Tex, Peavy, and Manny
Oh how things can change. My boy KRod just ditched us for pretty much the same amount we offered him. Tex could get close to his 10 year 200 mil. CC gone. The Elites remaining on the Block are Manny and Peavy. Unless, of course, you still want to go for Tex.
I am the type of person who loves to hear the latest thoughts from the Angel faithful.
1. Do you still want to go for Tex?
2. What would you offer in a Peavy trade?
3. What would you give for Manny?
All of a sudden, these have become important questions.
Although these questions have been asked before, things have changed.

We have not lost Teix
sorry the offseason lasts longer than a regular season game.
They are still negotiating.

In light of the recent circumstances
What are you willing to offer?
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

Nats offered 8/160
We would probably have to match that.
Sawk are working on a deal around that range.
We would have to match years and come very close to the money the Nats put down and definitely match years and exceed Sawk money.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

Nothing has really happened to our offseason plans
K-Rod was going to leave and I doubt we wanted him back at “Price”… let alone take money away from acquiring players we truly want, and neeed.
CC… good for him. I wish we had thrown an offer out there. Maybe we did, it just didn’t get published. But I have to tell you, when I saw what he’s going to make in an inning of work, it turned my stomach something awful. $111K for one inning of work. Over $700K for a win. You realize some people don’t make half in a year what CC makes in a 10 minute inning???? Jesus, it’s sickening.
Tex: Still available from what I can tell.
Manny: Fallback for Tex. Still available.
Peavy: I haven’t seen anything that suggests we’re major player. That does not neccesarily mean we are not. We may be bidding our time.
Dunn: Very much still available.
Basically, my bottom line, up front is the 2 big kids taken, K-Rod and CC, I don’t feel we were truly tracking on. Subsequently, the Mets got their 9th inning guy, and The Yanks got a SP to replace Mussina’s production last year. My opinion, no big deal. However, the Mets will be tough to beat… imagine, Johan goes 7 strong, hands the ball to Putz for the 8th, and to K-Rod in the 9th. That’s friggin insane.
But in answer to your questions.
1. Yes.
2. Weaver, Willits, Aybar, Mathis, (and Maybe Nick Green. Especially if all that was standing in my way of acquiring Peavy. I’d request a PTBNL as well… wait for spring to see who we like).
3. I’d give Manny 3 years $66M w/ a mutual option for a 4th at the same price.

I am happy to report on Peavy
that we are now in the game. I know I don’t have to give a link, by the time you read this you will have heard.

My take...
1. Yes. Of course. We’d be crazy not to.
2. Weaver, Kendrick, Aybar, and Adenhart. I would love to be able to throw in Gary Matthews Jr. as well but I doubt a rebuilding organization wants to take on a big contract, especially when the player in which the contract applies to sucks ass.
3. 2 years, 50 million with a 20 million dollar 3rd year option making the overall value 3 years, 70 million. I’d rather pay him bigger annual bucks than go for length. I know Manny is amazing but still at his age, he could decline or break down at any given moment.

I like the way you think
Of course, if we can keep Weaver………….

Though
my answer to number 2 is assming that we land Tex and because of the quantity and quality of the players we would be giving up, I’d expect to acquire Brian Giles along with Peavy to fill our LF vacancy and help our OBP. Of course, Manny does not come into the equation at all if we land Tex + Giles. I would then envision the lineup as follows:
1) 3B Chone Figgins
2) LF Brian Giles
3) 1B Mark Teixeira
4) RF/DH Vladimir Guerrero
5) CF Torii Hunter
6) DH/RF Kendry Morales
7) C Mike Napoli
8) 2B Maicer Izturis
9) SS Brandon Wood

Naked BP. Don't let the kids get to the game too early.

how do you still bat Napoli 7th?
he’s batting at least 6th, preferably 5th.
thats 30+ HRs coming out of the 5 slot… Torii isn’t gonna do that.
…like how that’s all i say? i love that lineup… minus the fact that there’s no Howie. :(
Kotch would've had that.

Napoli
hasn’t shown the ability to be a consistent hitter. He hit .270 last season or something like that but that was because he padded his stats in September with a ridiculous hot streak. I also like splitting up righties and lefties/switch hitters so there is not one extended stretch in the lineup that is all right handed or all left handed. That’s just my personal philosophy. I’d consider moving Naps up to the 6-hole but not the 5-hole. Not until he can stay healthy and stay consistent.
by Chzburger Jones on Dec 11, 2008 5:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
that comes with playing every day
and not being sat for a pathetic, useless sub.
Kotch would've had that.

