Padres GM: Peavy to Angels or NYY
After failing to reach a deal with Jake Peavy's preferred teams, Cubs or Braves, Padre's General Manager Kevin Towers indicates the teams next in line he will try to negotiate with are the Angels and the Yankees. It has been widely reported that the Yankees only have eyes for C.C. Sabathia.

get peavy get peavy get peavy get peavy
did i mention we should get peavy?
Go gettem next year, what have we got to lose--Frankie?
it all depends on their needs
i like the fact that Towers has said it’s about the “quality of players coming back, not quantity”.
the Ninja has also said that he wouldn’t trade 4 or 5 guys for Peavy.
could it work? yes, i believe so. Peavy’s a great pitcher. but the price has to be reasonable.
Kotch would've had that.
spot on HTM........
no need to give up the farm for him though………….
Miss you Kotch......Love you Trent

totally agree
if we can give up 3 good (not great) guys, then i’m all for it.
heck, even 1 great and 2 good.
like i said, it has to be reasonable.
Kotch would've had that.

JAKE PEAVY'S CONTRACT:
2009: $8
2010: $15M
2011: $16M
2012: $17M
2013: $22M club option ($4M buyout)
Without 2013 that is $60 Million – LESS THAN HALF of what Sabathia is likely to get – and Peavy is 10 months younger than CC, 2.5 years younger than Lackey – and I will take the risk of elbow trouble to shoulder problems any day.
You are going to need Howie Kendrick, Dustin Moseley and Nick Adenhart and probably another pitching prospect. Maybe Joe Saunders, Adenhart and Sean Rodriguez get the deal done.
This would give the Angels an amazing rotation that would also be a poem:
Lackey-Peavy
Santana-Weavy
Saundo
Then hand it to Shields
and Arredondo.
Wait, wait
We’d only have to pay him EIGHT DOLLARS in 2009????
Sweet! Sign me up!

Money wise...
Peavy is a hell of a lot of pitcher for a hell of a lot less than what CC will fetch. If it was up to me – save the CC money and give to Tex, trade for Peavy…

Towers
if the Padres are really in a bind. Towers is really under the gun from the owner. i woudn’t give more then 3 player quality players mabye a 4th fringe player. 2 arms and 1 bat. Saunders, Adenhart, S-Rod. or Adenhart, HK, another minor league arm(Jepsen, O’Sullivan types)
how about
aybar, green, and s-rod?
Go gettem next year, what have we got to lose--Frankie?

Aybar, Adenhart, S-Rod
and you might have a deal.
Kotch would've had that.

thats not good enough
we would be getting Peavy. there going to want 2 arms. 1 proven and 1 prospect. i can’t see them taking only Adenhart for Peavy.
Including Saundo would be a huge mistake.
I like your first three to get the deal done, that seems pretty realistic, but hey, maybe even get it done with out HK, and include a couple other prospects.

Upside....
Signing Peavy could draw his fans away from the Padres and in to Arte Moreno’s pocketbook. It is not that far from SD to Anaheim to watch your favorite pitcher and who knows they could find themselves converted to Angels fans and season ticket holders.

Hello? Is anyone there?
Are you all out of your minds? You would include Saunders or Santana in ANY trade? What are you guys smoking? What got us through last season? Saunders and Santana, that’s what! Neither of them gets traded! They are both very young, cheap, and really good! Pitching was not our downfall in the playoffs or during the season!
Get a grip folks! Absolutely and positively NOT!
Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August, er September, er October...? Miss ya Kotch, but Tex is THE man!

I wouldn't
Trade either of them—though I’d be more comfortable saying that if I wasn’t concerned about whether Santana will replicate 2008 or 2007 in 2009. If he’s going to go all 2007, then now would be an excellent time to trade him. Otherwise, he stays. Until he retires.

No way on Saunders or Santana
I was thinking more along the lines of Adenhart, Aybar, Willits and another minor leage P

I don't think that'll be enough
The problem I think the Angels will have making a Peavy deal is they don’t have that “stud” triple-A pitcher (or position player for that matter), and Santana/Saunders/Weaver shouldn’t be included in the deal.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
YES PLEASE
Not in Peavy a better pitcher than CC but he would come at a fraction of the cost. This is also good news that the Padres GM isn’t getting what he wants from other teams so maybe he will get a little frustrated and settle for less by the time he gets done negotiating with us.
Welcome to the Halos, Peavy
He’s coming to us. No doubt. Bye Bye Howie. Sorry dude…hope those hamies hold up for ya.
Question: What prospects are we giving up?
I think Sean Rod. Which sucks…my girlfriend will be so bummed to see her eye candy leave the halos.

