What to do in a Dodgers/Sox series?

OK.  Let's imagine here for a second, and say that the worst case scenario just happened.

Let's pretend that the Dodgers beat the Phils and the Sux beat the Rays.  Yeah, I know, Joe Maddon won't let that happen, but we're pretending here, remember?

The question becomes, who, if anyone, do you root for?

I can't imagine EVER rooting for the Red Sux.  So do I go for the lesser of the two evils and pull for the Dodgers to win, even though that means we get stuck with a year of local media blue blowjobs?

Or do I say screw it, and to hell with both of them?  Yeah, it's "Alien vs. Predator" -- Whoever wins, we lose.

Oh, and Rays over Philly in 6.

I do root for NY over BOS and it KILLS me.

The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

2004 was the last time I rooted for Boston.

Though they beat us, they came back against the Evil Empire after falling 0-3. At that point the Yanks were my most hated team.

That all changed after Boston won the WS…

Eff Boston. I’ll root for any one playing them. Plus I like Joe Torre.

I have no problem with them. Yeah there’s a local rivalry, but that’s a creation of Selig’s interleague play. Doesn’t bother me.

This is one of the many reasons why I would never root for the Dodgers

Taken from an SI.com article today

“Are you telling me that we actually put the Angels out front?” asked Simers. “It must have been a mistake. What’s happening? One of our editors maybe moved to Orange County. It’s a Dodger town. I’m sorry. That’s just the way it is. The Lakers will be out front in some cases and they’re not even playing regular-season games yet. Hats off to the Angels, but they’re just not L.A.’s team.”

Im hoping for a phils sweep over the Doyers and Rays sweep over the Sux so

we can watch the lowest watched world series in history and then see how many people we here talkin crap about the angels. And so we can hear all the little bostonian bean bags whine and cry same with the dodgers.

"Throw some CHED!"

by angelskid2210 on Oct 8, 2008 3:47 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually

The Red Sox winning the world series will only make the team more hated by everyone else, it will distance the fan base from the historical position of being lovable losers and it will allow a piling on the bandwagon from the pink hat contingent that will further water down the specialness that being a Red Sox fan once held.

All the Raiders fans seem to have gravitated towards the Dodgers

Though Matt Kemp calls the Dodger fans “the best”, they have a large group of “fans” that mainly go to Ghetto Ravine just to cause trouble and get into fights. Though not all Dodgers fans are like this, a big chunk of them are extremely haughty and are at about the same level as Red Sox and Yankee fans.

Dodgers vs Red Sox

As an Angels AND Dodgers fan I will root for the Dodgers if they reach the World Series. If there was to be a Freeway Series I would root for the Angels to win it in seven games. As the Red Sox have a habit of sweeping the World Series in the 21st century I would hope that the Dodgers would win one game to force a Game 5.

After the Dodgers eliminated the Cubs to advance to the NLCS I went out and purchased Dodger World Series tickets on Stubhub. If the Dodgers indeed play three World Series games at home I will spend more money on 2008 Dodger post season tickets than I did for 2008 Angel season tickets. My eldest son Rick saw the Angels play three World Series games (2, 6, and 7) in 2002 at the age of 9. Here’s hoping my youngest son Roger gets to see three World Series games in 2008 at the age of 8. For the record I saw one World Series game at the age of 11 (the 4th game of the Dodgers sweep of the Yankees in 1963).

Which, just typing it, makes me feel like I need to go take a Crying Game shower. Or flagellate myself like an Silas the Albino.

But, there would be a really special, if sick, poetic justice if Manchild Ramirez got to stick it to them like that…

And then signed with the Yankees next year. Which won’t end up making a difference for us anyway.

My brother is always bumbed out when they dont make the Playoffs, but he ROOTS for the Angels as if he were an Angels fan. I feel like I owe him one. OF course I will drink a couple beers, take a deep breath and pull for them to win starting tomorrow…….It would get interesting if the Rays play the Doyers in the WS. I have rooted for them for a while, and now with Joe, they are a darn good team. I would probably have to sit back and enjoy the series, would be alright with any of the two winning but will be leaning more towards the Rays (wont tell my brother of course).

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo.

From July 30th to August 7th Roger and I went on a road trip to Missouri. We flew round trip from John Wayne Airport to Kansas City because an open jaws ticket (SNA to KC and STL to SNA) would have doubled our rental car bill (dropping the car off at an airport different than the one we picked it up at). Upon arrival in KC we immediately drove to Hannibal and stayed at the Clemens Hotel. The next day we toured Samuel Clemens’ house, took a river steamboat ride on the Mississippi River to see Jackson Island, and explored the Mark Twain Cave.

