manny is the answer

After reading the manny thread and seeing all the people ripping on manny for his "antics" and his "slacking off" I had to ask if you guys care about production at all? Manny was an elite player last year with Boston, despite the dogging it to first, holding up "trade me" signs, etc. Additionally, there was a reason he wanted out of Boston, namely the overbearing fans and media, which doesn't exist in socal.

I posed the question who would you rather have between Eckstein running out grounders and manny. Anyone who doesn't say manny is crazy. "Grit" only gets you so far.

I want manny

as i stated in the manny thred if you throw some clauses in there I am perfectly happy with him. He hated Boston Boston hated him what more do you want from the guy. He still went out there and PRODUCED!! He can slap as many fans hands as he wants during the game…it will bring excitement. Remember he actually hits the ball when it counts! none of our guys could do that. This is why I say go get him, plus all the revenue he will bring to the Angels. Also, he is a latin player and our owner is Latin so hey mayb he’ll feel more at home, you never know! but i say go get him

Uh....in the postseason.....Vlad.Torri, Teix and Naps

did their jobs……..problem is production at the top and bottom of the lineups………its hard for the heart of the order to knock in themselves every game……..if manny some how helps that then Im all for it…..but the price has to be reasonable…..I’d rather have Teix for 6-8 years then Manny for 4-5

Miss you Kotch......Love you Trent

Ya it is kind for Morales to drive in runs from the #7/8 spot when he is on the bench.

Then they give him ABs with noone out and he gets singles and a HUGE double. What the hell is up with that? BTW I would take manny’s bat over Texs bat.

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want the bleepin' Red Sux ad to go away from the HH homepage damnit!

I already used my F bomb for November in my Pukish Blasphemy Fanpost!

I’ll take Manny…but I still want Tex as my first choice! I’m still pissed we had to give up Kotch and then epicly fail in the playoffs…bah humbug!

Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August, er September, er October...? Miss ya Kotch, but Tex is THE man!

by K3YEROUT on Nov 14, 2008 8:33 PM PST   0 recs

sure I would take manny...

…but not at $30 million a season. What kind of bullshit are you spreading while simultaneously calling your self “moneyball”?

He's a junkie.

Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

If Manny is the answer, I'd love to know what the question is?

Which free agent signing would be most likely to cause the front office to want to strangle a member of the squad? Manny

If the Angels signed him, who would the worst fielding left fielder in the AL west be? Manny

How many reasons to regret this signing would Reagins and Scoscia have? Manny

I see red people

by The Limey on Nov 15, 2008 5:58 AM PST   0 recs

Though, to be fair...

…if the Angels signed him, who would the best hitter in the AL West be? Could also be Manny…

Manny is a prick.

I don’t like pricks on my team, regardless of their production.

by NoDakHalo on Nov 15, 2008 11:20 AM PST   0 recs

agree

Manny has a great bat but damn him. we can win without guys like him. we did in ’02. i know that seems long ago but it can be done. were on the right track. lets stay the course. its not like were missing the playoffs like the yanks. i hate losing the Redsox like all you guys. i hate losing period. when we finally get over that bump in the road its going to be sweet and doing it with our guys will be even better.

by HALO_86 on Nov 15, 2008 11:34 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I like pricks on my team

if they can hit like Manny. And he’s only a prick when he’s not happy. He was happy with the Dodgers and was not a clubhouse problem at all. In fact, the players LOVED him. Joe Torre said that when Manny first came to the team, he would move his stool to different areas of the clubhouse and start a new conversation every 15 minutes or so to get to know his teammates. James Loney had an “I love Manny being Manny” T-shirt when they won the division and I’ve seen Andre Ethier and James Loney do interviews while wearing Manny dreads. Oh and once during a post-game interview with Manny and Angel Berroa, Manny acted as a translator for Berroa, making the interviewer think that Berroa didn’t speak English or at least not very well and then by the third or 4th question, he answered in English and the guy was all like “wtf?” and Manny and Angel were just laughing their asses off. It was great. Manny can be a really good and fun guy when he wants to be. He clearly was unhappy in Boston and wanted out for several years and he finally got his wish. I really don’t think he’d be a problem in the clubhouse. Him and Vladdy would become instant BFF’s. In fact, here is that Manny/Berroa interview I was talking about:

hmm

isn’t’ that how they all act in their walk yr?

by HALO_86 on Nov 17, 2008 10:21 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I just think

that his bad behavior is not all because he’s a bad person. Him not being happy was a huge part of it and I think he truly was happier in LA, and not just because it was his walk year. The media pressure here is not anything like it is in Boston and his outlandish personality is much more accepted here than in Bwaston. They are a bunch of Chowda heads.

