I want my MTV (Mark Teixeira Vision) on the Halo-Tron
Despite every other major news outlet taking John Henry at his word, Kex Rosenthal over at FoxSports.com STILL believes that Boston is going to end up with Mark Teixeira.
With nothing more than simple conjecture, Rosenthal doesn't know who will sign Big Tex, but his "Best guess is that it'll be Boston"
- That's the "best guess" Rosenthal can take? WHY?
Why doesn't he and almost every OTHER baseball reporter across the country come out and say these three things:
1. I haven't been in the room, so I really don't know what's been said.
2. Since I haven't gone to the "anonymous team source" card, I'm just venting my opinion because I'm just another lemming who thinks that Boston and New York are sexier places to play than Anaheim.
3. John Henry said 2 days ago that Boston wasn't going to give anyone else a 10-year deal and yesterday he said that the team is out of the running. But I'll have the courage to write that John Henry is liar.
Here's my simple conjecture and best guess because I left my "anonymous team source" card in my glove box: The Red Sox are out because Tex either wanted 10 years or more money than the Angels are offering.
Never have I seen a free-agent situation when people knew so little, but hoped for so much. Let me join that crowd, except I hope to hear "I Wanna Rock" and then "First Baseman Mark Teixeira!" 81-94 games at Angel Stadium for the next 8-10 years.
Yes, Virginia, there IS an Santa Claus and his name is Arte Moreno.

I want to see him in 81-95 games at Angel Stadium in 2010!
by MH252525 on Dec 19, 2008 8:41 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
It can only be
81-92 games.
81 regular season + 3 ALDS ( hopefully just 2) + 4 ALCS (hopefully just 2) + 4 WS (hopefully just 2).
Thats 81 + 6-11 or 81 (or 87) to 92.

Plus....
2 Exhibition games are possible, and the 2010 ASG which adds 3 more…

Don't forget a tie-breaker...
That could add another 1 or 2 games

Can a tie-breaker add 2 games????
I know teams have had to play 2 games after the season but does the first game HAVE to be a makeup of one of the original 81? But yes I agree with you, the tiebreaker could bring it up to a max of 96 games in 2010

I guess I was wrong, It could be 3 according to the rule book!
Excerpts from MLB Rule #33
Scenario #6: If four Clubs are tied for first place in the Wild Card (or Division) with an identical winning percentage at the conclusion of the championship season and the tied Clubs do not have identical records against one another in the championship season, the tie for the Wild Card (Division) shall be broken as follows:
The four teams will be designated Club"A," “B,” “C,” and"D" based on a draw by the Office of the Commissioner. Club"A" shall play Club"B" at the ballpark of Club “A” and Club “C” shall play Club “D” at the ballpark of Club"C" on Monday, September 29. The following day (Tuesday, September 30), the winner of these games shall play one game, at the ballpark of Club “A” or Club “B,” whichever has won the game between the two. The winner of the third game shall be declared the Wild Card.

My interpretation of that is 2 games
A plays B
C plays D
A/B plays C/D.
So I guess that brings us to 97 games Tex will play in Angels Stadium in 2010….
2 preseason, 81 regular, 2 tie-breakers, 3 DS, 4 LS, 4 WS, and the 1 ASG.

That has to be a 4-way tie in the AL West.

people are saying he'll end up in boston
because they never said “we’re out”, all they said is that according to these mysterious offers that Boras claims Tex has on the table (not from us), the red sox dont think theyll be winning if they have to top the Nationals or Orioles’ offers. Which they dont have to and they know it. They know Mark isnt going to play in Washington and basically fall off the grid because of 10 million dollars. Theyre calling the bluff and theyre right for doing so.
Translation: We want you at our price, not yours.
People misconstruing this as sealing the deal for the Angels arent reading it enough. The Red Sox offer is higher than ours. They arent pulling their money off the table and allowing us to now get him for less than what they wanted….theyre just refusing to go any higher, something we already did (effectively ending our pursuit)

then what's with those comments by Torii
about Moreno doing something fabulous and blowing other offers out of the water????
by MH252525 on Dec 19, 2008 9:32 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
well Torii sounded like he had talked to Tex, which would make
far less speculative than anything Rosenthal says….
by MH252525 on Dec 19, 2008 9:48 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, you are right...
I read that Torii had been “texting” with Tex (is that called Teixting?)…
But, I wonder why Torii would go to the media revealing that kind of intimate detail?

