JEFF BIGGS: Angels Make Teix 8 Year Offer
I am currently listening to Jeff Biggs (pictured) on AM 830, and he is reporting that the Angels have an 8 year offer out to Mark Teixeira. This report came straight from Angels GM Tony Reagins. No financial terms have been released, but there is a confirmed 8 year deal out!
Will Tex come here for 8 years? Has anyone come close to that offer, because as far as I've seen, 8 confirmed years is the longest deal.
What are your thoughts?

his last 6 starts of last year
4/26/08 @ Tigers 5 IP 3 runs 5k’s 2bb
7/13/08 @ A’s 5.1 IP 2 runs 4K’s 1bb
9/05/08 @ WSox 1.1 4 runs 0k’s 2bb
9/10/08 NYY 5 IP 2 runs 6k’s 3bb
9/20/08 @ Rangers 5 IP 3 runs 3k’s 1bb
9/25/08 @ Mariners 5 IP 2 runs 3k’s 1bb
Yes these are cherry picked stats but the team went 4-2 in these starts. That said I do think he needs to throw more strikes but I think he can be consistent given the opportunity.
One thing is for certain he is a CRAPPY relief pitcher

even when its getting to the point of being really risky?
exceeding our 8 year offer is probably not in the best interest of the Angels. This is a franchise that models itself after the Atlanta braves, they of the 11 straight division titles or whatever.
Longevity is achieved through looking ahead, not dwelling solely on the present. Worse yet, if you go heavy on the future and fail, not only did you not get what you wanted NOW, but you’ve made it extremely difficult for the future.
8 years is probably as long as our team can go. Having to pay teixeira 24 million in 2017 isnt going to be that cool if hes not effective, injured or both.
by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 13, 2008 4:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't want the Angels to be modeled after the Braves
Sure they got 11 straight division titles or whatever. But, they only got one championship in that time. I was very disappointed with the Angels’ 08 season. 100 regular season wins, but only one postseason victory. If that happens again next year it will be even more frustration.

i agree, i think we all have collective blue balls
but im just scared we(myself included) might be starting to take the success for granted. Its easy to say wed take 5 losing seasons for 1 ring now, but thats because we’re not in the middle of sucking.
Im a raider fan in football and can say wholeheartedly in hindsight that 10 years of .500 play would have made the team more satisfying to me than 3 great ones and 7 humiliating ones. Those good years were so long ago that they dont mean anything anymore.

look at the freakin Marlins. how lucky are those 20,000 die hard fans to have 2 championships, but with all
those losing seasons inbetween. i don’t want to be like that. of course it sucks that the Braves only won 1, but success is better then losing.

People Are Too Quick to Be Skeptical
If we could somehow get Mark back I think everyone would agree it would be one of the greatest free agency signings in Angel history however, not purely because we would be acquiring one of the greatest players in the game today. Signing Tex would have even greater implications in our quest to become baseball’s best because, finally our franchise would be able to say that they not only had a clear off season goal in mind but that they executed it, beating out the skanks and bosux. In doing so we would set the precedent that not only are the Angels the AL team to beat out West but that they are ready to become the MLB team to beat with an owner and management that is willing to get the job done.
Of Course, that’s if we get it done. (forgive me if my grammar sucks its late and the brews are starting to take their toll)

If the Halos sign Tex
what it really means is that the Halos have the cash to keep up with skanks & sux. My only concern with this is that Tex stays healthy. There better be alot of clauses in this contract and Tex better have to take some tough physicals before the beginning of each season to make sure he didn’t injure himself in the offseason.

You know
you are setting yourself up to feel like complete shit if he doesn’t sign. I’m still afraid he might be willing to take a little bit less to play out East.

