Reading the 'T' leaves.

I'm sure this angle isn't something entirely fresh to Halo fans but looking at Tex's comments just seem to further cement the feeling that he won't be wearing Angel red next year.

here's just a couple of quotes from Teixeira (one following the series loss to Boston, one just before game 4) for your consumption:

“It wasn’t supposed to end this way,” Teixeira said. “I’m just feeling for everybody in this room right now.”

Star-divide

source
translation: "Feeling for everybody else, that is - I'm out the door!  See ya suckas"

"I’ve enjoyed my time (in Anaheim) and it’s a nice place to have a little 2-month vacation for my family," said Teixeira. "I still have to go to work every day, but my family’s enjoying it."

source
translation: "The kids had a good time at Disneyland, it'll be nice to be back home on the East Coast."

"I wasn't even thinking about Anaheim until I was traded here," Teixeira said. "It's an amazing organization. I have tremendous respect for the organization, from Arte Moreno to the last guy on the bench. It's definitely going to give me something to think about."

source
translation: "Cha-Ching!  Another bidder to drive up the price!"

feel free to add your own quotes/translations/speculations.

I've got a small bit of hope that Teixeira will prove me and many others wrong, but it's growing smaller with every comment (both pre and post playoffs).

shame, he's the type of player we desperately need to divorce this franchise  from the type of "Small Balls" Playoff showings we've had recently.

*sigh*

as much as i want to resign the guy as well

i can’t help but see those statements the same way you do.

he just isn’t coming off as the west coast type.

Red Sox, we're comin!

It's a business...

don’t forget that for a second. Bora$ is steering this ship to the highest bidder.

by Wytelitning on Oct 7, 2008 11:41 AM PDT   0 recs

fully aware.

obvious from his comments that Tex is a businessman first when it comes to this offseason.

just saying it’s hard to see how we fit into that business decision (other than driving up the price) from his statements.

it wouldnt be the end of the world if he left

he obviously wasnt the missing link to a title.

we had the best record without him, got swept without him and got swept with him.

hes amazing and was easily our best hitter

but the draft picks certainly wont hurt. and neither will the ones from frankie

a small 1-2 year downturn aimed at stocking our farm might be in the best interest of the team’s longevity. Even if we dont go to poach the giant free agents, a team with vlad, torii hunter, howie(regular season howie), lackey, ervin, wood, napoli is still good enough to compete in the AL west. It doesnt take much as we know.

maybe we hold off on sabathia and teixeira and those Type A free agents, really focus on redefining what we look for in the draft and start to steer our philosophy just a hair towards more disciplined hitters

by ihearhowie2.0 on Oct 7, 2008 12:13 PM PDT   0 recs

i'm not necessarily saying he's THE missing link

but more of his type on our squad couldn’t hurt, right?

If he goes he goes.

He is a great player, but never seemed to “buy into” what we are doing here. Many players would have been extremely pumped to come over from Atlanta to make a run at the title, he said the right things, but clearly wasn’t that excited. To be honest with you, Kotchman may not have gotten as many singles, as Tex, but he would have shown up against the Red Sox, we brought him here for that elusive pop in the post-season, he clearly did not provide that. All that being said, I would love to retain him, and give him a chance to become a Mr. October for the Angels, he is a great player, but i will not be crushed if we lose him, and save 150-180 million dollars, after all, how many more singles players do we need on this team?

by bruinbrah on Oct 7, 2008 1:43 PM PDT   0 recs

to be honest i dont miss kotchman

and i dont think i will next year. Kotchman was a nice glove but i think angel fans tended to overrate him a tad because he was a homegrown guy. His major skills(patience, walks) were no where to be found this season. We traded for a guy who’s yearly averages far excede kotchman’s best case scenario ceiling.

wish casey the best, but his departure doesnt worry me in the slightest

by ihearhowie2.0 on Oct 7, 2008 1:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably shouldn't have mentioned Kotchman...

