Make him an offer
22 mil/yr 6 years. Of course he will turn it down and sign with the the yanks for 26 mil per year for 8 years.
So why worry about it?

just thinking
about Tex playing for the damn Yankees makes me want to hurl….although, it will mean that the chowda’s will be getting spanked again on a regular basis…..
My only hope is that Tex finds that he really likes it here (you know, like we all do), and that he will settle for a little less money for sunshine pay (you know, like we all do).

Why?
What the hell do the Yankees have for a rotation, especially if Mussina retires? They’re old up the middle (Posada/Molina behind the dish, Jeter at short) and ineffective where they’re not old (Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano have both disappointed). It’ll be a while before they can fix that.

Use the money you save from buying out GA to put toward signing Teixeira to a deal. Sit down with Boras now, to find out how much it is going to take to resign him, and try and find a way to sign him without turning our payroll into a Yankees type of situation.

If I was Reagins, my first order of business
would be to ask Teixiera (NOT Boras) if he really wants to stay here.
Based on other comments I have seen posted here on HH, I have my doubts. So, no reasonable amount of money or length of contract will work…and Boras will just play teams against one another to drive up the final contract.

Tell him this is our #1 priority for the offseason, and that we're in a hurry
Try — hard with Scott Boras, to be sure — to create a sense of urgency, maybe offering a sweet deal (7/150 or something) in a 30-day window. The whole team’s construction changes wildly depending on whether he signs, so we need to know ASAP.
by mattwelch on Oct 9, 2008 6:58 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly right, priority #1
It seems reasonable given the Angels halfway decent relationship with Boras that when the time comes the Angels will make a first, last and best offer and get a relatively quick decision. If the answer is NO then priority #1 becomes, how do you replace that production? Everyone seems to be waving bye-bye to Garret so maybe two or three years of Manny are in order. We’d probably have to beat out an aggressive Dodger bid, but it would take some of the sting out of losing Tex…

Definitely agree.
If he says no, we may be in deep shit. I’m feeling more confident out the front office’s thinking because we traded for him, but I can’t help that lingering worry that they don’t recognize why he is so good. Do they recognize that patience is the key to his power production or do they just think “he’s got good pop in his bat?”

it looks like
we have around 37 mill to spend to keep the payroll where Arte wants it. We need to figure out what to do in LF one bulpen spot and one SP spot. We are already paying Kelvim, so here’s to hoping he can come back and be our closer (that way he is not throwing a lot of innings on a rebuilt arm)
By signing Tex a lot of pieces can fall into place, you can offer him 7-8 years at 21-22 a year, you can then offer GA 6-7 mil for 1 year plus an option year, give Lackey his 5 mil raise. that leaves anywhere from 3-5 mil left over for small time free agents that need to be signed or to retain Figgy with his raise whatever, the important piece is Texiera. IF he leaves Lackey has stated that offense is important in his re-uping decision. He might want to leave. We have the money (37 mil to play with)

To Arte Moreno:
I’m poor. Rabbit ears on a 27" TV poor. Poverty and unemployment kinda poor. I made it to three games this season, splurging to spend more money on my credit card just to see the Angels play. I took my two year/old to his first game this year. I’m so poor that I usually don’t buy anything at the stadium.
It seems the first obstacle we face in bringing Teix back is location. If we can get past that, throw everything you can into bringing him back, monetarily. My poorassness situation is improving, and with a Teix resign, I promise to spend all my hard earned pay on jersey’s, hats, and other merchandise by going to more games in ’09.
Thanks,

I couldn't agree more.
I loved everything about Teixera coming to the Angels. We got an All-Star First Basemen. His defense was better than advertised and his offense was what I expected. He added protection for Vlad and nearly made a murder’s row with Tex, Vlad, and Hunter. With more offense from No. 1 and No. 2 in the playoffs and TEX could have had a ton of RBIs.
However, can we afford to lock up $160 to $176 million over the next 8 years? That pretty much stops anymore signings, doesn’t it? I understand there will be a lot of freed up cash if we do not re-sign K-Rod and if we buy out Garret. When does Sarge Jr.‘s no trade clause expire… isn’t it 09? If it is I suspect we could package GMJ and Figgins and/or Izturis for some top AA talent.

Bite the Bullet, Arte...
It sucks, but the Angels have to beat any offer the Yankees make, I’d say up to $25 mill a year. This guy is a rarity, the ind of bat Vlad was when he first came, except with discipline and better health.
He may not be interested in playing for the Angels when he could be a new Yankee in a new Yankee Stadium, hitting in front of A-Rod (which in and of itself is ludicrous), but the Angels have to try their darndest. This kind of hitter is a rarity in today’s non-steroid game. Whatever it takes, guys.

to the Mark Teixeira salary fund. When the Angels are doing great we celebrate a drink up. If they stink it up, we drown our sorrows in beer and boo the hell out of Mark for making our beers so damn expensive while we watch the Halos ……well let’s not go there.

Not so sure going end around Tex will help
Tex has been with Boras since his senior year of HS (98). The relationship has made both very wealthy.
From what I understand Tex currently is living in AZ calling that home from his days as a Ranger (spring training complex). With the Angels making that their home as well for spring this might make the Angels a true front runner.
I truly believe that this is a huge priority with the organization. The only way the Angels even have a chance to sign a player like Tex is because he has now been with the team and seen the way things go. Kind of like the 90 day probation period, but in this case it was for both sides

I like Teix a lot.
If he wants to stay we should pay him what he wants. If he wants to go leave him but either way we’re gonna need more power hitters.

