K-Rod says we're really relaxed fans

"In Anaheim, they're more calm," he said. "They're really relaxed when they're watching the game." K-Rod

Star-divide

We were never relaxed when he was on the mound. I'm glad he's gone.  Jose Arredondo is going to be far better than K-Rod because he's less drama and price. Especially considering Arredondo's ERA was a stagering 1.62 last year with 55 strikeouts. I look forward to seeing him close up games without overdoing it with the emotion and base runners.

I take no offense to that

So our asses don’t tighten up every time we watch a baseball game…we’re watching men play a children’s game, it’s good to not take it too seriously.

Hear hear

Mountains out of molehills, this whole discussion is. And kind of disheartening, too, because it’s almost like it wound itself up into some kind of class-warrior debate or something.

It's one thing being relaxed...

and another thing being a downer. I have been asked to sit down in a close situation during a playoff game (I was at my seat, cheering).

I understand a good portion of that is So Cal culture, but come on!

agree with pretty much all you say

real sorry to see KRod go (Actually wore my Krod shirt yesterday in mourning), but looking at the buisness standpoint of it, the numbers just wouldnt work out if we were to get Tex and or Peavy, and if KRod had really wanted to stay, he would have at least negotiated our 3/34 offer.
But on the other hand, i heard a report that KRod before signing with the mets let Ninja make one last offer, but the team had moved on.
Am i sad to see him go, yes! am i going to miss him, yes. but letting him go was the right thing for the organization to do.
p.s. Anything that pisses off the Sux (white and red) and the As is perfectly fine in my book

Mr Moreno,
Please re-sign Tex.
Sincerely yours,
Halo fans everywhere

i agree that we're going to miss frankie next year

and i cant stand all the frankie bashing going around. it doesnt make sense. financially, yeah it was just not working out. production? cmon give me a break. we’ve had solid closers for a while now. the team spoils us occasionally.

but im not sold yet that we’re down the same first round exit road again. still a long off season, and then a long season after that. anything can happen. the market hasnt even played out yet. and tex hasnt inked with anyone yet. i think we should wait till all the pieces are in place and then maybe freak out.

The K-Rod bashing is ridiculous. This guy was an excellent pitcher for the Angels.

Unfortunately, some people seem to lack the ability to understand that.

Sigh.

6 months of great baseball and 100 wins >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1 week and 3 losses.

Quit your f*cking whining!

Good Stuff

I can buy that… we are already talking closer by committee. If we can’t sign Fuentes I say will roll with Shieldzy to start the year and groom Arredondo.

Okay Okay

So you are the guy I want to sit near during an Angel game. We can slap five and drink a few beers when the Angels are kicking butt. Not the dickhead, OC fairy telling me to keep it down while he eats some freakin sushi and rubs his wife’s leg. Jesus Cristo!!!!

Dude… I am just saying we will miss K-Rod.

Why go straight to the "you're not a real fan" bullshit?

I’m a lifelong fan and was born well before 2002. I’m fine with letting Frankie go. Yes, we was a great Angel, but that’s not the question.

The question is would he have continued to be a great Angel? His last two years, though still good, were a step down from his previous performance. Was he worth the risk of a high dollar long-term contract if this decline were to continue? I don’t think so. Especially after reading Arte’s comments a while back that there were three times he thought they reached a deal, only to have Frankie change his mind (the last time was right when Mariano Rivera signed his 3/45 deal). I’m with Arte on this one. You don’t want to be here, then don’t be here. Arte’s got my back for putting to an end the Jackie Autry “small market” mentality.

And letting Frankie go does not create a problem for us at closer. We have more than capable solutions in house. The only problem it does create is losing one of those arms that has been used in the 7th and 8th innings. Setup guys are just as important as the closer. Games are on the line in these innings, too. Frankie could have been a bit more valuable if he had the ability to enter the game in the 8th inning once in while with runner on base and help the pen escape from a jam. But he was our 9th hero raking up a worthless fake statistic.

K-ROD IS RIGHT

Angel Stadium is often (not always, but often) like going to a library – except when the lard contingent are singing along to Buttercup or screaming for the strike force to give them something for free.

Sorry, it is true. I have been in Oakland for a game where they were already eliminated and 12,000 people were more intense than 44,000 on Friday night in LA of Anaheim.