I was just trying to make the point that tex hit a whole lot of singles, and not much more, which is what i would expect from Kotchman. Would Kotch have hit as many, probably not, but while tex had a great series, he did not do what we brought him in to do, get a big hit. In retrospect he didn’t have a ton of opportunities to do so, but he did have some, and didn’t capitalize. Between tex and Kotch there isn’t any question as to who i would prefer, all I am saying is that we didn’t get anything out of tex that we wouldn’t have gotten out of Kotch, so losing him, wont be the end of the world for me.

by bruinbrah on Oct 7, 2008 2:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

With that theory then we only keep Napoli

and everyone else we trade, or you don’t care if they are traded……… right?

Good pitching beats good hitting. Their pitchers turned the clubs power hitters into singles and the singles hitters into OUTS

Tex did his part its the others that did not get it done

he didn't "buy into what we are doing here"?

like… hacking at everything and hitting singles?

Tex is a GREAT hitter, GREAT fielder, and an all-around GREAT player. sure, it won’t be the end of the world if he leaves, but he sure did some awesome things for our team.

Kotch would've had that.

Forgot

You two are so wise. First, his comments lead me to believe that he didn’t want to come to Anaheim. I get that from his comments in the MSM. He says the right thing, but indicates in his statements that is going elsewhere, which to me, means that he doesn’t buy into being an Angel, regardless if that is because of pay, location, or philosophy. Second, I never said he wasn’t a great hitter/ player, I said he wasn’t the big bat that we have been missing. How many RBI’s did he have? How many home runs? So instead of jumping down my throat about what a great player he is, which i mentioned several times, look at the point of what I am saying, that I PERSONALLY am not going to lose any sleep over losing him. Would it be great to keep him? Yes, but in the end is it worth draining all the financial resources to do so? that is a decision for Arte and Reagins.

Also its funny that you mention “hitting singles” since that is all that he did.

by bruinbrah on Oct 7, 2008 4:39 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah OPS of 1.017

for the playoffs is awful (season OPS for the Angels 1.081)……….let him walk and get another guy that does that.

But can he punt a baseball with his glove?

I actually got the impression he enjoyed the Angels clubhouse.
Who knows?

Boras is the devil...

He will fleece the highest bidder. I love Tex, thought he was awesome, but he’s not going to be giving us any shopping bargains.

We gave Kotch away for four games…..

Your defending OPD champion. Respect it, bitches.

tbh - we would have had those 4 games regardles of whether or not we "gave Kotch away"

the rest of the AL West was dead at the time of the deal

I know...

That’s why I said we gave him away.

If we don’t re-sign Tex, we will have literally handed Atlanta Kotchman for nothing.

not true

we’ll have 2 prime draft choices if we lose Tex. For all you know those two picks could be college players that are in the bigs by 2010……even late 2009 if you select a closer that is ML ready.

Or the picks can be HS kids that are the next Tex and Jake Peavy (selected in like 6 and 15th round, respectively).

Point is, the people who say we lost him for nothing are flat out wrong. With every closed door there is another open one right next to it.

Go Angels!

by Four Ts on Oct 7, 2008 3:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Teixeira was a 1st round pick out of college

and that shit about him being a late pick back out of HS is way off. He was a legit 1st round pick but his demands out of HS by his asshole agent Boras dropped him into the late rounds (9th Round) were the Red Sox took a chance on him.

Peavy was a well know pitcher in AL and had a scholarship offer signed for Auburn University. He was given good money to sign that year. Much more then what a 15rd guy would get. If I remember right he got like 3 round money and scholarship money as well.

Don’t get me wrong there is talent out there but those type players mentioned above are not growing on trees.

Teix says that the Red Sox went around saying that he wasn’t going to sign, which dropped him to the late rounds, which is why he didn’t sign.