The next day we drove to St. Louis. Flooding of a tributary river south of Hannibal necessitated a one hour delay and a return to Hannibal before driving southwest on a four lane highway. As a result we checked into our hotel in St. Louis less than two hours before the Friday game time. We saw the Phillies take two of three from the Cardinals. The highlight was Ryan Ludwick blasting four home runs in the three games. This was my fourth time to St. Louis but the first time that I went to the top of the Arch.

In Kansas City we saw the Red Sox take two of three from the Royals. In the August 5th game Jason Bay hit a deep fly to leftcenter that Royal centerfielder Mitch Maier gloved at the top of the fence. The ball rolled off of Maier’s glove along the top of the fence for about eight feet before leftfielder Ross Gload barehanded the ball into his glove and threw to second base to hold Bay to a double. That was the closest I had seen Bay come to hitting a home run before Games 1 and 2 of last week’s Red Sox vs Angels ALDS. We enjoyed visiting the Negro Baseball Leagues museum and the Jazz museum in Kansas City. They are in the same building about five blocks northwest of the old Muncipal Stadium where I saw Boog Powell hit a home run into Brooklyn Avenue in July 1972.

I find it ironic that Roger and I will see the Red Sox and Phillies play in post season games the same year we went on a road trip to see them play. I thought we might see one of them play in the post season, not both.

This year I the Angels were 32-16 in games I went to. The Dodgers were 11-5. I enjoyed reading Roger Angel’s books about games he went to across the nation. My hobby is collecting baseball stadiums. Colorado, Florida, and Texas are the only franchises that I have not seen play a home game. I have not seen the Washington Nationals play at home but I did see the Expos sweep four games against the Reds in Montreal in 1989 (that was my last Pete Rose sighting). For the record—no, Roger was not named after Roger Angel.

I last saw the Dodgers play in a World Series thirty years ago. In 1978 I went to games 1, 2, and 6 of the World Series. I am looking forward to the renewal of the Dodgers and Phillies post season rivalry. The Dodgers sport a 2-1 series lead—winning in 1977 and 1978 and losing in 1983. The 1950 Whiz Kids don’t count. The Phillies that year advanced to the World Series with a win over the Dodgers in the last regular season game.

At the hotel pool in St. Louis I spoke with a Phillies fan. He was so happy that the Mets had blown a 7 game lead with 17 games to play in 2007 to get the Phillies into the post season. That lessened the injury of the 1964 Phillies collapse when they were up by 6 1/2 games with 12 to play. I mentioned that I had seen the Phillies sweep a doubleheader from the Pirates at Veterans Stadium on August 4th, 1974 with Willie Stargell and Ollie Brown homering in the opener and Mike Schmidt hitting a home run and double in the nightcap. The Phillies fan emphatically corrected me and stated that twinbill was played on July 27th, 1974. He was sure because those were the first major league baseball games he ever went to. I reserve the right to be wrong. I looked it up on BaseballReference.com and he indeed was correct.

My wife and I decided a couple of years ago that we were going tovisit every MLB stadium.

So far, we have gone to Petco, Pac Bell, MacAfee Coliseum, Coors Field, Banc One, Shea & Yankee Stadium (earlier this year), and Fenway (last year). It almost goes without saying that we have also been to Anaheim and Dodger Stadium.
Next year, we will be going to Chicago, and maybe another stadium in the region (Milwaukee, Toronto, Detroit). My favorite stadiums so far are Pac Bell (for a new stadium) and Fenway for a “vintage” stadium.
I just love visiting the different ballparks. It is a real treat to visit the various cities and stadiums, and to talk with the locals. I hope you make it soon to Colorado, Florida, and Texas.

I am very fortunate to have a wife that loves sports. Well, for the most part...

…I thought she was going to throw a brick through the TV when Frankie gave up the HR to Drew (she thought Drew was classless with the way he left the Dodgers…no love there).

Also, she is more of a football nut than me…passionate and completely irrational hatred for USC.

Anyway, the stadium thing has been really great. One tip…if you want to meet the locals (we love it) stay at a B & B instead of hotels/motels. It is more of an adventure, but generally well worth the experience. Your time will come…

The game we attended at Yankee Stadium was on a Monday at 7:00 PM.

We wanted to get there early to walk around the stadium and monument park. So we were there with about a million New Yorkers trying to catch the subway at 5:00 PM.
It took 3 tries to get an the subway…a little too shy the first 2 tries. We were packed in so tight that there was no possible way to fall over. Somehow, more people crammed in at every stop. All I thought about was holding on to my wallet. Then it appeared to one of the Bronx faithful that we didn’t look like locals, so he started talking away. He was kind of the typical NY smart-ass, but not too bad. I was happy when we finally got off the subway!

