K-Rod's new role in NY: Closer (70% of the time?)
Met's manager, Jerry Manuel said this to the press after the press conference where K-Rod was introduced as a Met:
"I do think that if we are to be where we expect to be, we'll have to have more than one guy save games."
He went on to say that Putz would be available when K-Rod had been over used, but also said the following:
[K-Rod] doesn't have to save, say, 75 games. The other guy [Putz] can save 35, whatever. That's big for us."
Anyone think that K-Rod's feathers will get ruffled a bit if this becomes a situation where there isn't a set-in-stone closer and Putz blows a save when K-Rod is totally healthy?
Anyway, I immediately thought this was a stupid thing to SAY publicly, but probably a pretty good idea in practice.

When they signed Putz
I thought it has the potential of problems all over the place. Then again, we will have to wait and see but these are the Mets.

Makes sense
What Manuel is saying is K-Rod doesn’t have to go out and save every win for the Mets. he plans on trotting K-Rod out is his closer, but on certain days, he’ll turn to Putz as well just to give K-Rod a break.
With K-Rod a possible injury risk at any time [as I’ve heard during his career in Anaheim], pacing him out to be used for a full season makes sense, instead of turning to him for every save opportunity.

K-Rod's new role: The New York Press's whipping boy.
After a few heart attack-inducing save opportunities, the press’ll have a field day.

If Putz
Came to the METS w/the notion that he was going to be anything other than the setup man, then he’s got a problem.
If Jerry wants to incorporate him into the B-closer role to give Rod a break every now and then, I don’t see the problem. Rod knows he’s the man and Putz should know his position as well. To make more of it than it really is, is simply derisive conjecture…at this point.

You're probably right, Lou...
but as someone who has watched Frankie since he was 20, he will go ballistic when he is passed over for Putz – even if he has thrown 3 days in a row.
Also, dollars to donuts, Putz is the better pitcher in 2009 if both are healthy. I’m talking rate stats here – WHIP, K/9, BB/9, etc.

Putz and his one good year are not better than Frankie,
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.

Comprehension, my friend.
If both are healthy, I think chances are Putz will be better in 2009 with regard to rate stats: WHIP, K/9, BB/9, etc. What that translates to on the field will depend on how Manuel implements his new tandem.
