Rosenthal: Angels unlikely to go for Manny...

First, Frankie and now this. Only unlike the previous statement, Arte doesn't explicitly say he won't go after Manny.

From MLBtraderumours:

Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal said the Angels briefly considered Manny Ramirez during their organizational meetings, but the idea was "tabled rather quickly."

Still, Angels owner Arte Moreno was full of kind words for Manny yesterday on an AM-830 radio show:

"He single-handedly took L.A. to the promised land.  He did a heck of a job, he hit great, he was a fan favorite, he did a great job with their young players. At the end of the day, you want people who can hit, and he may be one of top right-handed hitters ever."

It's hard to see the Angels getting serious about Ramirez unless Mark Teixeira and C.C. Sabathia sign elsewhere first.

I am one who does not support Manny being a Halo. However, his bat is undeniable. What do you think?

ARETE'S COMMENTS ON MANNY

Arte said all that specifically to throw Scott Boras a bone and drive up the price on Manny as it appears there is anther competitor for the dreaded-one’s services. This then allows Boras to throw the Angels a bone and steer Teixeira our way.

(wishful thinking, i know, i know…)

I'm not sure he had another motive in his comment

While listening to the broadcast (recorded version), I think the question took him a little by surprise and he answered with a spur-of-the-moment response, with little premeditative thought. I think he honestly likes Manny, or at least would consider him for his team.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

Here's a quote from Arte on the Angels website that is even more telling:
That’s a question for Mike and Tony," Moreno said, referring to Angels manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Tony Reagins. "For us, Manny hits. He’s a clutch guy.

“He did a great job with Boston, and he did a great job with the Dodgers. Some people just hit, whether they’re 30, 32 or 37. And I think he’s better fitted for the American League because we have the designated hitter.”

I have to agree with Rev Halofan, this is very unusual for Arte to express such overt interest in a free agent currently on the market. Makes you think there must be an alterior motive for these statements from an organization that is traditionally extremely secretive about negotiating for players. I don’t think Arte stating that signing Teixeira is still his focus is a lie though, as that is pretty obvious from what has been reported since last July.

With GA gone, it clears LF for Manny, or was that the purpose all along? Does Arte want both Manny and Teixeira on the team? How bad did acquiring the power hitter bug bite Arte after winning just another American League West but coming up way short in the playoffs? I personally think we are going to have a “bigger” team next year with Arte and Tony’s determination.

manny is not worth the one good season

and then a season full of antics, slacking off, and frankly, acting like a little bitch.

Manny cleaned up his act quite a bit while with the Dodgers.

He is also credited with uniting the clubhouse where there was previously a rift between veteran and rookie players. That had a lot to do with the Dodgers players working better as a team and contributing to success in making it into the post season.

tenure

He wasn’t in LA long enough to get bored and start acting stupid and saying even stupider things. Give him a full year, and another star like vlad or tex to draw attention from him… and he will start up.

Or.....

By having Vlad around he can have someone there to maintain some sort of latin connection like he had with Ortiz in Bahston

wow

I love how people dog on manny for his antics, but he produces. Who cares if he doesn’t sprint to first on grounders, GA doesn’t either.

Who would you rather have Eckstein running out grounders and sprinting to first on walks or manny?

I think Manny wants to get back at Boston and also knows that this will be his last contract, so i think he won’t slack off.

slacking off

manny’s “slacking off” is still an elite player. Manny and Tex in our lineup would be unreal.

1. figgins
2. kendrick
3. Tex
4. manny
5. Vlad
6. Hunter
7. Napoli
8. wood(ss)
9. who cares

Carlos Quentin's time has arrived.

good Lord...

K-Mo would bat 8th.. Wood 9th.

but HOLY CRAP. pipe dream or not, that lineup is amazing.

Kotch would've had that.

if

and when Manny acts out, and splinters the clubhouse, are all going to be happy? especially if they don’t win the WS. haven’t you guys ever worked with pricks who are only in it for themselves and don’t care about helping out.

now THAT lineup would scare opposing pitchers

What better way is there to stick it to the Dodgers?

Sign Manny and screw your neighbor!

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.

Dodgers

we shouldn’t even conern ourselves with the Dodgers. they have no direction. we need to just focus on the Angels and not worry about them.

Anybody that doesn't see Arte's motive here...

hasn’t been paying attention in the past. We changed our name, put up billboards downtown, and did everything possible from a marketing standpoint to to steal fans and generate more revenue.

ANy move in this direction is more about the Dodgers than Manny. Like Boras said, “Manny pays for himself.”

i know

i personally have no problems with him trying to get the LA market and think Big. actually i think it was a great move on his part. Arte can do whatever he wantsbut putting LA in front it doesn’t matter. maybe in Riverside, SanBerdo, LA County(SGV), he can create a bigger fan base. its going to take a real long time to take over the LA market so short term solutions like Manny wont do anythink in my opinion.

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.

I say

if we do sign him we put some little clauses in it. For example, no bathroom breaks during pitching changes or listening to music on your sunglasses. But by all means clap as many fans hands as you like, as long as you hit 30+ homeruns, drive in 100+ and clutch up unlike every other player we have! I would be happy to take him. Think of all the revenue and think of how pissed the east coast media would be cause they have to cover us because of manny and we would piss off the red sox(beautiful) and the dodgers(beautiful) and the A’s because their Holliday deal still means nothing (beautiful). Let’s go for it.

Arte has run his mouth off before

and not come through. Let’s keep that in mind. He’s not as tight-lipped as Scioscia and Ninja. They might have been smacking their heads when they heard Arte say this.

Scioscia - He provides to unlike method of your team member.

Manny et all

Screw offense. Trade for Peavy and sign Sabathia. Then pitch, run and steal your way to the world series.

Just a thought. I’m not totally convinced either, really.

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
