I'm not sold on Sabathia
It has been long reported that free agent pitcher Carsten Charles Sabathia will be the focus of the Angels if they fail to land Mark Teixeira. I don't know about you guys but I think this is a bad idea. Let CC go to the Yankees or Dodgers. Here's why:
1) We need OFFENSE. Our starting pitching was exceptional last year and we didn't have a true big name pitcher. Sure, John Lackey is pretty well known but he is never mentioned in the same breath as the Sabathia's, Santana's (of the Johan variety), Beckett's, and Halladay's of the world. With Jon Garland expected to depart via free agency, the Angels rotation will be perfectly fine as long as they sign a decent, cheap back-end starter. Somebody like Randy Johnson.
2) This team is already choc full of players who flame out in the post-season. WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER ONE. Take a look at Sabathia's career post-season statistics:
5 starts, 2-3 record, 7.92 ERA, 25 IP (that's only 5 innings per start for you mathematically challenged individuals), 33 hits allowed, 24 K, 22 BB (again, a K/BB ratio of nearly 1)
And most of these atrocious numbers have come just in the past 2 seasons. He had 5.40 ERA in the 2007 ALDS, a 10.45 ERA in the 2007 ALCS, and a 12.27 ERA in the 2008 NLDS. So he single-handedly got the Brewers to the playoffs but he also had a big say in their early exit as well. The Angels don't need help getting to the playoffs. We have been able to do that consistently and plus we play in a pathetic division. We need help WINNING in the playoffs. Sabathia has shown he can't really do that.
This off-season is truly Tex or bust if you ask me.

I think I'd rather resign K-Rod than sign C.C.
if we don’t get Tex. Either way we’d then have to trade for a big bat. But I agree, C.C. is a waste of our time and money.

Bats, bats, bats.
The Angels need bats. If the Angels do nothing to address the lineup problems they will NOT win the AL West in 2009. That’s not to say they don’t need pitching, too. They need to add a starter and two relief pitchers. Tony Reagins and the front office have LOTS of work to do this offseason.
Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!

wondering
we have a void with #5. we don’t really need to add a vet unless its a guy like CC or Peavy. its time to let our young arms sink or swim. especially this yr with ALW it’s going to be weak again. Same with the Pen. Maybe add 1 vet. if we sign CC don’t u think we would have time to see if our young bats keep growing and rookies can actually play at this level, then whatever we need just make a trade using 1 of our starters as bait at the trade deadline?

Great call Halo_86...
I agree. Need to let our young kids sink or swim. If Plan A doesn’t work…onto my proposed Plan B. Either way, young arms, or young bats have to sink or swim.

We saw what happened with Bartolo
C.C.’s another Colon waiting to happen: Brilliant for a year or two, then an asplosion and complete mediocrity to follow.

Way off base
CC has always been a big man. I saw the guy in HS and he was a big boy then and will always be a big man. Colon had serious mechanical problems. Front side recoil was the big one. The club will need a starter but not so sure it should be someone that will cost as much as CC.
The truth is the bats that everyone loves are not so good. There are serious issues that need to be addressed. There is no solid OF replacement for the departure of GA, and the club needs to do something about 1B. What stinks is the team OBP%. The club only had 3 worth a damn when you count Tex. I say you need to worry about the offense right now and look for a cheaper solution for the 5th starter. RJ is a solid choice and not such a dark when you consider he wants to play on the West Coast and with a team that has a chance to win. Roll the dice on Braden Looper, or F. Garcia.

What I'm worried about
And what a lot of people are worried about, is that C.C. has been way overworked the past two seasons. He was pitched many times on 3-days rest throughout the last month of this past season, and it was done again in his NLDS start. We saw the effects of all that short rest in the NLDS.
Sure, C.C.‘s maybe got a rubber arm or what not, but it ain’t gonna last forever. Maybe he’ll recover fine next year, maybe not. But I’m saying right now that when we’re in year 3 or 4 of that fat 7 year contract C.C. gets, whoever lands him is going to seriously be questioning their judgment.

i'd roll the dice on Garcia
he’d come cheap.. probably a one or 2 year deal with incentives.
Kotch would've had that.

Hmm
Hadn’t thought of that. Might be a nice surprise.

that's what i'm thinking.
serviceable 5th starter at the worst… who knows? at the best.
Kotch would've had that.

True
Of course, the question becomes whether it’s smarter to sign Garcia or to give that development time to the young guys. I think that should depend on the kind of offense the Halos shape up to have. If it’s going to be a pretty powerful offense, then the F.O. can afford to try out a revolving door approach in the fifth spot, but if it looks like the offensive situation will be weak, it might be better to go with a more dependable option, such as Garcia.
It’d be good if Garcia wasn’t going to sign until mid-way through the season, like Clemens. That way the Halos would have enough time to figure out if putting the young guys in is going to work, and if it doesn’t, then go out and sign Freddy to a nice deal.

totally agree
if we break the bank on a high powered offense, we can probably afford to let Moseley or somebody else become the 5th starter.
if we have the extra money, though, it can’t hurt to add a guy like Garcia.
Kotch would've had that.

Good call about CC's Postseason record.
Heck I’d rather have Curt Schilling. At least he get’s it done when it counts!

Curt Schilling
is old, fat, and coming off injury. There is a good chance he’ll suck next season if he does pitch somewhere. I’d rather have his BFF Randy.

CC
I’m worried about the contract length that is being discussed. I just don’t see the reward outweighing the need/reward.