Git er done
There is no free agent out there who can lead the Angels to victory in so many ways. Yes Dunn, Burrell, and Ramirez can hit, but among the free agent hitters out there, Teixiera is the only one who can save runs on defense, the others should all be DH’s.

The Yankees
Do they actually WANT Tex? It seems to me that their first priority is CC Sabathia. And then maybe another big free agent pitcher. And then maybe K-Rod? Also, I would think that after Giambi they are wary of spending that much on a first baseman.
Also, wouldnt Tex at over 20mil per plus A-Rod, Giambi, and Jeter give the Yankees the four highest paid players in baseball?
Anyway, I think the Angels need to sign Tex more than CC. I think if you show Tex the money, then he will play anywhere. The Angels certainly arent going to get any kind of discount. Pay him. Then lets figure out how to beat the damn Sox in the postseason.
by ValisJason on Oct 9, 2008 2:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I had an exchange with Zu Long about K-Rod a few weeks ago.
Zu convinced me…serious doubts about K-Rod becomming a Yankee. Why?
His ego. Why would he want to be a back-up to Rivera for the next 2 years? He wants to save games, not hold games.
He has the single saves record. He likely wants the all time saves record. He is a young guy with many potential years in front of him (barring injury).
by sothball on Oct 9, 2008 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That Makes Perfect Sense
I am not assuming K-Rod to the Yankees. And if so, I was assuming that Rivera was done after this last year. But, with the great year he had, why wouldnt he want to continue? That definitely seems to take the Yankees out of the K-Rod transaction. At this point, I think K-Rod’s disastrous post-season will affect his market price. And, although I would like him back on the Angels, I dont think we should be paying 10mil plus for a closer.
But, the point still stands .. do the Yankees even want Tex? He is certainly not going to be their first priority. If the Angels make Tex the first priority, I believe they will have a very good chance to sign him.

Giambi and Abreu are coming off the books
I’m estimating this, but I think something like $60 – 70 million is coming off the Yankees books this year. It may even be more than that. Giambi, Abreu, Mussina (who is talking about retiring), Pettitte (who may be back), Pavano. I could see the Yankees trying to sink $45 – 50 million into CC and Teix in the offseason. Yeah, their first priority is CC, but Teix is their number 2, I guarantee it.

don't forget
that they won’t be paying the luxury tax next year, either. That saves them another $30 million or so. Plus increased revenue from the new stadium. All told, the Yankees might have close to $200 million to spend this offseason.

I like Tex too, but we had him and still lost!
What’s our plan for beating the Sux next post-season?
I agree, lets try and resign Tex. But we probably won’t have everyone back next year.
When we get our next post-season shot, we need some clutch hitting!
We left way too many runners on base by playing guys that didn’t contribute.
We need to resign the guys that produced (Tex, Figgins) and trade the guys that didn’t.
(I hear Orlando Cabrera is a free agent)

Wait...hold up...reality check.
I agree with most of everyone that Tex is a monster and that re-signing him would have positive effects on the Angels team. I love Tex and totally want to resign him. However, resigning him to an 8 year contract is craziness. That makes him 37 by the end of the contract. WTF? Do we want Tex COACHING first base for his last two years? To put things in perspective…Vlad’s hobbling ass will be 33 next year. Salmon retired at 38 with his last two years a bust. (Nothing against Timmy…he was just injured a bunch)
I have never been really all that clear on the terms of contracts but if we sign him to 8 years we need to have some sort of ability to opt out of the contract after 5.
Then again, I realize that eventually Tex would move to DH…and Eddie Murray (also a first basemen) crushed 22 home runs at the age of 40 as DH. But still…I think the option should be in there…(if such a thing exist).
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Oct 9, 2008 10:41 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
A few comments
yeah, there’s always some risk. Actually, the idea of an opt-out after 5 years might be appealing to Boras as well. A highly productive Teix could opt out and sign a new deal for market value, as I suspect that whatever he gets now will seem more reasonable in five years.
But thus far, Teixeira has not been injury prone. He plays a far less demanding defensive position than either Vlad or Salmon, and didn’t play the first seven or so years of his career on concrete, whereas Guerrero did.
You don’t need to be particularly mobile to play 1B. If he stays healthy, a 38 year old Teixeira probably wouldn’t be any less mobile than a 28-year old Kotchman.
by jjackflash on Oct 9, 2008 11:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's been very healthy
No major health problems so far. An 8 year contract would only take him through his age 36 season.
Also, you have to know that you almost always overpay for these contracts. You get what you pay for in the first 5 years, maybe a little bit more. Then in years 6 – 7 you don’t get quite what you’re paying for and in year 8 you might not get much at all. But in those first 5 years, you’re contending every year. That makes it worth it. Tex isn’t as good as Bagwell, but that’s kind of the same career arc I could foresee.
Some guys break down earlier than others, but first base lends itself well to preserving the body. If giving him an 8th year meant we could drop it down to $20 million a year, do it in a heartbeat. I’m really worried that Boras is going to start the bidding at $200 million though.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!

Best offer plus 10%
I say you go above what you even think would sign him. The Yankees are going to try and throw the entire franchise at him, so the only way the Halos get him is if you give him far more than you expect would sign him.

Sign him with some perks
Give him a 20% share of ownership of the Angels
Name the Big A after him (as suggested by someone above)
Build a stature of Teix in the main entrance by the hats.
Give him his own private jet to use as he likes (even if it means flying separate from the team on road trips)
Give him his own private locker room at the Big A (or big Teix)
Allow him the chance to opt out of his contract every 2 years to keep him motivated (in which case he gives up his 20% share of the Angels)
Finance a movie in which he is the star (film genre of his choice) or finance an album in which he can sing country or any other musical genre of his choice.
