OT: Open-Music Thread
So with Christmas coming up, a lot of us are probably asking for CDs or MP3s, and a lot of us are probably buying CDs or MP3s for other people, so I thought we could share some recommendations of great music that came out this year, or that came out earlier but that you discovered this year.
Here are mine:
Department of Eagles, "In Ear Park," an offshoot of the band Grizzly Bear. The songs are a bit peculiar and dreamy, but they're also playful and layered and occasionally have a great Phil Spector sorta vibe.
Nick Cave, "Dig!!! Lazurus, Dig!!!" The title track might be my favorite song out this year, but the whole album is just ferocious.
Fleet Foxes, self titled. Sorta 70s, sorta My Morning Jacket, sorta Shins.
Hot Chip, "Made in the Dark." It's electro-pop, but with a lot of instrumentation that gives these songs room to breathe. Super fun, and never monotonous.
and an album I just discovered this year is Michael Hurley's "Long Journey." Hurley was a songwriter whose recordings on the side were mostly overlooked, but this 1977 album is incredible. I learned of it because one of the songs, "Hog of the Forsaken," was used in Deadwood. You hear the song and it's pretty hard not to want to hear more of this guy.
Anybody else have some picks?

Not for nothing...
but if I were a tormented musical genius, I wouldn’t invite Pat Smear into my band. Didn’t work out to well for the last few.

New Rock Music Rant
I guess I am getting old, but I am not really into any new rock music. It seems like nothing is too original anymore.
I am tired of the skinny jean, tight t-shirt, white 20 something rock guys singing about high school crap or how they want to rock ‘n’ roll. Tired of Joy Division rip-offs, new wave revival, post-punk revival, synth pop revival, etc that NME claims is original and exciting. Tired of the cliche brash rocker that insults everyone, does drugs, drinks, etc. Tired of the fake upper middle class, easy on the eyes, skinny white dude that sings about how tough their life was growing up even though mommy and daddy probably provided the instruments, lessons, and other monetary resources that many other people would die to have.
Until rock musicians start to do something original instead or rehashing the music and visual images from the past, then I won’t be listening.

Wow,
did someone wash your Def Leppard shirt in the hot cycle? Buck up little camper, on the bright side the cycle of rehash/renewel will make grunge cool again in about 5 years, and the guys at lookout landing will have somehting to do besides sponsor web pages.

Always been a fan
of Social Distortion. The greatest hits album (while sounding like shite in comparison to the originals) is a way to ease new fans and a new generation in to the older stuff.

I recently rediscovered my vinyl Mommy's Little Monster album after 20 years
and The Creeps sounds just as good as it did when I bought it at Music Mart in CM.

I'm not a HIp-Hop fan but...
check out the new CD by People Under the Stairs. They’re local (L.A.) and really harken back to the days when rap music was fun and not in filled with in your face tough guys. Good beats, fun rhymes, an all around good party disc.

Old Music I discovered this year and like
The first album of Neu!, King Crimson’s first album, The Fall’s early stuff, and The Move’s Message from the Country album.
I guess I forgot to take my meds during that one rant. lol. These new artists may not be the Stones, Beatles, Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, or Gang of Four, but I will settle for something entertaining even if it’s not all that original. Just please no Jonas Brothers, Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects sounding rubbish.