Ha
If you think we’re giving up Howie, we’re NOT giving up S-Rod, too. It would be one or the other.
Otherwise, who are we going to see playing 2B next year? A wooden plank?
And no, Figgy/Aybar does not count because one or both of them will be injured at any given point in the season.

I hope we don't give up too much for Peavy
but making a trade for Peavy would allow us to still throw top dollar at Tex. We wouldn’t have that freedom if we got Sabathia.

I think the Padres want two pitchers in the deal plus a position player.

Would you do that deal if you were the Padres?
Sorry, not trying to be a jerk, but I don’t think that’s a good enough deal for San Diego.
I’m not to sure about Morales’ ability to play the OF, is he adequate? (Not rhetorical, I truly don’t know.) If not, they don’t need another 1B.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
In a heartbeat
If I’m the Pads, I’d trade Peavy for Kendrick straight up. Cheap 2Bmen who might win batting titles don’t grow on trees. And every pitcher in the universe is one slider away from oblivion.
I would love to have Peavy
As long as the Angels don’t lose focus on their need for more power and OBP.
Peavy has been a stud with a bargain contract, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I was worried about his strong preference to stay in the NL. It makes me wonder if he doubts that he has what it takes to be an ace in the AL.
Whether or not
he studs out as an “Ace” – I am fairly positive he will not go the way of Zito – he will remain at the least one of the top number 2’s in a rotation (with a contract through the next 4 years) that will include Lackey (I assume he will get a new contract), Santana (under controle 3 more yrs), Saunders (4 more years), and Weaver (4 more yrs).
Taking a look at that possible rotation makes it easy for me to say yes to giving up our next in line pitching prospects…
Outfielders For Sale! This weeks special...GMJ - see Tony for details!
Peavy and...
Giles would both be solid additions. Giles could rotate with Vlad in right field, while providing an OBP boost batting second in front of Vlad/Tex. I think being able to include more prospects capable of league average production now at crucial positions – Bobby Wilson at catcher, perhaps Freddy Sandoval if the Pads think he has the glove for second – as well as being able to pick up both Peavy’s and Gile’s salary give the Angels a leg up in closing the deal. I know Giles turned down a trade last year to the Bo Sox, but I’m not sure he’d do the same for team playing right up the 5 freeway. Of course, the expensive part of the package would have to include Adenhart, one of O’Sulliven/Reckling/Smith, Aybar/Kendrick and perhaps Chris Pettit, who might provide Giles like production in PETCO within a year or two.
how about....
the padres throw in khalil green, and since their outfield is shaky, we send them gary matthews, nick adenhart, and erick aybar, and pick up a portion of matthews contract. or if they dont want matthews, give them willits and maybe a terry evans type guy.
Hmm
That’d be OK. Wouldn’t be giving up a ton and would get rid of a possibly bad contract (again, I’m waiting on GMJ’s post-surgery performance to decide he’s completely terrible).
Remember, though, that the Padres already had GMJ for a year or two and didn’t like what they saw. Might not want him back. Also, I like Greene, but giving up Aybar for Peavy makes sense in that the Angels can then hand the SS job to Wood full-time (or slide Figgins back over and stick Wood at 3B again), with Izturis and S-Rod backing up, or vice-versa.
I think the three-player idea could work in a swap for Peavy; maybe replace GMJ with a Terry Evans or Dee Brown or other such suitable OF.
Light Up That Halo!
peavy and tex should be our priorities
we can afford to give up everything but power, in my opinion. therefore, howie, izzy, aybar, figgy, and srod are all on the trading block. i’d give up any combination of those guys with adenhart.
I'm still not giving up on Howie
He’s still too valuable to give up. Think of it this way—after 2006, and especially after 2007, I was ready to throw Santana under the bus and hoped the Halos would get rid of him in a trade. Others counseled otherwise, and in the end they won out and Ervin stayed. Good thing, too. I’m getting the sneaking suspicion that the same sort of thing goes for Howie.
Otherwise, I’d be OK with your list.
