I found this interesting radio interview with Padres GM, Kevin Towers, over at gaslampball.com, home of the Padres fans. The interviewer is discussing with Towers all that went on at the winter meetings regarding trading Jake Peavy.
The interesting tidbit from this interview, from an Angel fan's perspective, is Towers says he met with the Angels, talked about Peavy, and the Angels said, "We will take Peavy, but we want (first baseman) Adrian Gonzalez too." Towers replied to the interviewer that if he went for that deal with the Angels, they would also have to offer him (Towers) a job because that deal would most likely get him fired.
Why were the Angels interested in Gonzalez?
Did they feel that at that point in time at the meetings, Teixeira was going to Boston, and wanted to cover first with Gonzalez?
Did the Angels plan to move Kendry Morales in the deal? Or some other deal?
Covering first with Gonzalez, and getting Peavy, the Angels could focus on a left fielder like Manny Ramirez or some other FA currently on the market. Could the Angels be more interested in Manny than they are letting on?
What was the plan in Tony Reagins mind when he had this conversation with Kevin Towers? Was Ninja just throwing this out there to see if the Padres would bite?
Whatever all this means, and it could mean nothing, but it allows a little interesting insight into what the Angels were looking around for in Las Vegas.