My trip to Oakland a few years back

I didn’t have the same experience. The A’s one a game late against the Angels and it certainly wasn’t loud.

Angel game in Oakland while in San Fran 2 years ago

I went to the game when the catcher (forgot who it was at the time, probably one of the molina’s) threw back the ball and K rod dropped it and Jason Kendall scored from third. Second most intense I have been to in my life (I have to unfortunately watch most of my games on TV).

Rev=Lame

Gee golly, this whole thread is lame. So let me contribute to its lameness. I believe that Frankie is right, we are relaxed. (maybe if he had cool intro jam like Trevor Hoffman instead of a song about frogs he/we may feel different.) This does not discount our love and passion for Halos. Yes, “Buttercup”, sucks dick, but please take in the context where the Angels play. The Halos play in the suburbs. Who lives in the suburbs? Families. Mom, Dad, Son, Daughter, etc… Some of us leave early, some of us don’t. And don’t give me the whole bandwagon shtick… Rev, don’t discount us because we don’t fit your cookie cutter uber-fan. If anything,we birth future Angels and fans.

Agree

Though I like to yell, cheer, and will confront those fans that are being a little too obnoxious while “cheering” for their Yanks, Sox, or Dodgers, I realize that the Angels core fan base lives and has grown up in the suburbs which helps to explain why most of the stadium is mellow.

People seem to overlook that most of these suburban fans have been socialized differently than those growing up in an urban environment. Probably to many of these Angel fans, they see it as a sign of disrespect to other fans in attendance to yell and scream. For fans such as the Yankees or Dodgers that have a strong urban fan base, it is seen as a sign of apathy to not cheer, jeer, or yell which to them is a sign of disrespect to the team and the city that they love. Also, for these fans that live in large metropolitan areas, they aren’t only cheering for the team that they love, but the city in which they live in. These sporting events in these urban areas end up having a strong element of a huge rally for civic pride while at the Big A the game is just seen as place to relax, spend time with the family, and show support for the team that they love instead of a becoming an emotional and perhaps political rally of civic pride for the city of Anaheim.

The Angel fans still love their team just as much as the Yankee, Dodger, and Boston fans do, but they show it differently mainly due to just living and growing up in a different environment. I am sure if Anaheim had the same amount of square miles as the city of Los Angeles and the Angels played in a downtown with 50 story skyscrapers, one way streets, little free public parking, cultural centers, genuine urban living, etc then the fans would not only have the sense of civic pride that LA, New York, SF, etc. have, but also the grittiness that comes from working and living in such tight quarters which in turn would make Angel fans more raucous when cheering.

Weak sauce, man

I have tinnitus, so I never hear silence. But that also means that I can suffer distortion and discomfort when the stadium rocks and I can tell you empirically that my human pain meter goes off quite often. Great basball + rally monkey + decent sound system + decent music – buttercup bullshit + great videos + constant fireworks = one great show! That it happens to wrap around an event that is historically defined as a lazy summer afternoon well spent, merely means that those interludes of quiet contemplation are a welcome, temporary, respite.

Is it The Burgundy Room? Nope. But then, it is not supposed to be. It’s friggin’ baseball after all.

i appreciate the fans not micromanaging and microanalyzing the team

but i want more emotion in the stands for the ball gamerather than just some stupid, lame-ass song (buttercup) or for some free stuff. angels game are more like social gatherings. id rather have it how it is than say the attitude of new york fans. but the passion is sorely needed.

K-Rod is a historically great pitcher

Look at his career H/9 and K/9 rates, and compare them to anyone who’s put on spikes. The chances of Arredondo matching that is somewhere very close to zero.

If we sign Fuentes at 3/30, while letting Frankie walk at 3/37, that will reflect badly on management. Unless they know something important that we don’t.

by mattwelch on Dec 15, 2008 5:21 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Like him already being hurt....

The guy didn’t want to throw his best pitch (his slider) at all unless he felt he had to. He’d rather throw fastballs or consecutive changeups. The slider puts the most strain on his arm. Coincidence? We shall see.

Classy, in my mind. I will miss Frankie and his finger-pointing and tons of saves and everything else that went along with #57.

