A's Get Holliday?
...or at least according to MLBTR.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/as-acquire-matt.html
Are the A's really moving prospects to make room for a proven vet???
I am kinda shocked by the move.... maybe Beane trades him mid season for a new crop of prospects or something Oakland Athletics-ish like that.
Can't wait to see what our first move will be. All hail the ninja
UPDATE: ATHLETICS NATION
The details are still a little fuzzy, but it looks like the deal is for Greg Smith for sure and probably Carlos Gonzalez and Huston Street.

i just posted a fanshot of this

Kotch would've had that.

makes sense
they have a ton of new prospects and will get more when they trade street and whoever else.
Also, if theyre not competitive theyll just trade him again at the deadline
by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 10, 2008 11:43 AM PST 0 recs
How does this make sense?
They are not close to contending, and he is in a walk year. They sold off a lot of parts to restock their farm system and then they turn and around move a bunch of them for a Boras client who will test the market and said he wants to be in the playofffs every year?
I am at a loss.

Howie said it above
They make a run until the trade deadline, and either trade him off for more prospects or ride it out if they are competing.
It worked this year and they were very close to competitive just before the deadline.

dont discount the A's
they were definitely not bad last year at the outset and with holliday, cust, carlos gonzales….they will be competitve.
it also makes sense to get some buzz going for them…and if it doesnt work out theyll trade him to a contender in july for more prospects and recoup some of their value. I like it a lot from their perspective actually

I like it alot from our perspective too
Should make the ninja a little more active and help pry open Arte’s wallet. Bad for our pitching staff but should be a plus in getting more deals done.
We shall see.

Carlos Gonzalez
will probably be dealt to Colorado.
The good news for the Halos is that since their division rival landed a big bat, Arte might have more incentive to open up his wallet and give Tex the 200 million dollar contract he desires.

They were close last year
because they had overachieving players like Justin Douchebag and Chad Gaudin going strong for them…then they fell off the cliff as they should.
I’ll go ahead and discount them. Why? Because they have no rotation. Everyone worth a damn that helped them in the first half last year is gone. Duscherer is not going to do what he did last year, Gaudin is gone. Harden is gone. Blanton is gone. Relying on 5 rookies or second year guys to anchor your rotation, plus an extremely mediocre offense is a recipe for third place. Adding Holliday to the offense makes it marginally-above-average. The rotation still sucks.

agree
adding Holliday doesn’t do anything but add some offense. they traded away some good pitchers. all their talent is young. alot of you guys say you can’t rely on young talent. lets not go crazy, he’s a very good hitter but without a good rotation it means nothing.

Good gosh, what has the world come to. I’m a Holliday fan, but I’m hoping for a busted trade! Well, good for them. I hope this proves the need for Teixeira.

ESPN Radio said Brett Anderson and Greg Smith are part of the rumored deal.
I will be glad to see them move Anderson.

Good move for the A's
It’s a win all the way around. They have a ton of prospects and will probably pick up some more in other deals, so they’re dealing from strength. There’s a decent chance that Holliday could make them somewhat competitive, although he probably won’t take them past 80 – 83 wins. If they are competitive, they keep him and take the compensation picks after the season. If they aren’t competitive, they deal him to a contender, a la the Kotchman – Teix deal last season. He’s under a reasonable contract this year, so it’s not like they’re breaking the bank.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!

Why trade developing prospects for draft picks? (assuming Holliday goes to a team that loses a pick)

Who do they have to pitch now? Honestly.
Blanton, Harden, and Gaudin are gone. Duscherer isn’t going to repeat last year. The best candidates to fill the rotation voids are the same guys being shipped out in this deal. Who is going to pitch for them this year without a MASSIVE overhaul?
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Nov 10, 2008 12:56 PM PST 0 recs
I'm not concerned about Holiday with the A's
He’d scare me more if he went to Boston or NY.
by Ajax on Nov 10, 2008 1:29 PM PST 0 recs
What's to wait for?
They have a Texas-sized pitching problem now.

Great!
So all the players the A’s traded for last year when they gave up all their veterans, they are now trading for one year of matt holiday. I’m fine with this deal and I think we’ll still win the West this year, and maybe pick up Holliday in FA next year.
by ponusbaum43 on Nov 10, 2008 1:38 PM PST 0 recs
Good point...
and perhaps we pick him up as a FA after he has proven he can hit in the AL West. Important when you are talking big guaranteed contracts.

not exactly
street/smith are non factors
A’s wont miss them…giving up gonzalez hurts but they still have sweeney/unningham around. plus shown interest in crisp last week in cf
apparently they have a payroll boost which to 80mill..we’ll see if the spend that extra 30-40mill or not
they didnt touch their farm system in this trade
is it enough to contend right now…no. we’ll see if they spend the rest of the money or use more trade ammo

contenders? ha!
If you are counting in Sweeney, Crisp and Cunningham to make you contenders you are screwed. With no pitching and a horrible offense surrounding a good hitter who benefited greatly from playing in Denver— the A’s are destined for failure, again.

If the A's don't make any more moves, then I will be shocked
I expect them to go after Giambi and increase the payroll up to around 80 million after this move.
It will be very interesting to see how Holliday hits in a pitchers park and more interesting to see what Moreno does as a result.

Odd trade?
I wonder if Oakland knows something about whether we are really in the mix to sign TEX. If we sign TEX, Holiiday does absolutely nothing to improve the teams chances of winning the West. In my book they are still a couple of years away from winning the division. If we don’t sign Tex then the trade makes more sense because the division could be attained if they also sign Furcal or Giambi

Go Billy
A’s ERA 1st half 2008- 3.39
A’s ERA 2nd half 2008- 4.93
Of course, those numbers are likely to be even worse going forward because they included Greg Smith in this deal who was their best starter (non flukescherer division). Now all they need is a little more talent at 1B, 3B, SS, CF, and RF to go with some new starters and the miracle that would allow Zeigler and Devine to stay at their 2008 levels. Oh, they also need their 30+ year old second baseman to recover from surgery and prove he’s better than the guy who has been a below average hitter two of the last three years.
I’ve got a good friend who is an A’s fan (and a huge SABR guy) who finally lost patience with the marketing genus that is Billy Beane this year. After the ineptitude of last season’s fire sale he explained to me that the only reason that the Angels win is because of Arte’s money. When I responded back he continued, “if Arte wasn’t paying Beane to #### up, the A’s would still have a credible team.”
I’m starting to think he wasn’t kidding.