My first trip

I took the man that introduced me to this game that I love my father. He was so pumped with everything. The job allowed me to park in the players parking lot and when we pulled in we parked next to Al Trautwig and as we got out David Cone pulled in. We talked and had a nice little conversation as we walked into the Stadium.

Being it was a 7pm game and it was 3pm we had a chance to walk the stadium and the monuments all by ourself. We sat and watched both teams go threw there BP sessions. Dad still talks about that trip that also included Fenway and the HOF.

General curiosity.

It is a weird habit of mine to try and put myself in the place of others and imagine what it was like through their eyes. Age tends to affect the mind’s image. My guess is there would have been a greater “Wow” factor seeing David Cone if you were 12 years old rather than 27. That’s all.

I know what you mean by that. My job had me traveling all the time and collecting frequent flier miles and Marriott Reward Points daily. So I decided that I would take the old man to NY, Bos and the Hall.

Every MLB stadium..

I’m working on that one, myself, LOL. Yesterday, I took a look at the 09 schedule and tried to figure out where I wanted to go next year.

Leaning towards Detroit(just cause I haven’t been to the NEW stadium), Cleveland, KC, or Tampa.. They’re all pretty much cheaper than going to NYC this year to Yankee Stadium..

We went to NY this year, and both NY teams will have new stadiums next year.

So some time in the future, we will be going back. You are right though…it is an expensive city to visit.
For all the hoopla this year, I thought Yankee Stadium was a real disappointment. The only think that made it unique was monument park. Otherwise, it had no charm, and not nearly enough public facilities.

Wednesday afternoon September 17th, 2008

Christmas came early this year! On the afternoon of 9/17/08 (the 41st anniversary of Reggie Jackson’s first home run and the 24th anniversary of Reggie Jackson’s 500th home run—I was at the Big A for both) MLB released the 2009 schedules for all 30 major league teams.

In seasons past the next year schedules would dribble out one or two at a time beginning around the Fall Equinox (9/21) and ending the first week of November. In 2007 the Diamondbacks released their 2008 schedule on or about the Fall Equinox. The Dodgers followed 3 or 4 days later. In late October 2004 I was in Kulu/Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India at a slow connection internet cafe trying to discern the Angels 2005 schedule (which was not released yet) by looking at other A.L. West team’s 2005 schedules one month at a time. The best correlation for the Angels schedule was the Texas Rangers schedule. That I was in India the same month that the Angels and Dodgers were both participating in the post season was a spontaneous decision. As soon as both were eliminated in their respective divison series I purchased a round trip ticket LAX-BKK-DEL-BKK-LAX on Thai International Airlines. From 1984 to 2004 I was in India every USA presidential election year. Sadly that streak is ending this year.

The first high priority 2009 series that jumped out at me was the April 10-12 weekend Red Sox @ Angels series. I did not like that at first because Roger has April 4-12 week as a spring break. I quickly found the perfect match for Monday thru Thursday April 6-9. On April 6 and 7 the Cubs will play in Houston. On April 8 and 9 the Indians play at Texas. The Thursday Clev @ Tex game is an afternoon game. That will allow us to fly back to John Wayne Airport on Thursday night with all three Bosox @ Angels games on deck.

From June 16th to July 1st, 2009 we are considering going farther afield. There is a 15 game stretch over 16 days in Philadelphia, Washington, and Baltimore. The one day off conveniently can be spent at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. Here is the whole shebang:

June 16, 17, 18 Toronto @ Philadelphia
June 19, 20, 21 Baltimore @ Philadelphia
June 23, 24, 25 Boston @ Washington
June 26, 27, 28 Washington @ Baltimore
June 29, 30 July 1 Boston @ Baltimore

We would probably miss the first Blue Jays @ Phillies game. That would shorten it to a 14 game road trip. I do not mind staying at the same hotel as Red Sox fans. We did so this August in Kansas City. Saying you hate the Yankees is a great ice breaker with a Red Sox fan! A Bosox fan from Idaho responded to that by buying me a Jack Daniels shaken on the rocks and poured into a glass without the ice at the hotel bar.

From August 7-13 we may go to Denver to see the Rockies play seven games. On August 7-10 the Cubs play four games at Colorado. From August 11-13 the Pirates will play three games in Colorado.

Those road trips would cross Colorado, Texas, and Washington off my to do list. That would leave Florida for a future year—most likely an early April spring break.

I would normally listen to what a woman says is foreplay

but the last time I did she said pit bull and chain link fence and Chinese Finger trap and that wasn’t so fun.

That's your response?

I thought you were going to come back with more than that!

