Scioscia asked Francona about Manny

So it seems as though Manny being the Halos plan B could be more than just a rumor. According to reports, Mike Scioscia asked Boston Skipper Terry Francona about what it's like to have Manny in the clubhouse. This could actually hurt our chances at Manny if we lose out on Tex since I'm sure Terry doesn't have the greatest things to say about Manny. Also, he wouldn't be too thrilled in campaigning one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball to the Angels, a rival American League power. But on the other hand, this can put some theories to rest which stated that Manny was in no way a "Mike Scioscia" type of player. Scioscia is clearly interested in Manny, otherwise he wouldn't be asking about him. Perhaps if he wants a full perspective on Manny, he should make a phone call to Joe Torre.

well

i know we’d only give him 2 or 3 years. Is there any possible way the dodgers let us take him away? Their fans would burn down the city.

They already offered him some ridiculous annual salary short term, im pretty sure we wont be able to match

I'm very close to calling a moratorium...

…on all things Manny. My fingers are tired from typing so much about why he’s horrible for our team.

I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

Dude

You’re in the minority, I’ll say you’ve put up a good fight, but I think we all have different views on Manny.

Personally I think Botox brought the “Manny being Manny” by not dealing with the situation years ago. I also think Manny knows Scioscia/Management is not afraid to discipline players when they get out of line.

That said I would like to sign Manny as a DH only because I still have that image of him slidding/tumbling/gropping for the ball in the outfield stuck in my head.

i’m on the manny wagon because the dude can hit and it’s not for 8 years.

reading your "report"

Scioscia has to know that he is asking the “competition” when he questions Manny’s past. Scioscia is a very headie guy who can read between the lines. Asking Torre is the same thing.

Manny has been around long enough to manage himself. When Manny doesn’t follow directions, Scioscia meerly needs to keep words to a minimum and “Relate” to Manny in a way that he responds to. Whatever Scioscia does, he cannot give Manny special rules.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

In a way that "relates" to Manny?

so give him a spanking, and no dessert for a week? Because I think that’s all that would work with him.

you may be on to something.

All along, that was all he needed !

If Tex went to DC/BAL

and we signed Manny to an expensive short contract, I think the offseason would be an absolute WIN.

But ArkAngel does not want to talk about this.

funny

but that actually makes sense…and is dead on for several reasons. Manny is a better hitter than Tex; we’d be stuck with only 3 years rather than 8; manny makes everyone else around him a better hitter; manny is a winner (maybe not really tex’s fault, but it’s still a fact).

Go Angels!

exactly

that’s why i’m saying the dude can rake and it would be short term. i think we’d be happy with another ring and a few manny moments in 3 years.

I don't know

I like these reasons and would love having Manny on the team—but I can’t shake the feeling of how this would play out in the public eye: the only way the Angels could get back to the Series and best the Sawx is by getting the Sawx’s best hitter? That just doesn’t sit well with me.

I.e.,

It wouldn’t be like we put together a better team than the Sux—just that the only way we could win would be by getting Manny to singlehandedly bring us to the golden land…that’s why the Dodgers’ playoff performance felt empty to me—the only reason they did it is Manny put them on his back, not necessarily because the team was all that good.

Sometimes that's what you need

to win a Championship. Would you rather be a Cubs fan who knew in the back of their mind that their team was better than Dodgers despite losing, or would you rather be a Dodgers fan who gets to celebrate a post-season series victory? Do you think Cardinals fans don’t treasure their 2006 WS title because they only won 83 regular season games?

Yankees got their best pitcher

and won a few rings. i never heard any belly aching over clemens joining the winning side. if you can’t beat ’em, get ’em to join you.

If we don't get Tex

I would like to have Manny. But, I having a feeling we are not going to be talking a 2 year 45
or even a 3 year 65. More than likely it’s going to be something like a 4 year 85/100. He’ll be the last great hitter standing. That’s what he and Boras are waiting for. I don’t think I would go for that.

Remember, +30hr +.300avg +120rbi +400obp don’t grow on trees. One thing is for sure, it sure will be interesting to see what Boras finally gets for Manny.

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

Forgive the length of this rant

I’m very, very torn over Manny. On the one hand , Manny is representative of the modern spoiled athlete. A spoiled, me, me, me attitude that hustles when he wants, and who puts himself before team. And I certainly understand others apprehension at signing a player who embodies what we consider to be “the guy from the other side”. I fully believe that a team is built through great scouting, drafts, and wise FA signings. And there is a comforting, albeit rather fleeting, feeling that comes from knowing we are not the skanks, bosux and mets. That our players, are, our players, that we don’t try to buy rings, that we practice patience with young players, and don’t open up the checkbook for every Pavano and Knoblauch that happens along. However, the question remains, do we continue taking the moral high road, and lose in the first round, or sign a guy that may be hard to stomach, but help us advance in post season play.

YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....

Knoblauch? Knoblauch? Wow - a man with a memory!

I remember riding the subway in NY way back when – when the news of the NYY re-signing Knob to a $6 million contrac was announced. I thought that was the worst move in the history of over-paying anyone.

That is, until HGH got the $50 LARGE from Stonehead.

Manny doesn't guarantee advancement.

I’ve said way too much already about how much I don’t want Manny. But last year we had Tex and STILL didn’t advance. I just think the playoffs are their own thing. There is luck, there is momentum, there is the fact that either team can win a short series. Just get there (and we will) and see what happens.

I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

by ArkAngel on Dec 16, 2008 9:14 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing

guarantees advancement. But players like Tex and Manny would increase the chances of advancement and that’s all you can ask for and that’s why the Angels should look at signing one or the other.

by Chzburger Jones on Dec 17, 2008 10:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i might

be in the minority but i would take the moral high road. i can’t stand guys like Manny. if he wakes up on the wrong side of his bed one day decides to be a prick, it doesn’t matter if the other 24 on the team are good guys. 1-2 players get pissed or infected with his selfish play and that would be the end of a good thing.

there’s only 2 garantees in life. life and death. everything else is up to each individual. Manny won’t change, like you said modern day spoiled athelete

Get Him Now!

I say we offer Manny three years, 65M. We would still have money to go out and get a nice pitcher for our 5 spot in the rotation.

I agree with dangling Figgins to see what we can get in return. Could we package Figgy and Adenhart for Peavy?

I’m all for it .

All I want for Christmas is Mark Teixeira and Jake Peavy as Angels in 2009.

I heard the conversation went like this...

Scioscia: Is it true that Manny wipes his ass with hand towels?

Francona: Where in the world did you hear that from?

Scioscia: Well, there is this blog called Halos Heaven…

Francona: You blog Mike?

Scioscia: Not often, but I like to read what the fans have to say from time to time, and I read that Manny wipes his ass with hand towels.

Francona: Yea, it’s true; flooded the clubhouse once! They don’t flush on the plane either, so he stuffs them in the trash. That’s why he had his own bathroom on our plane.

Scioscia: Wow, that is truly "Manny being Manny" huh?

Francona: Yea, well I imagine you heard about the travel secretary being pushed over, but we made up the thing about the tickets. Actually, Manny was pissed off because the travel secretary told him we wouldn’t have the Egyptian cotton towels on the plane for him to wipe anymore, they were backordered and we only had regular cotton.

Scioscia: So if we sign him, I guess we had better have a large supply on hand.
