And the rumors start flying...
Our season officially ended last night, and already today, there are 2 rumors floating around about us acquiring young power hitters.
According to MLBTraderumors.com and the LA Times (which are usually not too bad), the Angels a rumored to be possibly landing spots for trade-candidates Prince Fielder and Dan Uggla. Fielder would be an obvious back-up in case Tex can't be re-signed, and Uggla would presumably play third (unless Howie is traded, is my guess).
So, what do you guys think? Are either of these guys good targets for the Halos? Should they target somebody else for a trade?
Discuss!

no trades please
unless we can pull something off like the tex trade where we give away a good player at the position of the incoming player and another throw-in prospect.

Uggla had a career year, no?
Seems like something one of our two immediate former GMs might have pulled off (Bavasi more likely than Stoneman, but still), but I don’t see Reagins falling for that. ESPECIALLY after what the Marlins tried to get from us for Cabrera last offseason.
Fielder’s an interesting choice, though—I still say resign Tex, NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES.
PLEASE, Tony.

i wouldn't say a career year
he’s been fairly consistent throughout. as much as i love naps, i think it’d be like having another one of him in the lineup with more strikeouts. not exactly what this club needs.

trades are tough
I want the draft picks if we lose our big guys (ie not sign major free agents) but thatd be counterintuitive to then trade our good prospects we already have for these guys.

4 good young players
I haven’t heard anyone mention this, but if we lose U-Haul and K-Rod, I think we get 4 more picks in the 1st and supplemental round. Let’s restock the system for the next decade eh?

If
they are offered arbitraition or signed before the ard deadline, then yes the Angels would receive draft pick consideration from MLB. They would receive an additional pick in the supplemantal round as well as a first round or additional supplemental round pick from the signing club. The determination is made by the position of the signing team, and the value of the FA that team signs. If the signing team is in the top 15, then the pick becomes suplemantal. If the signing team signs a more valuable FA (according to Elias,) the pick moves down.

No to both
Fielder is way out of shape and was sapped of a lot of his power this year. Also, Uggla strikes out a TON and pulled a Howie Kendrick in the All-Star game this year and never mentally recovered and it affected him the rest of the season.

No, god dammit
We either sign Tex or we don’t sign anybody. We need draft picks. We’ll still compete in ‘09, and by the time the A’s are supposedly good in 2010, we’ll have some prospects to start trotting onto the field in Salt Lake and Anaheim.

Agree
Everyone knows that resigning Tex (or pulling off some miracle trade to get a player to build around) and making him the centerpiece of the offense is the key for the Angels if they want to get beyond winning the AL West and being eliminated in the first round. If they don’t sign him, they can either continue on their path of 1st round playoff defeats by resigning players like GA and Frankie and making panic moves and overpaying for the likes of Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell just to say they made a move (see Gary Matthews) or they can try and stock up on draft picks and see what Wood, S-Rod, Jepson, K Mo or anyone that is ready from the minors can do during a full season of baseball.
If Lackey dislikes this “rebuilding” scenario and doesn’t want to stay beyond 2009 (assuming the Angels pick up his option), then you may be forced into trading him just to get something back which I hope isn’t the case.
This offseason will be very interesting.

I agree with you
Dump all money you can to get Tex if possible. Nobody else though. Draft and build that farm up. We should still be good next year with what we have in this division. Texas, Choak and Seachiro going nowhere no matter what they do.

Uggla
The dude can hit, yea he strikes out a lot but he can hit. It was the national league too, but over figgins I would take him. I do not know who we’d give up. possibly adenhart and another player. Def. no to Prince to fat and a bad clubhouse guy.

wouldn't mind seeing
aybar and adenhart to minnesota for liriano. maybe that’s a fantasy armchair proposal, but I think it works for both teams. throw in willits, and I’d take on Peavy’s salary.

Plus
Peavy’s salary is nothing compared to what CC wants and Peavy is I think a better arm to go after than Sabathia. A lot less wear and tear.

Peavy had some arm issues this year
for the first time, and in the year 2010 his contract starts to rise dramatically with a 3yr / $52m contract. Like Peavy a lot just not sure that 6’1 frame is holding up.

i dont see why either the twins or padres would make those trades
willits doesnt have any value any more, aybar has shown himself to be just another defensive short stop and adenhart’s value is down.
brandon wood or trumbo would be involved in both of those trade scenarios, if not more

no?
the pads are clearly fed up with greene and can move him elsewhere (STL? DET?), and aybar and willits would do well with bud’s style. we take on peavy’s salary (with all the money coming off the books this winter), and adenhart learns in a spacious field under a reuilding team. I never said it was plausible, only that it works for both teams, positionally.
same with the twins. aybar is much better than what they currently have at SS.

A Trade Will Happen
at some point in the offseason. The Angels will not go into Opening Day with six players (Figgins, Aybar, Izturis, Wood, Kendrick, Rodriguez) for three positions, plus a pair of backups.

Here's my two cents...
1. Sign Teixeira.
2. Trade Figgins for a starting pitcher. Someone like Washington’s John Lannan for example…young, cheap, potential. Would probably have to add some cash since Figgins will most likely get a raise in arbitration. Brandon Wood plays 3B.
3. Trade Aybar for a good set-up guy, preferably left handed.
4. If Teix can’t be signed, sign Rafael Furcal if cheap enough ($13M-$15M) to bat lead-off, but for no more than 2 years (doubt he’d do that, but who knows)
I like Izturis, maybe even more than I like Kendrick because he has better knowledge of the strike zone. So I’d also see about dealing Kendrick…but only if the deal was “over-whelming”.

Also, I'd take a chance on Rocco Baldelli...
to play LF if the price is right (come on down!) I know, I know, he’s always hurt, but if (big if) he can stay healthy I think he’d be a great addition.
How lame is it to reply to your own post??

he suffers from some sort of chronic fatigue issue that saps him of his energy and strength making him a tough guy to play everyday.

A 3rd baseman who can't get on base at high enough clip to make up for lack of slugging and poor sb %
.685 ops
60 walks v. 80 strikeouts
decent on base percentage, but stolen base success rate of 70 %
I’ve always thought with Figgins starting at anywhere other than 2b, the team would struggle on offense.

Not Uggla
He is worse defensively than Kendrick and we all saw how much that effed us this post season. I say get Holliday. He is a great young hitter and could be the heir to Valddy whenever he is on the outs.

But
defense can be taught, hitting well that is something a lot harder to figure out. And when you can hit 32 HR’s and drive in a 100 runs i’d take it for a lack of defense. plus, if you put him at third it not as much a liability as 2nd. And Holliday is expecting big money after this year so we’d be stuck in another money situation at least uggla is cheap for now.

Yes but....
In a playoff scenario defense and pitching will always win. 32 Homeruns dont help in the playoffs. Look at Kendrick in the playoffs, up until the last game of the series Howie did nothing but play crappy defense that led to Red Sox runs. If you put a good defensive player at second there is a better chance of those runs not scoring.
I like homeruns and rbis too but its they dont help when your defense just keeps giving up the lead.

Damn it GMJ!!!!!!!
I read all of these good trade/FA scenarios and can’t help thinking about how just how much balls Jr’s contract sucks. Torii’s deal was to make up for it, probably no Holliday because of it, and perhaps not enough left over to give Tex what he wants.