Oh well…I guess I will have to go try and incite a riot on some other post.

sorry, no riot here. Only love, peace & marshmallows!

Dodgers

… hate the Sux but only have mild dislike for the Dodgers

What to do in a Dodgers/Sox series?

Hook up jumper cables to your car and your balls and have your buddy, who is a Sox fan, turn the car off and on for the length of an entire game, all while your other buddy, a Dodgers fan, takes his lighter and sets your eyebrows on fire, then your nose hair, then your chest hair, etc. etc.

That or just boycott the Series.

If the Red Sox and Dodgers play for the World Series, I will not watch a single minute of a single game.

The one advantage of living on this side of the pond...

…is that I won’t have to deal with all the nauseating hype surrounding these two teams. I expect TB to infect the BoSox and put them down (the way we should have done). I’d like to think that the Phillies have too much for the Dodgers to handle. But, it never quite works out that way does it.

I’ll prepare for a Dodgers / Red Sox series and be delighted it we get anything better…

I think I’d like the Philles to win.

I see red people

I see what you did there, hah "infect"

Thank you everyone, The Limey will be at the Irvine Improv on Friday and Saturday. 2 Euro beers on tap 4 Euro cocktails. Don’t forget to tip the waitresses!

I'm a fan of the American League

So… I gotta root for either the Sox or the Rays, whichever team makes it to the World Series. Since the Sox had the skill to take down the Halos… I’ll route for the Red Sox and take solace in the fact that we lost to the (eventual) best team in baseball.

by nothingbettertodo on Oct 9, 2008 9:58 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OUCH

On the ladder of teams to root for the Red Sox will always be at the very bottom. I’d rather root for the Commies or the end of the world than the BoSux. My love for the AL is trumped by my hatred of Boston. Whoever Boston plays against I’m rooting for.

GO RAYS

And I dont understand how you could take solace in losing, I never can. Especially not to them.

by Skizoss25 on Oct 10, 2008 11:35 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

if any other AL team represents in the WS

besides the sux, i’m pulling for them. the dodgers are in, no question. if they get boston, i have to pull for LAD. i just hate boston that much. for the lakers, for the angels….boston just needs to be beaten.

and i do have an appreciation for the baseball talents of ManRam, even with posing after hitting bombs off frankie…how much $ would Arte throw at Man Ram if Tex doesn’t happen?

by SCHalo on Oct 9, 2008 12:16 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dunno if Manny fits our clubs philosophy.

I’d rather throw a couple extra million at Teix than pick up Manny (regardless of his insane hitting).

I root Dodgers

I like Manny

I despise the Sox

The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

rooting for Phillies

he was drafted out of high school by the Dodger and gave them the big “screw you” by going to UCLA instead…

Conflicted

I kinda like the Dodgers this year, with the new life they’ve got—but that life didn’t come from Torre, necessarily, so much as it did from Manny. So…

On the other hand, my sister went to school in Philly and my sister-in-law’s a big Phillies fan. As in HUGE. So the family-inclination would be to root for them. Something about the Phillies I just don’t like as much, though…

Dodgers

for two reasons:

1. I HATE the Bo Sox.
2. Torre winning would just rub it into the Yankees, whom I also HATE

GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can

Dodgers

I do hate los doyers but…

I feel like I have been kicked in the stomach by the Sox. Then they stole my girlfriend and gave her herpes. Then she got back with me and gave me herpes.

So yeah I feel like I got kicked in the stomach and given herpes by a third party from the Sox.

so F them.

PS

Can you tell I am bitter and havent been talking about it to anyone yet?

by Skizoss25 on Oct 10, 2008 11:37 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'll take the sox.

gotta respect them for cutting manny loose. it took some serious balls to drop that axe. finally, someone had the backbone to stand up to boras and a primadonna superstar. for that alone they’re a feel good story that’s good for baseball. i understand why most of us are so bitter with the sox (stomping halo postseason dreams into a mudhole for 2+ decades), but they have a pretty good group of guys on their squad.

all this hate for the red sox is rather stalkerish. the “sux” thing is childish and getting tired. you don’t see sox fans calling us “gayngles”. hell, from trolling their boards, they don’t bother talking about us at all. maybe we should just try and beat them once in a while and we won’t have to resort to schoolyard insults.

How is Gary Disarcina not in the Halo of Fame?

by Clutch_&_Scoop on Oct 10, 2008 1:45 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Relax

Most of us don’t mean anything personal. We are just having fun. Besides the Boston fans are hands down much more insulting and immature (arguably the most insulting and immature in baseball) than the Angels fans which is evident anytime you attend a Red Sox-Angels game at the Big A.