Being sat for a "pathetic, useless sub"
is a result of being “injured” a couple times a year

so he don’t get hurt.

Naps is a perfect guy to DH when you want to give him a break from catching. Someone should mention that to Sosh.

but the DH is taken up by

I am the type of person who loves to hear the latest thoughts from the Angel faithful.
1. Do you still want to go for Tex?
Of course I still want to go for Tex. He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus, but I imagine we have a better shot at winning, then we do without him. If $160 for 8 years doesn’t get it done, maybe we can structure a contract that will give him some added benefits. Maybe incentive bonuses based on ALCS and WS performances. If the guy is performing he is worth the money. If structured correctly maybe we save when he isn’t performing.
2. What would you offer in a Peavy trade?
I think Peavy would make our starting rotation the best in majors. If you want the deal done, Saunders, Figgins, Aybar. Figgins could be plugged in anywhere, Aybar will add a MLB talent at SS and Saunders is Saunders. Great young pitcher, huge upside, and under team control for a couple of years.
3. What would you give for Manny?
If you want Manny you have to make it 3 years
by Jay Cal on Dec 11, 2008 8:09 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Im all for trading Saunders
he is so Jarrod “I had one solid year then everyone realized how mediocre my stuff is” Washburn
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
by PhiSlamma on Dec 11, 2008 9:15 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed
if we lose out on tex, i kinda see us freaking out and dangling Joe for garret atkins or peavy if hes still around. Whether or not either one of those is a good idea is debatable, it just wouldnt surprise me
by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 11, 2008 9:38 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
If we retain Teixera, I’d still make that trade. I’m not sure who San Diego would be more interested in, Weaver or Saunders. Saunders has a great year last year, he probably has more value, which means would could probably make the trade without giving up Wood. A starting rotation with Peavy, Lackey, Santana, Weaver, and Mosely I think is better than keeping Saunders and losing out on Peavy. If they’ll take Weaver, then let them have the Weave.
I’m not gung-ho about trading Wood. And if I were the ninja I’d try to negotiate Aybar over Wood. In fact, I’d give the Pads their choice between Aybar, Izturis, or S-Rod and a prospect.
Making my offer All Star Joe Saunders, Stolen Base Leader Chone Figgins, and Aybar/Izturis/S-Rod and a AA prospect.

hmmm
1. Teix i would offer the 20/yr for whatever the Angels want to offer. he would probably pass. move on, no tears.
2. Weaver, Ortega, S-Rod, Aybar, Willits.

I read today that the Padres might go for Wood, Adenhart, and Jepsen.
by CaptainCarlos on Dec 11, 2008 11:36 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Where did you hear that?
I’m not challenging it, just wondering what little birdie told you that so I can read up.
Being on the other side of this than you guys, I would say that that’s a better offer than what the Padres have been getting. But I would want Willitz in that package.
by THB on Dec 12, 2008 12:19 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You got a bucket of balls
and a couple of Greene’s old bats laying around? If so you can have Willits
by Seik1177 on Dec 12, 2008 8:56 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
sounds good, great actually
my only concern would be the bullpen. Wed have Oliver, Speier, Arredondo, shields, bulger? loux?. we need one more solid-good arm. Because if Shields/Dondo are setup/closer, then is speier our short relief? cuz i have a problem with that. But would we have the $$ for fuentes? Maybe sign Joe Beimel? id prefer adding 2 lesser prospects and keep jepsen though. Maybe like PJ phillips and uhhh Willits
Mr Moreno,
Please re-sign Tex.
Sincerely yours,
Halo fans everywhere

This birdie said
The Padres are believed to be seeking infielder Brandon Wood and pitchers Nick Adenhart and Kevin Jepsen in a package for Peavy, a 27-year-old right-hander who has $63 million left over four years on his contract.
Do it.

This is what I don't understand.....
You read rumors like this all the time involving other teams, and never their top prospect pitcher and hitter in the same deal. Why is it always with the Angels, they ask for the moon and then some. I used to think it was flattering, now I feel like it’s rape (or to a lesser degree, highway robbery, if you prefer).
by matt92130 on Dec 12, 2008 1:10 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm a little slow, admittably
The moon? One of the top 5 pitchers in baseball for these three guys? Do you know something I don’t (wouldn’t be the first time that happened).