Frankie Haters will be begging for him to be here

Arredondo looked great this year, but he’s got to do if for many more to matching Frankie’s numbers. Heart attacks aside, we were spoiled by his success over the years. And I think by July the Frankie Haters will be surprised by how much they underestimated how easy it is to close a game. Yes, the Closer is overrated, but the FHs have taken saves too much for granted.

by yeswecan on Dec 15, 2008 11:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

yeah right

more like he was Spoiled by the teams success. its not underestimating what a closer can do its that any competent arm can go out in the 9th take 3 outs. how many of his saves came with a 1 run lead?

puts up a few blowouts this year and cuts down on those 1-run affairs that were so prevalent in 2008.

Frankie's Success

We all know how well he did in Anaheim.

A big part of that success is due the bullpen he had in front of him. There is no reason to believe that there will be a huge drop off between what we got out of him last year, and what we will get from unnamed closer A this year.

I for one am going to get to watch the New York media jump all over the K-Rod signing because they aren’t going to get to him more than 40 times over the next season. They may have Putz for the 8th, but who do they have before that?

Yeah, the guy had 62 saves last year, but he had 8 blown saves and couldn’t get it done in October. He is going to long for the days of laid back fans if he blows 8 saves in New York and can’t deliver when it counts.

Angel fans may not cheer from opening pitch to final swing, but they cheer when it is appropriate, and they show up for the games, which is way more than can be said of most teams.

by Jagsnoot on Dec 15, 2008 2:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

With K-Rod

gone, let’s face it….there is a good chance that next season is going to have disappointments in the saves department. It is all part of the growing pains of a 2nd season guy in ’Dondo. It is not that often where you have a special player like Frankie who was consistant as he was. Unless Shields, ’Dondo, or whoever we sign makes a seemless transition, than we all need to be a little patient.

As for Angels fans being relaxed. I would have to agree that is just part of the laidback SoCal culture. And I would have to agree that it can be a little frustrating at times to see a lack of passion or could it be…lack of knowledge of the importance of a game when the crowd is too quiet.

Should the Angels get Tex, that would put us with damn near the same offense we had last year. More importantly, should the Angels sign one more major bat….dare I say…..Manny, then next season is going to be rockin’. With additional offensive power like a Manny or Dunn, the Halos will be improved offensively (hopefully enough) to take the saves load off of whomever we plug in at closer. We currently have enough proven pitching to not be concerned. That is why this offseason is about spending millions on PROVEN offensive power. And it is all still there for us to get. See Tex & Manny

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

no closer...

… is worth that $. I long for a return to pitchers who complete games, no closer needed. Pitching takes stamina, not this go out and throw as hard as you can for 3 outs crap.

by and1mcgee on Dec 16, 2008 2:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

honestly

we are relaxed fans… the only time when we get a little hyper is when were losing and the rally monkey comes up.

if u go to dodger stadium, that place is full of excitement, constantly playing songs, fans cheering..

i always wanted angel stadium to be more like that…like more exciting other than that angel stadium is the best park in the country :]

I am not offended at all by Frankie

I am sure he is hurt at the ways things went down with the Angels. People say things that are crazy when they aren’t thinking rationally and are overcome with emotion.

by stolenbases on Dec 18, 2008 10:34 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I'm not a Frankie hater, I'm just glad hes gone

lets face it, K-Rod hasn’t had a great post-season since 2002. That home run he gave up to Manny with the game tied in the 9th in Oct ‘07 made my heart sink. His stats are amazing for any closer, but he is also highly overrated. I’ve watched him blow games against sub par teams multiple times over the years. It will be interesting to see what happens with him in the NL East now. Good luck Frankie, you’re going to need it.

As for relaxed. I understand the laid back SoCal attitude, but not at a sporting events. Dodger fans erupt at every hit, as do Chargers fans for every 1st down. Even the suck ass Raiders provide some much needed enthusiasm at all their games.

I know that everyone has a different take on attending Angels games. As for me, every time I step foot into Angel Stadium my heart skips a beat. I’m not saying that should happen for all of us. What I am saying is just because we’re in the middle of suburbia doesn’t mean we can’t have enthusiasm. I hope this post helps us all step it up a notch at the games next season for the best team in baseball.

All I want for X-Mas is Manny...and if its not too much to ask for Tex.