Also, he’s been the number 1 Halo killer over the past several years so having him on our team would be great for that reason obviously. In his short time in LA, he made their young hitters a lot better and our young guys like Brandon Wood and Kendry Morales could learn a lot from Manny. In the AL, we could more afford to give him a 3 or 4 year deal than the Dodgers would since we have the DH. And since he wouldn’t demand an 8 to 10 year deal, he’d be cheaper than Tex.

I think Tex should be the number 1 priority but if that falls through the Halos should seriously consider Manny.

by Chzburger Jones on Nov 17, 2008 3:51 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Let me guess...

The question is, “How do we waste $80 million over 4 years on another DH?”

"It's just a tiny little nick, but it hurts when I get champagne in there."
- Jason Bay, on getting spiked scoring the winning run in ALDS Game Four.

by 0157H7 on Nov 15, 2008 10:44 PM PST   0 recs

Not really.

The Epstein FO placed him on waivers a few years back – anyone could have gotten Ramirez, for the low introductory price of $20 million per. And if you read Moneyball, Beane’s first action if he joined the Red Sox would have been to dump Manny.

Manny makes almost zero sense for the Angels. You have a DH (Vlad), and a group of better defensive outfielders. Manny in left would be a big defensive downgrade, cutting into the marginal gain from his bat. Plus he wants huge money for 4+ years.

i wasnt mocking you....

was the OP. I agree that Manny makes no sense for the Angels. I too have read Moneyball, thats why I just thought this was weird.

by linkbruin on Nov 18, 2008 9:35 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I'd like to have him

I understand he’s a goofball and he dogs it sometimes, but the impact he’d have on the Angels would be huge. And I’m not just talking about in the lineup. The press coverage would increase, which would increase attendance and merchandise…everything. His salary could almost be written off as advertising because of the increased exposure he bring to whatever team he plays for. Look at last season, how many “99” Dodger jerseys and stupid Dodger hats with dreds did you all of a sudden start seeing?

I know a lot of you enjoy the obscurity and the love to complain about ESPN’s eastcoast bias, but signing Manny would bring the focus this way…and that’s a good thing.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

by WiHaloFan on Nov 16, 2008 7:34 AM PST   0 recs

your right

so instead of Manny for 4 yrs, lets sign Bonds for 1 yr. same coverage from the east coast media. less yrs invested. less money. equal impact.

by HALO_86 on Nov 16, 2008 10:23 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Sounds good to me,

Okay, maybe not this year, but I was all for the Angels signing Bonds last year. He’s the uber-douche, but hard to complain about a .500 OBP. I have confidence that the Angels’ management would be able to work with and motivate Manny, and his pluses outweigh his minuses.

I appreciate the sarcasm.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

people don't change

they may change for a little bit but they always show their true colors. especially for a grown man. he’s set in his ways. you can’t change it. i wish i had the confidence that we can but we won’t. if he starts acting up with a long term deal, its not like we can trade him away and eat his contract like the Redsox basically did. Arte has money but cmon.

he wasn’t making anything close to what Manny is going to make. how many teams do u think can trade for a guy like that without the Angels eating some of the contract. if other teams know the Angels want to get rid of him their not going to get much help in return.

I agree completely.

Nobody gave a damn about the Dodgers but when they landed Manny, they were one of the most talked about teams on ESPN. They got more attention than the Yankees and Red Sox.

by bigthin13 on Nov 18, 2008 8:04 PM PST   0 recs

You'd be dumb not to

Not only the thought of signing Manny, but the fact our owner mentioned it, elates me. First and foremost, year in and year out, we lose to the Red Sox in the playoffs due to our inability to hit in pressure situations. The biggest hits were Napoli’s two jacks, Hunter’s RBI in game 4, and Aybar’s dunker into left center (Which was a ball by the way). I read a lot about Tex and Vlad getting singles, and singles only. GA not coming through big when it counts in the playoffs.

