Looks like it will take more than 6/$120m to land Tex
Two high-ranking baseball officials predicted that star free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira just might hit the reputed $200-million asking price.
At least two teams and perhaps more are believed to have already bid $160 million, and at least four teams still appear to be in the running. The Red Sox, Angels, Nationals and Orioles appear to be among the serious suitors for the switching-hitting star. Angels owner Arte Moreno told SI on Tueesday, "Teixeira's my guy,'' meaning he remained their top target.
Is it going to take 10 years/ $200m for Tex?

not worth it
Hes great, but this team isnt dealing out 200 million in contracts. We were the best team in baseball last year without him, we’ll be fine this year without him. Hes going to Boston. Take the money saved from garland, frankie, and teix and extend both lackey and santana. Then make sure we SIGN all of our top draft picks, give them what they want. No more blowing high picks on kids who wont sign.

"We were the best team in Baseball last year"
So I guess not even MAKING it to the WS, let alone WINNING it, is irrelevant?

Best team in baseball
Strictly speaking, is determined by record.
At 100-62, we had the best record in baseball and were, conventionally, the best team in baseball.

i thought the "best team in baseball WITHOUT HIM" part was kinda obvious
which would lead the logical thinker to assume i was referring to our possessing the best record in baseball before the trade was made while casey was having a down year.
and we didnt win a series WITH teixeira either. My point being, the angels as a TEAM are always going to be good, with or without mark teixeira

If you go by what Tex said he's looking for...
…Washington is not an option.
Didn’t he say something about playing for a proven winner or for a team that will contend? (I suppose “team that will contend” can be broadly interpreted).

Every rumor makes me more certain he is leaving
The East Coast “family reasons” bias is back and Arte is going to $200. Time to shift our focus I think.

Agreed
Each new “report” makes it look less and less likely. The unlikeliness of him resigning here compounded with the fact that we shipped off Kotch to get him is really starting to piss me off. Clearly the FO knew what they would be up against this offseason.
It would be different if things had gone the way they should have in October, but it is what it is and the fact of the matter is that U-Haul was nothing more than a monumental Halo dick tease.

I was listening to MLB on XM
this mroning and while the guy who broke the CC to the Tankees for 7 years and $140M (Ken Rosenthal I beleive) reported that both the Angels and the Nats have offered Tex an 8 year $160M deal.
It is way overdue Arte. #5 needs to be retired by the Angels.

Why
if it’s over 10 years, isn’t it the same as 4 yrs $80 million

Not at all. $200 million >>>>>>>>> $80 million
It isn’t the yearly average, it’s the total dollars at risk. That’s a huge chunk of money to tie up into one player. With long-term deals there’s always the risk that the player could be highly ineffective over the latter portion of the contract. But that liability is still on the books and drains resources that otherwise could have been used elsewhere. Think of it like the GMJ contract. Bet the Angels wished that had only been a 3 year deal instead of a 5-year anchor.

I believe he is worth the risk
He seems to be the type of player who is the professional hitter and from all reports I’ve seen his preparation is among the best in the game.
If Manny can still hit at 37, what leads you to believe that Tex is any different?

how about 9 years, $190MM and a vesting option for a 10th year?
Kotch would've had that.

yes, your math is correct sir
but 28 + 4 and 28 + 10 do not = the same #
plus, backloaded contracts would make those years latter years (10-4) much more expensive than 80 / 4

Texeira will
take who ever offers him the most money. They are all about the money. I do not care what they say to the media about the love or all that BS it is all the money. It is sad but true. In the end who ever gives him the 200 million will get him and that will not be the angels and it sucks, but hey life aint fair so you move on.

Exactly...
thats why CC signed for the 7/160 because the union pressured him to. It was the most he was gonna get from anybody and he took with their influence. Thats why the Yanks gave him that 3rd year opt out option because they know he does not want to be there and in a couple years 7 and 160 will be nothing compared to what will be getting thrown around.

It's being reported that the Nats are at 8/180
Looks like the Nats are in very hot pursuit. 22.5 per is 4m more than Torii per year.

Gotta' have Tex
If the Angels are going to win it all in 2009 (not just have the best regular season record) it’s going to take Texiera. This is the big bat that the fans have been promised for years. I’m willing to pay more for my nachos next year. Get it done Arte!

wasting time
We all know how this will end. So we need to focus on Manny now before it’s too late.
Whether you like the idea or not, he is what we need in the playoffs. Especially against Boston. That would be sweet. I love Tex but it’s not going to happen.
