Free Agent Infielders
Following are the available free agent infielders who are even worth considering.
Catchers - We don’t need a catcher
1B
Mark Teixeira (29)
2B
Mark Ellis (32)
Orlando Hudson (31)
Felipe Lopez (29)
SS - We don’t need a shortstop
3B
Maybe* Hank Blalock (28) (* $6mil club option)
Joe Crede (31)
If Figgy and or Howie were traded for prospects, a signing of one any one of the 2B or 3B here would make sense. It is Teix or Kendry at 1B here in '09.

About Tex and the money
Hey everyone, Angels fan since my youth living out in NJ (near Philly). Have loved reading this blog.
As far as Tex, I read someone mention it would cost approx a quarter of a billion dollars(!) to sign him. However, consider this: what will $25/30mil per year look like in 5 years? It could be considered not so unreasonable.
I for one want to see Tex resigned, let Wood start at 3B (it’s time), and give Morales the DH role.

i do not see that in this economy
I see him getting 21 million for 7 or 8 years. We shall see, but things have deteriorated to the point that many potential bidders are going to be facing a cash crunch, which in turn will lessen the bidding. Additionally a LOT of teams will eb looking to quietly unload expensive contracts for prospects to free up cash flow.

That's about what I expect
Maybe as high as $22 million (which just so happens to be the combined amount Garland and K-Rod were making this year…hmmmmm).
If that’s what it takes, get the man a pen and a piece of paper. Let’s do it.

You're opinion?
What is your opinion on this? You’re asking the questions but not pitching your two cents. I’m interested and I’m sure many of us else are.
Try and resign Tex or what?
GA?
Frankie?

I am guessing that the contract signed by M. Cabrera will be used as the bench mark
M. Cabrera (25 yr) signed 8 years/$152.3M
08:$11.3M, 09:$15M, 10:$20M, 11:$20M, 12:$21M, 13:$21M, 14:$22M, 15:$22M
Tex is going to be a 29 yr old in 2009. He is giving up a few years, but I see this as the mark he attempts to jump.

This may be the benchmark
But I have no doubt Tex will get more. Tex is a MUCH better defender and is generally considered to have a better work ethic/attitude. I’m thinking Tex has a better chance to be good well into his thirties while I wouldn’t be surprised if Cabrera was done by age 31 with the way he doesn’t take care of himself.

Sign Tex. The future of the organization depends on it.
As for the others on the listed above, forget it. Free agent dollars should only be spent on premium players.

I'm crossing my fingers on the signing of Teixeira
I heard a rumor if the Angels don’t land Teixeira then their’s a possibility of Dan Uggla

You're kidding, right?
The absolute last thing the Angels need is a sixth shortstop (Aybar, Izturis, Wood, Rodriguez, Figgins). That’s why they traded Cabrera in the first place. There are few defenders better than Aybar, and we can expect his offense to improve a bit. Either he or Izturis can be league average with the bat. Wood could be better than that, in terms of power.
Adding a sixth shortstop would be sheer lunacy.

fragile hammies. no power. only fair at D. clearly not yet ready for prime time pressure. lousy at selling plasmas.

I would take HK over Aybar
We just can’t have both in the lineup playing everyday since they both give up too much on OBP and SLG. It’s either one or the other. Wood needs to be given a shot somewhere, put Aybar on the bench, and give HK one more chance.

I'm not worried about Howie's OBP
If he can stay healthy for a full season (which is what I am worried about), a lot of people expect he can hit .325 or .330, which puts his OBP in the .350 – .360 range, not at all bad for a 2B man.
Aybar on the other hand…

TEX
is a no brainer.
I guess O-Dawg could make sense if Howie were traded but I heard that he might be used to acquire Dan Uggla in as a consolation for Tex and they’d put Uggla at third and move Figgy to LF to replace GA. Screw Felipe Lopez and Mark Ellis though. I’d rather keep Howie and hope he can finally have a breakthrough season in which he stays healthy.
As for 3B….we’re fine with Figgy. Blalock is physically incapable of playing 3B anymore since Texas has been using him at 1st and Chris Davis at 3rd. Joe Crede is another mediocre injury prone guy.

Pedro Feliz 3b
Sign him on the cheap, move Figgy to the outfield.
Hits 20-30HR a year. BA isn’t much to think about but comparable to what Figgy produces.
Later in the year sign somebody else or maybe move a player up from the minors.
Would in the end make a good player to come off the bench. Our biggest problem in the past post seasons IMHO.

Again, no Feliz
OBP = CRAPTACULAR
Lifetime OBP of .290. Wow. His OPS was .704 last season playing in what might be the best hitter’s park other than Coors Field. I don’t care how good his defense is, this guy would be in my nightmares.

And if he ends up sucking we can all whine together. But I just don’t see that happening. Nor do I see him turning into a “A-Rod” eithier.

Morales is good but...
not Tex. Could he be Tex? I dunno, I don’t think so though. Tex is a good replacement for an aging Vlad. I don’t really seem him re-signing since he is a east coaster and probably has more doubts about us being a WS contender after our early exit but I think between all our free agents…TEX should be a priority.

Morales WILL bat .310+ in a FULL SEASON
with 25+ Home Runs………….NO DOUBT.
If you dont belive me look at Alexi Ramirez from the White Sox. Thats with NO Experience, Imagine what Cubas BEST player will do.
I think we should sign Dayan Viciedo, He plays IF and is a 3rd Base Man. He is young and is the BIGGEST thing since Morales Left Cuba. That is of course if he becomes a free agent. If not we SHOULD DRAFT HIM!!!!!
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just throwing this out there
Got to sign Tex. I think we should at least consider signing Rafael Furcal (good lead-off, speed, defense) if not give Izturis the SS job full-time, trade Aybar and make Sean Rodriguez the backup.
Now I know this is kind of going away from the subject but if K-Rod leaves to you guys think that it is possible and would you do it, to package Figgy and someone else for Bobby Jenks, or should we just stick with going with Arredondo/Shields?

Blalock is done at third
because of his sholder problems he will be a first baseman from here on out. If the Angels can’t sign Tex, would he he an option for first or would he give us no more production than Kendrey?
I am a fair weather fan so the Angels better win!