If Tex wasn’t the answer, and I know signing Sabathia isn’t the answer to our offense, why the hell not Manny? You want to get over the hump? You sign ManRam. I think he’d love to get back at the Red Sox. He’s got another 4-5 years in him. He’s built to hit.

Who’s bat would you rather have two years from now, Vlad, or Manny? In two years, one of them will likely be a full time DH. With Vlad slowing in a major way, I’d take Manny now, while we have the chance. Now he can’t do it all by himself. Signing Tex is another must for us.

Jesus, shut up about the money. It’s not yours. What? You may have to pay an extra $20 a game. Cry me a river. If you can’t afford to go, then don’t go. I want a winner, I’m all for signing Manny. If money is that big of a deal breaker for some of you, we just cut ties with GA, Rivera, K-Rod, Garland, and Oliver. Oliver being the only one I want back.

My solutions are this:

C: Napoli
1: Tex
2. Kendrick
SS: Wood
3: Figgins
LF: Manny
CF: Hunter
RF: Vlad
DH: Morales (Also playing LF/RF giving rests as needed)
Bench: Willits
Bench: Rodriguez
Bench: Quinlan
Bench: Mathis
Bench: Izturis

SP: Lackey
SP: Santana
SP: Saunders
SP: Weaver
SP: One of our kids, doesn’t matter.
RP: Oliver
RP: Bulger (Or if Escobar can come back)
RP: Bootcheck (Or if Escobar can come back, and for long relief)
RP: Mosely (For long relief)
Setup: Shields
CP: Arredondo

Where is Matthews and Aybar? Traded for minors leaguers. Eat half of Matthews salary. Just eat it.

1. Figgins
2. Kendrick
3. Texeira
4. Ramirez
5. Guerrero
6. Hunter
7. Morales
8. Napoli
9. Wood

by matt92130 on Nov 19, 2008 1:58 AM PST   0 recs

yeah right

are you telling me if you had the decision making powers you would give Manny a 4/100 contract? you would feel comfortable going to Arte and convincing him of that. assuring him this will work out. then some shit hits the fan and Manny goes stupid. then what? or lets say things go well, but we still lose in the frickin playoffs. then what? once you sign Manny to a contract like that and it doesn’t workout then the team is in trouble budget wise. Manny for 1-2 yrs is a risk worth takin but for 4 yrs no way! he’s a prick will always be a prick. people in the 30’s don’t change.

by HALO_86 on Nov 19, 2008 10:10 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

realistically

what in your mind is next yr’s team budget? i’m thinking the most will be 125M. GMJ is going to take more then half. probably 75% of the amount. he’s injured and coming off a horrible 2 yrs.

by HALO_86 on Nov 19, 2008 10:24 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I think you're saying what I was trying to say.

No one wants to pay half of GMJ’s salary. If there were any takers, you’re 75% number is closer to reality (or a mutual salary dump).

Though I have spent the past two years disparaging GMJ every chance I’ve had, I noticed recently that he did hit decently against lefties. I feel compelled to point out that he might have some value in a platoon.

by snowhor on Nov 19, 2008 11:22 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

i know

i forgot to add that on my original post. maybe i think of Arte’s money as if it was mine. i wouldn’t pay 75% of GMJ salary so he can play somewhere else unless we get a something back in value. he may never be that 10M a yr player but he has some value i would like to get that out of the Angels before we trade him away and eat alot of his salary.

by HALO_86 on Nov 19, 2008 11:51 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I hear ya..... BUT

Frankie, Garland, GA, and Rivera are gone which freed up about $36M. Tex will cost 8 years $160M ($20-22M per year). Man Ram will likely get 4 years $90M ($22M per year). If we get them both, it puts us at about $128M. I think the payroll last year was around a $123M. I know Arte would like to keep it there but as far as standing before him if I was the GM, absolutely. I’d tell him the extra $5M will be worth it (Twice!). He even said he’d go a little higher for the right players. And if we could trade GMJ (Fine, eat 75% if need be), we gained $2.25M back. Plus, we have Willits and Morales. We should be carrying 5 OF’s and 5 only. Also, with GMJ’s contract, say we keep him for 2009, that pretty little no trade clause goes away after 2009. He’ll only be able to block up to four teams. Nice right?

