hope that it will happen because it will hurt that much more when we hear in January that he signs an 8 year, $172 million deal with the Yankees. Is it realistic to think we can sign both Dunn and Abreu? This scenario would involve not bringing back GA, Garland, Frankie, Rivera, and Oliver. I’m thinking that Dunn and Abreu might be undervalued because neither can play much defense, Dunn strikes out, Abreu is clearly in his decline phase, etc. Defense would be a concern – I haven’t seen Dunn play first, but I’m assuming he’d be bad, and Abreu might even be worse than Vlad in right. They certainly are flawed, but they would add a jolt of power and OBP. If we could only sign one, I’d choose Dunn and insert Kendry Morales in the lineup.
As far as pitching goes, I’d think about signing Hitoki Iwase (http://www.npbtracker.com/2008/08/player-profile-hitoki-iwase/) if he chose to come over from Japan – a lefty reliever with closer experience and good stuff.

Noooooooo....
Abreu is over the hill and overpriced….(he’ll cost more than GA and I’d actually rather have GA). If you’re willing to pay for Abreu… you might as well give Rivera the money and give him a full season in the OF.
And yes, he somehow DOES play worse defense than Vlad. Did anyone see him the last time the Yanks came to the Big A?
Dunn is NOT NEARLY as good as Teixeria and has a fairly inflated value too. If we can get him as our 3rd OF… then fine. But not him over Tex. 8 years 172 Million? That’s all? DO IT.
