Garrett Atkins?

It's been long rumored that the Angels are interested in dealing for Rockies 3rd baseman Garrett Atkins. And once again, the rumors are flying. What do you guys think about this? Personally, I think it's a bad idea. He would be a massive power upgrade at third but he'd be a huge defensive downgrade at third. If we did acquire him, maybe instead of moving Figgins to left, we could keep him at 3rd and maybe experiment with Atkins in left, much like the Brewers did with Ryan Braun. That worked out well for them. But Atkins' numbers away from Coors are rather disturbing. In 2008 he batted .342/.380/.523 at Coors Field but just a dismal .233/.278/.383 on the road. The only encouraging sign is that 12 of his 21 home runs did come away from Coors. So the power is legit but the hitting isn't. I'm afraid that his line might resemble the road split of 2008 more so than the home split if he played in Anaheim for the Halos. Also on one last note, his walks have gone from 79 to 67 to 40 in 2006, 2007, and 2008 respectively. He had 602, 605, and 611 ABs respectively in those 3 years so the reduced walks is not a circumstance of fewer ABs.

So to sum it up, I don't think Atkins is the big bat to get us over the hump, whether we keep Tex or not.

Oh, I guess you did

I scoured through the old fan posts and there was a similar post 15 days ago. My bad.

No, no, and also no

He’s a lousy defender, and his offensive talent is a Coors Field illusion. Put Wood at third, Aybar at short, and use the money you’ll save on signing Teixeira and designing AL West championship banners.

AL West banners

can be made without Tex.

Lousy defender does not even sum up how inept he is.

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.

Well I'm glad to see my fellow Halo fans agree with me..

Let’s just hope management eventually comes to their senses.

Repost but the message hasn't change

Hell freakin no! Atkins is NOT the right choice for the Angels. I would rather see Adrian Beltre in an Angel uniform. At least we get a good defender with legit power.

Light up the Freakin Halo!

Lookout Landing promotes Beltre as a bonafide superstar.

It’s odd that a superstar has yet to post an OBP of .330 in four years with the Mariners. Must be bad luck. Four years of bad luck.

Maybe

Maybe Mrs. Garret from THE FACTS OF LIFE can play 3rd base and make those cookies Matt Welch is jonesing for…

At last, some MILF with those cookies!

You ever feel as if your mind had started to erode?

Atkins provides something though

Dont forget that Atikins can also play first base — which actually seems like a better position for him. So if we lose Tex and Morales doesn’t pull through then we can move Atkins over the first and re-arrange our infield in a number of different ways that could work.

Or if we lose Tex, we can just put Atkins at first and slowly integrate Morales as a bench player. I don’t think this is all that bad of an idea.

He is below average at first base as well

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.

i keep seeing tons of things

from reporters saying that we’re making a pretty strong push toward Atkins.

that scares me.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Nov 11, 2008 6:56 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

maybe

it depends on what we give up. no major league or top shelf minor league arms. he’s pretty inexpensive for 2 yrs as a stop gap until we can further evaluate our talent. if Tex fails, and we get no one else.

by HALO_86 on Nov 11, 2008 7:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

it would definitely be buying low

but home/road splits are scary. flat-out scary.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Nov 11, 2008 7:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

but maybe being home will somehow make him more consistent and better. i think sometimes we over analyze numbers and sometimes forget about the human element. i don’t know i just want a good team. with a chance at the WS

by HALO_86 on Nov 11, 2008 7:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i agree

it’s weird that his power numbers remain constant, but everything else drops on the road. maybe it actually does have something to do with playing in front of the home fans. i don’t know.
could he be a solid player for us? sure, he definitely could.
but, at the same time, i’d rather take my chances with Brandon Wood at 3B. he’s younger, cheaper, and more potent.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Nov 11, 2008 7:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

wood

i would rather put him at his normal position. don’t want him to try and adjust to a new position while trying to hit at this level.

by HALO_86 on Nov 11, 2008 8:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

he plays both very well

it really wouldn’t be an adjustment

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Nov 11, 2008 9:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

From what I understand

Wood started out as a SS in the minors but did play some 3B as well, even before he got to the bigs. And if you remember, there were times when he would come in for Quinlann at 3rd as a late inning defensive replacement so that tells me he’s very comfortable at either position. 3rd base isn’t new to him.

Someone posted a rumor during a chat at MLBTR

of Adenhart and another prospect for Atkins. That sounds like a good deal, and even though I think it’s a mistake, I think he’ll be in Anaheim in 2009.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

Sounds like an abortion of a deal to me.

Atkins sucks.

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.

What I mean by good deal is...

I’m not real high on Adenhart. If that’s all Colorado wants (+ prospect) for Atkins it’s a good deal, but not one I’d like the Angels to make. I’d be very happy with Wood at 3B, and happier still with Wood at SS and someone else at 3B…just not Atkins. For some reason I think the Angels are going to deal for him, and I think it’s a mistake.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

I'm not sure where to post this but....

I had a horrible nightmare last night that the Angels traded Chone Figgins to the Rockies for Willy Taveras.

I think I've been visiting MLBTR too much

because there was a post about teams interested in Rockies players, namely Atkins, Torrealba, and Taveras. And Chone Figgins has been named sparingly in minor trade rumors and used to play for the Rockies. So….yeah, your mind takes the ingredients and mixes them into a dream or nightmare lol.

We can put this garbage to bed. Thank god

Lyle Spencer “Inside Source”

As for Atkins, there are concerns about his road splits — his power numbers are greatly enhanced by Coors Field — and his range at third base. The Angels feel they’re in good hands at third base with Chone Figgins.

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.

by hauldog on Nov 12, 2008 4:21 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Figgins

only reason why i don’t like Figgins @3B is that he has no power. if we keep him there then thats 1 less potential power bat in the lineup. i would rather see him in left and get a another corner IF bat with power. if Teix signs or not. i want another power bat there. even if that means Wood @3B.

by HALO_86 on Nov 12, 2008 5:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I do not care where he plays with reference to Atkins

The little midget is a better player than Atkins.

Teixeira............Everything else can wait.
