Around SBN: The Definitive Case For Will Muschamp, Part 1 Bar-right-arrows

If you are a player, do you want to lose that way?

For me, I have to question whether the guys in that locker room were happy with a squeeze call.  Lefty at the plate, he does not bunt conventionally(he slashes his bunts hard), 2-0 count, tie game top of the 9th, season on the line, the guy lined out to deep center last at bat, and got the game winning hit the night before.  That tells me my manager has to come up with a gimmick for us to win.  The odds are much better to let him swing away, than go for the squeeze.

I also question Willits in right, and why Oliver didn;t come in to face the lefties ... but those are typical Scioscia moves ... and not as frustrating as the squeeze.

Overall, an all around failure by the whole team & staff.  Although the starters did do an amazing job considering the defense and offense failures every inning.

I Manage and Play on my team..........

and that was Stupid. I would rather go down Swinging, as a player and as a Manager than go down like that. If I dont trust the guy battin I Pinch Hit for him plain and simple. There is not need for that stupid ass shit.

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing I have a problem with is...

That pitch was TOTALLY buntable. If not… make some contact! He’s a major league baseball player who’s so adept at bunting… he fakes it first pitch in at least 2 of his 4 at bats a game.

Yes. Scioscia made some HORRID calls… but I thought Aybar was even MORE pathetic. He makes some sort of contact… we would NOT have to complain. It would have been 3-2. Shield’s wouldn’t have been in the game. K-Rod, while no better than Shields, did not pitch a full inning the inning prior and I’d say… we’re very likely to win the game.

Aybar had only struck out in 11 out of his last 114 abs

So lately he’s been striking out less than 10% of his plate appearances and I know it has to be even lower than that when he’s had a 2-0 count. I was praying he wouldn’t squeeze but Soth is stuck in 2002. And like people said 2002 was all about the xbh combined with moving runners.

GMJ should have definitely been in RF at the latest once Bay reached 2nd. Gary has a better arm, he’s made some great throws from RF this year, I remember one in Chi where he went down the line, slid popped up real quick and threw a perfect strike to 2nd. I can’t think of Willits throwing anyone out. Dude just doesn’t have the arm to play RF.

Plus people were playing way too deep. I saw way too many bloops this series result in runs because the OF’s were playing in their warning track no double defense.

My biggest problem is that aybar doesnt have solid bunting fundamentals

He is a guy who slap bunts for hits. Heck, I don’t even like the sac bunt they had Howie do. You got your 3 shots to get the runner in, but obviously mike was thinking about the squeeze already. The one game we had some power, is the game we won. Figgins had more xbh than the 2-6 guys. i think naps batted 7th when he got his homers. God help them if they don’t sign Teix.

Whole season on a one pitch manager gamble

Hell no I wouldn’t want to lose that way! Play Ball!

by The Clyde on Oct 6, 2008 11:51 PM PDT   0 recs

If you are going to it...

Aybar need to get his bat on the ball, any way possible, even if he has to throw his bat on the the ball. To not get his bat on the ball is completely unexceptable.

If I was a player on this team,

I’d have a lot more to be embarrassed about then losing on a squeeze play.

Captain, there are doubt's...

Let's be honest.

Everyone would be applauding Scioscia had the squeeze play worked. On a 2-0 count, no one was expecting the pitch to be where it was. Willits on 3rd, Aybar at the plate – I wasn’t surprised to see Scioscia put on the squeeze at all. It was a fluke play that went in the other teams favor. I have no problem with the decision whatsoever.

Red Sox, we're comin!

They should have expected the pitch to be where it was, they were expecting the squeeze.

Also, they didn’t mind pitching around Aybar to set up the double play.

they were relying on doubling off aybar and figgins?

that is quite a gamble in itself.

No they were relying on the squeeze and pitching around it.

Setting up a possible double play wasn’t the first priority, but an acceptable gamble to foil the squeeze.

by snowhor on Oct 7, 2008 8:52 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thats were the first 2 pitches had been thrown

Bad call!! I sat there saying don’t squeeze don’t do it. Everyone knew it was going to happen. One of the reasons a squeeze does work is because it has a little surprise element mixed in. No Squeeze equals 3-0 count right there. Guy was not going to throw a zero fastball over the dish.

I would love to hear the Red Sox dugout thoughts prior to the Aybar AB. Pitch up and in make it hard to bunt down. If your pitching in during what you think is a squeeze situation and you hear squeeze from your defense it is easy to throw it at the batter. Its coached that way.

This was a mickey mouse play from an organization that has worked hard to shed its mickey mouse reputation.

Someone commented in the game thread last night that he wondered how Arte Moreno felt about his large market, top 5 payroll team losing the playoffs on a blown squeeze play. Very astute comment.

by snowhor on Oct 7, 2008 8:53 AM PDT   0 recs

I said that, and I can't help but think Arte did not like it one bit.

I thought they were pitching around Aybar, but wasn’t sure if Papelbon was going to come in. Papelbon had already embarrassed Figgy and GA every time he faced them, so maybe he was going to come in and try and k them both. Aybar was recently tough to strike out, so a chopper or fly out was much more likely than a non scoring play. We’ll never know, just like vlad’s baserunning mistake/gamble. I take no solace in knowing the Angels played horribly, and might be the better team.

i still cannot believe it!

There is an "Angel in the outfield" and his name is GA! ps. he is lazy but not a bum GO HALOS!

by wallispdub1 on Oct 7, 2008 9:14 AM PDT   0 recs

no out, man on 2nd

a base hit scores him. i think howie could’ve gotten that hit instead of sacrificing a precious out. but then again he probably could not have and then you have aybar and figgy up after that. wow, this hurts.

by SCHalo on Oct 7, 2008 11:46 AM PDT   0 recs

I don't think the squeeze itself was a bad call

But the timing was. Make the guy throw a strike first. Or at least wait until the count is 3-0 and he has to throw a strike.

That being said, Aybar has to get his bat on the ball. I know it was a really tough pitch to bunt, but he’s gotta do everything he can in that situation. More blame to Aybar in my opinion.

I feel the need, the need...for speed!