by Downing Rules on Dec 19, 2008 2:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
i think torii misunderstood what the reporters told him as US having made the bigger offer
when really it could just be Washington or even the Yankees. The LA Times said that people close to the negotiations said our offer is significantly less than Boston’s and it also said Boras hadnt been in contact with anyone from the Angels or Orioles yesterday.
Torii knew nothing about Boston’s comments until the reporters told him and he probably just assumed WE were the ones who topped their offer. Reagins sounded similarly surprised so I highly doubt it was us
by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 19, 2008 9:56 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's not how I read Tori's comments
Didn’t Tori say that Tex told him that our offer blew him away.
by AMB07 on Dec 19, 2008 2:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
and we know their offer is higher because
Boston people are saying it is?? eff that.
the fact is, we have NO idea what the Angels’ offer is. NONE. nobody does… just because some people “speculated” that it’s “at least $160MM” doesn’t mean it is. and, based on that speculation, they’re further speculating that the Sawx have offered more, when again, they have no effing clue.
let’s wait until the numbers come out before we abandon ship, shall we?
Kotch would've had that.

And I know why it hasn't been leaked
Arte has promised Scot that if he can keep his mouth shut, than he will gaurantee Scot that the Halos will be just as serious with their offer to Manny as they have been with Tex.
Manny & Tex have more than just Scott in common. The also have the only team that has publicly stated they are very interested in both of them….The Angels.
W.T.F. !!! Tell me how often a team has the opportunity to get 2 friggin’ offensive monsters on their team! Tell Me!!! So Arte is willing to offer the biggest contract in the teams history. Well, what the “F”, why stop there, get Manny while your at it.

You don't know who offered what...
so to say they outbid us is premature. All hypotheticals right now, no facts. The only thing we know for sure is the Angels offered 8 years in Vegas. Beyond that, we don’t really know do we?
I read that the Red Sux offered 184/8, then I read that a suxs official said that it wasn’t true. We’ll see.

How do you know
what the Angel’s offer is? How do you know what Bosuck’s offer is either? No official from either team has said what the dollar amount was. It’s all been speculation. Maybe ours is the highest bid. We’ll see. We can’t seal the deal either way.

Again - another great point
Really – if you’re gonna speculate – And without someone saying something, it’s ALL speculation -
Why not speculate and say Arte came out with an offer of 8/190?
We don’t know that he didn’t. What we DO know based on his past. He overpaid for GMJ. He overpaid for Hunter. Why WOULDN’T he overpay for Tex?

Teix
the Angels are already going above what he’s worth with their initial offer. he’s not worth anything close to what all these teams are offering him. so whoever does sign him are already overpaying for him.

i know
i’m saying if Teix took our offer then we would be overpaying for him already. so why do u feel Arte should go higher? If someone else offered more to Torii, he wouldn’t be an Angel right now. i like how the Angels operate. give a player a good offer and thats it. move on if its not good enough.

Here's a positive sign from Eastern Sports Pimping Network
You have to read down low – but as someone pointed out earlier:
1. An “unnamed source” – (I love that, just because the paper I work for doesn’t let us do that) – said Boston’s offer “was not close.” to the 8/$184 that was reportedly being offered.
2. John Henry told AP on Wed. that he was hesitant to sign a player for 8 years, let alone a 10-year deal
What does that mean?
That even IF the Angels “only” offered 8/$160 – that would be the best deal on the take in terms of money and years.

Check This Out!!
essentially, it’s this bold part…
“But after they arrived, they were informed that their offer to Teixeira — something in the range of $165 million to $170 million — was short by upwards of $20 million.”
more proof why you NEVER believe anything coming out of Boston. EVER.
Kotch would've had that.

I just saw this...
If its true I think we can all now make educated decisions on whether or not he is worth it.
"ESPN.com reports that the Red Sox were told it will take $184 million over eight years to sign Mark Teixeira.
At which point owner John Henry apparently decided to issue the statement that the Red Sox were stepping away from the bidding war. However, ESPN notes that as of Friday morning the Yankees had not made an offer to Teixeira and the Orioles had not increased their initial offer that’s believed to be around $140 million, so Henry may have been right to call agent Scott Boras’ bluff. Dec. 19 – 4:24 pm et"

Is it just me or...
Is this a bit ridiculous to anyone else? I mean, yeah I would love to have Tex back and I would HATE to see him go to Boston, but seriously – when you’re talking about $160 to $170, isn’t an extra $20 million just “chump-change”? In all honesty, this is kind of ticking me off on how Boras and Tex are playing this game. There are baseball fans that won’t be able to go to games this year, or who are struggling to keep their homes and pay their bills, and these two are squabbling over an extra $20 million? It just kind of puts a damper on everything in my book.
