Rangers' minor league performances
Troubling news: the Texas Rangers are improving, and improving in a hurry. So much so, that I think we’ll hear Tampa Rays comparisons fly beginning late 2009.
The top 30 prospect performances of the Ranger’s system collectively outscored their Halos counterparts by 9%. When the two systems are ranked together, 6 of the top 10, and 19 of the top 30 scorers are Rangers.
Texas’ strengths include young shortstops and catchers, but the real jewels are power arms. Though many of these pitchers are years away, three starters - Neftali Feliz, Tommy Hunter, and Derek Holland - could all be in the Ranger’s rotation as soon as mid 2009, though 2010 is more likely for Feliz and Holland. Each of those starters posted performances in AA and AAA that rank in the top ten of the combined Angels and Rangers list.
Here's the top ten:
1. Angels - Will Smith, sp, 19. Rk k/inning: 1.04 k/bb:12.67 go/ao: 1.30
2. Rangers - Neftali Feliz, sp, 20. AA k/inning: 1.20 k/bb: 3.00 go/ao: 1.19
3. Rangers - Wilfredo Boscano, sp, 19. A-- k/inning: 1.01 k/bb: 6.36 go/ao: 1.50
4. Rangers - Martin Perez, sp 17. A-- k/inning: 0.86 k/bb: 1.89 go/ao: 1.57
5. Angels - Sean Rodriguez, U, 23. AAA. OPS: 1.042
6. Angels - Baudilio Lopez, sp, 17.5. Dom k/inning: 1.24 k/bb: 4.65 go/ao: 1.45
7. Rangers - Tommy Hunter sp, 22. AAA k/inning: 0.65 k/bb: 3.12 go/ao 1.29
8. Rangers - Elvis Andrus, ss, 20. AA OPS: 0.717
9. Angels - Brandon Wood, ss/3b, 23. AAA OPS: 0.971
10. Rangers - Derek Holland, sp, 22. AA k/inning: 1.04 k/bb: 3.93 go/ao: 1.20
Quick note: I started with the Rangers because they've jumped so quickly in organizational rankings over the past two years, and for good reason. After eyeballing other competing orgs, I'm fairly certain the Angels will stack up better against most every other team.

cycles
everything happens in cycles. the Rangers have been soo bad the last few yrs that its only time all those high picks would start to add up throughout the organization. the next thing to look out for is how many of these prospects pan out.

The Rangers
Always trade away their arms for bats anyway. I can think of 2 off the top of my head, Volquez last year and Chris Young of the Padres. Never can understand why they trade pitching away when it’s obvious they need some arms in Arlington.

Chris Young
They actually traded young in a deal centered around Adam Eaton. They don’t necessarily trade pitching for hitting but they are questionable in their selection of pitchers

does it even out in the end that pitchers are alot more likely to get injured?

Damn near all pitchers end up with some sort of issues (injury)
Whole idea is to try and figure out if it will be sooner then later. Thats why Peavey worries me having been on the DL with arm issues and throw in the fact he is a small RHP that relies on a power pitch it gets even scarier . Not a lot of those guys running around. Check the MLB rosters for 6ft under RHP that are hard throwers. Not a lot of them Pedro Martinez in his prime but then the list gets short.

Evaluation is the same for Pitchers
Strike zone may differ from time to time but when evaluating pitchers your always doing it from 60ft 6 inch. Radar gun doesn’t lie. You can see tight spin on breaking ball along with the depth. You can see arm side run and boring action on a fastball. You can tell by velo on breaking pitches if there is more fastball then your seeing. Pitchers body and arm action is visible From the time a team(scout) sees a pitcher he is evaluating him from the same distance doing the same thing.
When a team(scout) sees a hitter he is seeing him with aluminum bats. Some guys have aluminum bat swings and never figure out the swing needed with a wood bat. Trying to determine if the position player will have power with wood while he is using aluminum is tough at times. Like trying to see if the guy painting your house is the next Picasso. Just because he has a brush and paint doesn’t mean he will be one of the best artist.
Doesn’t mean you can’t be wrong with pitchers a lot has to do with stuff they have but a lot has to do with what they have inside of them as well. This goes for all players. That is why it is so important for the team to gain knowledge of the player on the field as well as off it.

Hitters
what about college/high school guys that get drafted soo high. is it because they showcase their skills with a wood bat for the scouts to see during simulated game/or some live hitting situation to show them they can hit with a wood bat to show them they can make the adjustment from aluminum to wood bats?

Exactly
I know an organization that drafted a player with there first pick based on the pre-draft workout at the stadium 2 days prior to the draft. A lot of teams have scout ball teams and have the high school players play using wood bats during the fall/winter.
The Cape Cod League is one of the highly scouted summer leagues and a lot of the reason for that is because they get to see hitters use wood bat all summer long. Many scouts will work out kids prior to the draft using wood bats and sometimes this takes place after a game when the supervisor for the organization needs to see a guy because he didn’t see the player swing it all day due to BB.
