Putz to the Mets
They are going to have one sick bullpen next year.
I like Endy Chavez, but I'm not so sure he's going to boost the M's into contention...

wow, this will be a solid bullpen
7 inning games as long as Putz bounces back this year.

I dont know
I can forsee Frankie giving into early New Tork pressure against a lineup like the Phillies and going into a skid
Putz will step into the closer role, KRod is super unhappy.
Should have accepted our extension.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

Mets become NL East favorites next year
they were a team renewed under Jerry Manuel after Randolph dragged them halfway through June with a .500 record. Underachieved all year, and still almost made the playoffs. Manuel couldn’t save that disaster of a bullpen, but these two moves have to put them back at the top…especially with that Philly rotation not capable of repeating its over-performance from last year (sans Hamels).

Mets
They are supposed to be the favorites every year and they always under-achieve. Now they have to deal with the World Series Defending Phillies. After a decade of finishing below the Braves, they are second to another team. They had to make a splash for the new stadium they open this year.
Bye Bye Ohio, hello Valencia!

The drastically over-achieving Phils, you mean?
Having crap for a rotation behind Hamels, and still pulling it together. Putting old scraps together for a bullpen, and it holding. Lidge suddenly not blowing a single save all year. Jamie Moyer acting 26 again.
It’s not happening again.
Randolph held the team back last year. They were a .600 team under Manuel, and the bullpen was the ONLY problem for them…it’s CLEARLY fixed now. So yes, obviously favorites.
And save 2007, and now 2008, I don’t see how they under-achieve every year, other than by ridiculous media estimates.

"Clearly"
Only insofar as Frankie and JJ avoid the potential injury-bug…

Okay
That’s useless speculation. Yes, obviously if the two best members of every team’s bullpen went down, they’d be in deep shit. Thank you.
K-Rod’s been once in six years. If he misses a game now and again, fine.
“Clearly” the Phils are only favorites if Lidge and Romero don’t both implode back to their old selves.

Clarification
Putz was on and off the DL all last season.
Many, many, many observers are preparing to shield themselves from flying bits of Frankie’s arm when it explodes. Every game he goes without destroying himself brings him steps closer to the big one.
So yeah—I’d say it’s pretty f—ing likely one or both of them goes down in 2009. For a while.

In fact
That’s probably a reason the Mets went in hard for Putz—best case scenario they have two elite relievers working in tandem; worst-case, they insure themselves, one against the other.

I've heard the K-Rod nonsense since before he made it to the majors
I know what you were referring to, but I’m not going to believe something until I actually see it…especially when it’s years late in the happening. He’s toned down his delivery some, he’s still extremely young, and not everyone with sloppy mechanics is ‘due’ to get injured as a result.
I just don’t see it at all being “pretty f-ing likely” that both guys go down “for a while” in the immediate coming season. We’re not dealing with two Kerry Woods here.

Prospects
Anyone know much about the prospects the M’s picked up? Chavez/Gutierrez don’t really seem me as the impact players that are push the M’s into contention, even if it really improves their defense.

The Mariners wanted quantity from the Mets rather than quality
Carp is a solid prospect at 1B, but has a lot to prove, and at higher levels.
Other than him: Vargas is proven MLB garbage. One of the other prospects if proven MILB garbage. The other is way too young to say one way or the other, but has proven nothing…but he’s an age 19 arm with decent upside.
Nothing to be scared of other than Carp, who could be like, say…a steady version of Lyle Overbay’s career years.

Carp can HIT
Have known the family and Mike for years. Wife use to babysit the kid. He has always hit but has been has been a guy with no real solid position but 1B.
Mets tried him at 3rd when he signed then thought maybe he could catch. That was a mess! He has played some OF but 1B is his spot as long as he shows the LH pop. Mets organization player of the year following his 2006 but he had health problems in 07 but he rebounded in 08.

i cant help but feel this will get REAL ugly for the mets
how is frankie going to respond to a closer looming behind him, ready to replace him after shaky saves?
The article even has Putz’ agent saying he absolutely does not want to be a set up man and that he wants to close.
So what if Putz dominates in NY while frankie has a shaky string of games?
Oh im sure the new york media and fans will have nothing to say about it….

Who gives a shit what Putz's agent has to say
I care what Putz has to say:
"It’s a new challenge and I’m excited about it,‘’ Putz said. "I’m going to a new team that’s going to be very competitive. Frankie’s a great closer and with Sean Green going as well, we should have a great bullpen.’’

Putz' agent...
… said he will not accept a non-closing position. A lot of nerve for a guy whose elbow is shot.

It's the Mets -- they'll still F it all up in the end!
And K-Rod will meet media scrutiny for the first time.
You ever feel as if your mind had started to erode?

This should put an end to Putz is the best closer in the AL West.
He is setting up for K Rod.

Correct he could not. Frankie would not sign to be a set up guy either
Agree to disagree they are out of the AL.

Doesn’t dominance require health, too?

I would think so
Putz dominated the hell out of the DL last year.
