USA Today: Angels 2nd Best-Run Franchise Past Five Years

USA Today finally doesn't show hardly any bias, ranking the Angels as the number two run team in the bigs, behind-- who else, the Red Sox. I sadly have to agree with this analysis, as the Angels and Red Sox have been neck in neck for the last five years (which is what the rankings are based on), except for the most important category-- titles. I think that if we beat them one of our last two playoff series against them, we could've topped them on this list.

In case anybody was wondering, the Yankees got 4th and the Dodgers 5th. Another two years with two world titles should put us over the top :).

Red Sox have National Media Boosters

considering we are still off the radar a hundred miles away from Anaheim we are actually the superior franchise in doing so much with only local resources and paltry-to-nonexistent media coverage.

Agree with that statement

Moreno has done a great job considering the unique challenges he faces with the Angels playing in a giant suburb in the West Coast. He has transformed them from a small market team into a big market team due to his gumption.

The Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and even Dodgers will always have more financial resources than the Angels, so considering what the Angels have to work with they have been the superior franchise. I just hope Moreno continues to spend money and be creative with ways to increase revenue.

Angels season-opening payroll = $119 million

Who cares about media coverage? The Angels have almost twice as much money to work with as the Minnesota Twins, and three times as much as the Rays. They’re only a few million shy of the Red Sox. You guys cannot possibly think of yourself as underdogs. Can you?

Arte

because he’s spending money. his own money. investing into his own team. Twins have a cheap owner that doesn’t spend money. Rays were ownership sucked until recently. so we’ll see how high they eventually get. Twins fans accept chance at the playoffs so there’s no pressure on managment. those mid market teams should be pissed at their owners for not doing it like Arte does.

Agree

Ownership is the biggest factor in determining the amount of money available to a team. If Moreno was an owner with less ingenuity or if he just wanted to pocket a bunch of money, he could have a payroll of like 70 million and justify it by keeping the Anaheim Angels name and saying Anaheim is a small market considering it only has a population of around 300,000+. Moreover, he could argue that the Dodgers are to the Angels what the Lakers are to the Clippers and simply say that his Angels can’t compete for the hearts of So Cal fans further limiting his ability to finance a good team with a competitive payroll. Then he can argue that he needs to increase ticket prices in order to even finance a 70 million payroll when in reality he is just pocketing the money. Too many owners do this unfortunately. Luckily Moreno isn’t one of them.

Media coverage

Is the best free publicity and free advertisement. Just ask Paris Hilton. No talent, no brains, needs a nose job, yet she’s a household name.

For baseball, it’s a great tool in reaching out to the casual fan, non-baseball fans, and even convincing those that a team that takes about an 1.5-2 hours or more to drive and see is your home team. In Southern CA (excluding SD and Imperial Counties), this free publicity helps the Dodgers (and Lakers in basketball) immensely outside of their Los Angeles County home.

If you turn on the local news or listen to sports talk radio here in the Greater Los Angeles area (I know my fellow OC residents aren’t going to like this, but I believe we are still considered part of the Greater LA area for media purposes), the Dodgers scores and highlights are mentioned first about 90% of the time while the Angels are mentioned second. Moreover, often times the Dodgers highlights on the local news have deeper coverage with interviews, more plays shown, etc. while the Angels highlights are shown in a blur. This obviously sends a covert message to people which team the news deems more important which can easily convince viewers that the team the news gives more priority to is more important which translates into more fans for that team.

Being the shrewd billboard mogul that he is, Moreno obviously understood the power of publicity and advertisement and realized the local media would continue to neglect the Angels so he took matters into his own hands by changing the team’s name from Anaheim to Los Angeles, placing billboards in LA County, and in his most recent and brilliant move yet purchasing AM 830, moving the Angels there, and turning most of the station into sports talk radio programming. If the local news media wasn’t going to give the Angels much publicity, he figured he might as well do it himself even if he had to spend his own money to do so.

While the Dodgers get all the free publicity locally and while the Red Sox get all the free publicity nationally, Moreno has to pay out of his pocket to generate publicity and media coverage for the Angels. So far it has worked. He has convinced people outside of OC to make the commute to see the Angels play. If the local media for years has been able to persuade people outside of LA County to make the long drive to support and see a “home team” that, at least to South OC residents, is no shorter of a drive than the commute to San Diego to see the Padres, then Moreno figured he could create his own publicity to convince people outside of OC to commute to see and support the Angels. By doing this he created more fans and a bigger market for the Angels on his own.

If the Angels had significant media coverage like the Red Sox do nationally or even the Dodgers locally, then Moreno wouldn’t have had to spend his own money on billboard advertising in LA County or change AM 830 to a predominantly sports talk station in order to generate the publicity that would have came for free from local and national media coverage.

That is why Moreno and fans of the Angels care about media coverage. More media coverage=more fans=higher payroll=higher probability of fielding a playoff team.

I can see it now........

If Arte gets Jake Peavy from the Padres next season he could put up Angels billboards all over San Diego County with Jakes’ picture just like he does here with Vlad, and start reeling in the fans to Anaheim spending their Padre bucks with us.

Paint all of SoCal Red including Imperial County

That would be one controversial move on Arte’s part. I know the Padres would be pissed since it would make their already small market even smaller.

Living in SD for school most of the year, I am amazed that the Padres are able to survive with such a small media market.

If the Halos win the WS

in ’09, then which team will be labeled the “Team of the Decade?”

Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

is there any doubt?

the Red Sox pass us in every way, simply because they play in Boston and ESPN says so.

duh.

Kotch would've had that.

Don't forget the unwavering support

of Red Sox Nation!!!

Also don't forget

That ‘10 still counts as part of this decade. If we win in ’09 AND ’10, that gives us THREE WS titles in the decade, compared with Boston’s TWO. If we make that even sweeter by beating Boston BOTH TIMES on the way to the WS, THEN the Angels are clearly the best of the decade.

Light Up That Halo!

that still wouldn’t do it.

they won for the first time in 86 years. that makes them the bestest evah OMGZ!

…man, i hate everything about them.

Red Sox would win

only because in any city you go to there is always some asshole wearing a Boston hat. Point being, Red Sox have way more national support than the Angels have and may EVER have.

Thats fine though. Im fine with quietly going along…kicking some butt…and surprising everyone now and then. I think its great we got that recognition from USA Today. Ask the average Joe on the street and I feel like they would put the Yankees above us. But clearly, we have had the yanks card for quite sometime now.
