3 years, $12.75M
The Angels announced Friday that they have agreed with free-agent outfielder Juan Rivera on a three-year deal worth $12.75 million.
Rivera, 30, played in 89 games for the Angels in 2008 and hit .246 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs. He had a big second half after playing sparingly in the first half, still recovering from a broken leg suffered in 2006 while playing winter ball.
Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August, er September, er October...? Miss ya Kotch, but Tex is THE man!
Wow, that's a steal in my mind.
Even if he’s our 4th OF for the length of that deal, I don’t think 4 million/year is bad for a team to have a guy like that come off the bench that can hammer the ball out of the park.
he's the starting LF, IMO
and when we sign Tex, he, Morales and Vlad will rotate in the LF/RF/DH role.
Kotch would've had that.

If we sign Tex
I’m trying to stay positive, but also realistic
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
excuse th optimism
Kotch would've had that.

Our fourth outfielder is owed $33 mil over 3
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.
This could be the best news of the offseason.
GA is gone.
Forget Manny, forget Dunn, forget Burrell.
Give Johnny Rivers his shot. He is proven and he has earned it.
I am stoked.
and a really good arm, too
Kotch would've had that.

new details
According to this article on Sportsline , Rivera gets $3.25MM in ’09, $4.25MM in ’10, and $5.25MM in ’11.
even better move now.
Kotch would've had that.
Other notes
Willits is now officially useless to the Angels. LF is now Juan’s not Chone’s. So Wood or Aybar is now blocked.
Willits, Wood/Aybar, ….. sounds like the beginning of a trade package if you ask me
trade Willits, Aybar and a prospect for a solid pitcher.
or trade Figgins and WIllits…
whatever the trade, just make room for Wood!
Kotch would've had that.

Wood?
I’m just asking here: Why do so many people still think that Wood should start for us? I mean, I understand potential. But his actual performance at the major league level has been wretched. I’m trying not to be too down on the kid…I know he’s young…but I just don’t get the extreme high confidence.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
Put up an .832 OPS with the Angels over a three week stretch in his second call-up
small sample size, but the potential is starting to show through.

Needs to be given a real chance ...
meaning that his “wretched” performance you speak of has been done in an entirely too small of a sample size.

Because of age curves
The guy hasn’t gotten a real chance. He will be 24 next year. That is still fairly young.
Witty .sig goes here.
A blessing!
Last day of teaching for 2 weeks, and I come home to find out Rivera resigned! Tis the season to be jolly. The rest of my life has been sucky, but at least mi amigo Juan is there for me. Add his 20+ homers as a full time player to Napoli’s 20 – 40 homers as a full time player, and sprinkle in a little Tex – my friends, we have solved our power shortage.

be sure to add a hypen or else he quit...
re-signed vs resigned.

Now he needs a referral to a better hair stylist

Brett Boone is his stylist.

The best part is
That my son won’t have to pick a new “Favorite Angel” for a few more years. For some reason he fixated on Johnny Rivers when he was 3 years old, and he’s cheered for him like crazy for the past few seasons. What’s more, Rivera seems to come through in games I take my son to. He got a double at the spring training game we went to last year, and we were there for a couple of his home runs in 2006 and 2 more last season.
Though the rational part of me wonders if we aren’t setting ourselves up to be a little righty-heavy in 2009….
And he can play 2B!
hellz yeah. Im glad that we retained Juan.
