Magglio Ordonez Rumor
This article speculates that the Tigers might end up trading Ordonez, and the best fit is with the Angels. They need a catcher (Mathis), shortstop (Aybar), and reliever (?).
Sounds good to me.

Sounds good and all...
But the remaining amount on his contract would eat up a lot of payroll, maybe if the Tigers shared some of the contract

If Only
I would love this trade. If we sign or don’t sign tex I would go for this. If we can give up mathis, aybar and mosely we wouldn’t miss those guys at all. However Detroit will probably want napoli, wood and arredondo.

up for debate
the actual batting order is up for debate. If howie starts swinging the way he should he obviously is the best fit for the 2 hole.

I don't want to see mosley go
yeah he had some bad starts early last year, but he had really good ones down the stretch when we had saunders and weaver out.

depth
Mosley might be someone detroit actually takes. I would offer them spier first but odds of them going for that would be slim. When it comes down to it Mosley is expendable and if he would get us ordonez in return you have to make that deal.

just pass on sabathia
I will take tex and ordonez. Sabathia is going to be over paid for what he is, he belongs in the NL. With that kind of offense we can just let our youth battle it out for the 5th spot in the rotation.

What power?
Last I checked, the little that Magglio had has, with the exception of 2007, been non-existent since 2003.

it isn't all about power
never said anything about power just offense. Ordonez can at least hit over .300 have 20 hrs and over 100 RBIs thats an upgrade over anderson.

Ok
Fine, I’ll modify my response.
Offense? What offense?
OPS+ in 2007: 159. Great!
Average OPS+ 2003-2008, excluding 2007: 121, and dropping fast. You know that his HR rate and RBIs, again with the exception of 2007, have been steadily dropping, right? You might get one semi-decent year out of Mags in ’09 and then be stuck with another GA—only, you know, without that second-half streak that makes up for sucking the rest of the season.

07 wasn't 10 years ago
If we sign tex and make this trade ordonez would the 3rd or 4th best hitter on the team. To have another 100 RBI threat among vlad and tex would be amazing. His numbers haven’t been dropping steadily 07 was only a year ago where he hit .363 28 hr and 139 RBIs. He still had .317 21hr and 103 RBIs last year, it is a one year drop off from a batting champ year. Anybody that wouldn’t like to see someone put up those type of numbers when they aren’t even your 3rd or 4th hitter would be crazy.

No
Maybe a few years ago, but not now.
The LAST thing we need is yet another over the hill, no more power guy clogging up the outfield. Might as well just re-sign GA for three years and $50 million—and probably get better production.

Yeah, you're right
The Angels don’t need anyone with a career average .371 OBP (which he did better than last year) clogging up the basepaths. I suppose they should keep Mathis and Aybar, if that’s truly what it’d take to get him, because they’re MUCH better and the Angels don’t want to be too shallow at the mid-infield positions.
Maybe Mathis can play left, he’s only 25 years-old.
Sorry, don’t mean to be so “snarky”, but who cares how old he is? Plus, if the deal is good (Mathis, Aybar and Mosely) why pass it up? I’d dig up Ty Cobb if I thought he’d hit only .317 and get on base over a third of the time.

So you do realize
That (again with the exception of 2007), that his slugging, (fielding), HR rate, and overall OPS have been steadily declining for each of the past five or six years, right?
You REALLY want to watch that decline continue, if not accelerate, in an Angels uniform?

You're right
he is declining, but he’s still better than a lot of other options. I’m just worried that some of the younger guys aren’t ready yet. I’d love to see Morales do well, but even best expectations for 2009 aren’t as good as an Ordonez off year…at least in 2009. 2010 will probably be a different story, but I want to see a championship this year and then worry about the following years.
I admit, probably not the best way to think about it, but I don’t want to see another first round elimination.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.

Think of it this way
We give Morales 500 ABs in RF/at DH next year, which he is able to use to grow, develop, and mature at the major league level to become one of the elite starters in the game, as we know he will.
Or we sink those ABs into Magglio Ordonez, who isn’t going to get better and will, in fact, continue to get worse.
I’d much rather develop the young talent that’s still growing and going somewhere.

Oh hell yes
And then we can sign Manny and Bobby Abreu and Ken Griffey and Raul Ibanez and G.A., then trade for Jermaine Dye, and only then will we be able to corner the market on every last 35+ corner outfielder with legs made of cement.

And score more runs than the 2008 Angels. Maybe win 105 games, and possibly a World Series.