Next year, don’t bring back Vlad ($15.5M), unless he’a healthy, productive, willing to play more DH, and take a small pay cut. We have Morales who can jump in RF full time, at a cheaper option. I want Morales to play. There’s more money off the books for 2010, which can be spent on Lackey’s extension. Escobars’ $9.5M is gone after this year too. So really, the payroll is only up this year. Just Vlad and Escy gone puts $26M back in Arte’s pocket for 2010. With that, spend a little more on a couple of relievers then and maybe a DH.

Basically, plenty of money to go around if that’s the concern. But the idea is keeping your team in balance. Which Man Ram and Tex will provide after next year. This year is the year we are hands down better, and should win it all. As far as injuries go… dude, seriously? Anyone can be injured, at any time, for any reason. He’ll be fine, and he’s worth the risk of injury. He’s built better than Vlad. Manny is short and stocky, while Vlad is long and just down right looks awkward.

by matt92130 on Nov 20, 2008 12:19 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

i c what your sayin

all the money we have left will go to those 2 players(Manny & Tex) then your saying were going with #5 starter(Moseley, Loux, Adenhart, Green) to begin the season. hope that Escobar comes back healthy. if not hopefully 1 of those guys can get 5-6/start. Bullpen(Shields, Spiers, Arredondo,?,?,?) no room to add a vet. Honestly thats cool if you can get those guys for 20-22M/yr. i personally doubt that. I think Manny and Teix will get 25/yr. i just think were totally thin with pitching. we’re all happy about Santana and Saunders performing the way they did. only think is their still young will have up and downs still.

by HALO_86 on Nov 20, 2008 10:52 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Pitching can still be our strength...

Saunders is seasoned. Not in years, but just how he handles himself. I love his mental make-up. As for Magic Santana, I really feel he has the most electric stuff on our roster. I think he made the turn this past year. Weaver will always be completely unhittable one night, and hittable the next (The key is not giving up the big double in the later innings). But I think he’s light years better than his brother and I’m cool with having him as our #4. I like our kids… I think at some point, you have to give Adenhart (22 Year old)) and Green (24 Year old) a shot. Not just a few spot starts, let them fight for the 5th slot. I have a man crush on Nick Green. The kid is money…. big, strong, and solid command. I’m not terribly impressed with Moseley, but he could provide long relief in our bullpen. As for Loux… he’s going to be 30 next year. He’s a career minor leaguer… maybe a bullpen arm. I’ll bet Aybar could fetch a single A arm or two. Escobars’ return to me is gravy. When you haven’t pitched in a year in a half, you’re bound to have some bumps in the road. But I’d love to see him in our ‘pen to finish his career (If healthy). I love his make-up and bulldog attitude on the mound. I think he’d be great for those pressure situations come September. It’s always nice to have a fresh, accomplished arm that time of the year. Plus we have a couple of youngsters name Rafael Rodriguez (Dominican) and Anthony Ortega (Venezuelan) that have similiar builds to Arredondo and Santana. I think our picthing is still pretty good.

The big thing is getting offense. If we don’t get offense, it’s possible big John won’t sign after the option is up next year. Then we’re hurting for pitching. Manny puts us over the top this year. And takes the place of Vlad next year. Hey, I’d rather have Manny than Vlad. I’m not saying, outright, get rid of Vlad, but, obviously at less money and on the Angels terms (More DH).

by matt92130 on Nov 20, 2008 10:37 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Forgot something...

If it takes $25M per, vice $22M per to get both these guys in Angels uniforms. Do it. It’s $6M extra per. If you can afford (Which they can), $22M, then you can afford $25M. If $6M is standing in your way of getting two of the greatest hitters in all of baseball…. you’re in the wrong business.

after 09

like you said we let Vlad walk away. probably Figgins. Lackey will need a huge contract per yr. really how much more can Arte put into payroll? all the young guys within the next 1-3yr will be arbitration eligible. you can have the best 2 hitters in the game but without support around them there’s no point. we saw it this yr in the playoffs. Teix and Vlad stepped up. the rest didn’t and we lost. if we get Manny and Teix for 09 then we have to win it because the team will have to shed payroll for ‘10. i just don’t want to see 2 great hitters and bunch of kids trying to figure out what their doing.