Sad to say.

yeah but you cant be pessimistic the whole time
its a psychological move as well. we too can throw around the big bucks, and we’re lettting other teams know it. even if we dont get tex, thats a decent consolation.
by linkbruin on Dec 14, 2008 1:00 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Consolation?
Our consolation for not getting one of the best players in the game at a position we have a near-total vacancy is that other teams will know we have money???
Dude. That’s not nearly enough.

maybe immediatelty, but long term its good
if tex doesnt pan out, we’ll find a good option. of that im sure.

LA Times linkage
The Angels have offered an eight-year contract to Mark Teixeira, general manager Tony Reagins said Friday night. The contract would be the longest and richest in club history. The value could almost double the previous club record, the $90 million guaranteed last year to Torii Hunter.
Reagins declined to provide the value of Teixeira’s offer. The Angels are believed to have offered at least $160 million, matching or exceeding the highest offer so far reported for Teixeira.

If Tex signs,
who’s going to make up the new HH shirts with Tex’s face on a Million dollar bill with “In Panthers We Trust”.
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

The pic of Bigs offers a clue:
AM 830 is displayed proudly.
A = Artie
M = Moreno’s
8=Year Offer
3 = WS rings expected during contract
0 = additional offers from Angels to Tex

the guys on ESPN dont seem to think the 8 year deal is that impressive
tim kurkjskaoijan or whatever his name is doesnt see it even putting us ahead of the red sox. He thinks 180 million will be required. To put that in perspective, its more than twice the contract we gave Vladimir Guerrero.
Its not far off the contract that made the texas rangers the laughing stock of the league.
Personally? they can have him at 180 million if it gets to that. Thats asinine for a team with our income. They can afford to take the risk, we cant.

Gee...really?
ESPN talking heads weren’t impressed by something the Angels did? And gave props to the Red Sox. I’m not sure if that’s ever happened before.
Man, I hate that “network.”

as do i
it just get me thinking though. I love teixeira and want him back but 8 years is a really long time, especially when i start thinking about how his bat hasnt made a team good. The only winning team hes ever been on was us and it was because we had built with young talent and avoided these exact same kind of deals. It just makes me nervous

I'm starting to feel the same way
But, then I think about Tex protecting Vlad everyday in that lineup, combined with the great starting pitching. If the Angels could manage two championships out of the length of Tex’s contract (6, 8, 10 years, whatever), it would be worth it.

TEX and PEAVY
I’m keeping my hopes in check. I know the decision will come down to whether or not Tex wants to play on the West Coast. Same with Peavy re the American League. But this is what keeps me up nights:
1. Figgy
2. Aybar
3. Tex
4. Vlad
5. Torii
6. Howie
7. K Mo
8. Naps
9. LF
1. Peavy
2. Lackey
3. Santana
4. Saunders
5. Weaver
With Fuentes, ‘Dondo, and Shields at the back end of the pen…. I’m not saying it’s going to happen. But if it did…and it could, friends, it could…we look every BIT as good as the freakin’ Yankees and darn sight better than the hated Red Sox. Anyway, it’s fun to think about.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

id put howie 2nd, aybar last, and move KMo and Naps up 1 spot.
And insert Evans into LF (If we got dunn for that, wow, but peavy/dunn/tex aint happening were not the skanks or the sux)
so
1. Figgy
2. Howie
3. Tex
4. Vlad
5. Torii
6. KMo
7. Naps
8. Willits/Evans/GMJ
9. aybar
Mr Moreno,
Please re-sign Tex.
Sincerely yours,

Too many K's...
…for Howie…but I’m not gonna argue that hypothetical lineup. If it happened, Scioscia could bat Vladdy 9th and I wouldn’t argue. Well…ok, maybe I would…

I think Howies gonna make a step forward. And he averages 96 Ks per 150 games
Which isnt terrible, but not great. If he could cut that down itd be great. As long as he can recognize the slider/curve and either hit it or lay off it, then hell be great. Also, according to B-R Kendrick rarely strikes out when facing the starting pitcher for the first time (19%)
Mr Moreno,
Please re-sign Tex.
Sincerely yours,