If GA wasn't so Lazy, I'd have something clever here.

by TheTypingFiend on Oct 7, 2008 8:39 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Boras is the one that went around

saying he would not sign unless he got a big league contract and a boat load of money. I saw him play as a High School player in a easter tournament in Copertino, and later saw him in the Cape COd league. Guy could play and had huge power. Hit a home run from both sides of the plate in that tournament while playing against Sean Burroughs the next day I saw CC Sabathia pitch in Vallejo. Mark Teixeira was a 1st round pick out of High School! Red Sox had nothing to do with him sliding into the 9th rd. That was Boras all the way and Boras will strike again I am sure

but guys sliding and being selected way later than their talent level happens all the time

more than half the guys who are top talent are not selected until late due to signing concerns — whether that be simply too high of a contract (boras) or because of potentially going to college. That is the norm for the draft. Which is why you can still get great talent late if and only if you are willing to pay the price ($$$).

So my point is these great players will be available to us with the extra picks we get from losing Tex. It is not like the NBA where the only way to get top guys are picking early. You can get future superstars and impact players if you scout correctly and are willing to pay the money.

Go Angels!

by Four Ts on Oct 8, 2008 9:43 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Draft money has changed a little

Your right the rich teams stayed rich because of these draft picks demands. @ years ago the MLB offices laid out slot money for each pick. This was to keep the $$$ down and it really worked. This year not so much.

Not true that more then half the top talent is selected until late. Some slide because of college commitment and concerns. Hell, everyone thought the the Twins would take Prior and he was the highest ranked player in the draft that year, but the Twins didn’t want to deal with his contract demands especially after he had turned down just over a million out of HS to attend Vandy for his Fresh yr(Cubs $ didn’t care) and elected to take future 2x batting champ Joe Mauer who was a two sport star heading to Fld St. to play QB and catch.

Thanks

for putting the quotes in one place for discussion. I was thinking the same thing as you when I read them in the paper. As much as I would dearly love to see Tex come back, it just isn’t going to happen. I don’t know how much Boras is going to be able to get for Tex, but I think we can use Todd Helton’s 9 year, $141.5 million and Giambi’s 7 year, $120 million dollar deals as benchmarks. I can actually see Tex getting an eight year, $160 million deal (two years and $115 million less than ARod), if not more, and I just don’t think our front office will be willing to risk a contract of that magnitude on one player, though they could probably afford it and probably should. We weren’t willing to risk $119 million on Carlos Beltran, who might even be more valuable than Tex. Our problem is we overpay for the middle level players like Hunter and the lower middle like GMJ – we’re paying that combo $140 million, or $21 million more than Beltran. But this may all be academic anyway because it does seem Tex wants to go back to the East Coast, and the Yankees will be able to offer him an opportunity to win every year and more money than anyone else.

Win every year

like this year?

by teopeht on Oct 8, 2008 8:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He Wants Money! Show him the Money and he's an Angel. Simple as that.

Most players will take the most money offered. If the Angels offer the Most, he stays.
Yah we sucked this postseason, but remember it was his first chance in what? 7 years? and he is no fool to realize how weak the division will be next year and probably beyond, its the Angels for the taking. Which means he has a great shot again next year, and odds are we won’t be facing the Sux in the first round. If we give him the money, what’s not to like?

by Big Bad , "VLAD"! on Oct 8, 2008 2:03 PM PDT   0 recs

I had a thought...

Is Teixeira worth whatever he’ll get when all he’s in it for is all he can get? What I mean is, wouldn’t it be better to have a player who cared about other things beside money? I have none so I wouldn’t know, but what’s the difference between $18M and $20M (besides the obvious $2M) when you’re going to make over $100M in your career. Don’t get me wrong, I think Teix is a great player, and would love for him to return, but the attitude of “whoever pays me the most, gets me” is a turn-off.

Call me naive.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

by WiHaloFan on Oct 8, 2008 6:40 PM PDT   0 recs

A hired gun will still play ball

if his doing well means he gets more money. Even if its not a heartwarming story for a Disney movie, I think he still puts the effort in.
