What does the Juan Rivera signing mean?
Here are some thoughts on the Juan Rivera signing:
1. We have four starting outfielders now—Vlad, Juan, HGH, and Torii, so the DH/Outfield rotation is in full effect. Reggie will be on the bench I’d imagine.
(Side note: as much as we’d probably like HGH to be out longer, the estimates have him back in 4-6 months, since he had the surgery Nov. 4th, he should be back at the LATEST in May)
2. We effectively have said goodbye to Garret Anderson for sure now. No way do the Angels re-sign him now. While I’ve been critical in the past (mostly of his defense), I have a lot of love for GA. Thanks for the memories…
3. Kendry Morales will NOT be playing outfield anytime soon. So if the Angels resign Tex, he’d be at AAA or on the bench.
4. I hope this doesn’t mean Vlad is in his last year in an Angel uniform. He needs an extension and he needs to retire in Angel red. If the extension happens, look for Vlad to be the first Angel cap in the HOF. If it doesn’t happen, look for me to cry a lot.
So this begs the question of WHY NOW? We still have HGH tied up for 3 years, Torii for 4, and now Juan for 3. I hate to say it, but it looks like Vlad might be getting squeezed out. I really hope that is not the case, because I would rather have Vlad than Tex.
I think we should have at least waited for Tex to sign before inking this deal with Juan. I would have rather seen Kendry playing some outfield than Juan. If we sign Tex, that outfield picture is going to get VERY crowded. But maybe this is a prelude for trading someone…but I think it could only be HGH or Reggie, and who wants them now?

Steve Finley had a track record
GMJ’s track record is basically a list of every team in baseball and the date that they canned his ass.
And honestly, I kind of like GMJ. Not as a player, because I know he’s never going to produce for us to the level of his contract…but he’s been hated for being given the money from day one, when the blame really should have been on management for giving it…can’t blame him for taking it, that’s for sure. But he gets hated on more than anyone on the team…I’ve met him at spring training the last two years, and he was very friendly…signed autographs for kids, posed for a picture, and smiled and was chatty. Maybe other people have other experiences, but that attitude went a long ways for me.

Nothing about his performance on the field, but...
his autograph approachability at ST was “I’ll catch up with you guys later…” Uh, he said that about 4 times to my 3 under-10 years old kids. We never got one.
I hope with a new lease on life post surgery, he tears it up again, honestly.

HGH
was cool as a mutha f-ah to my boys at ST. The only players that were dicks out every player I spoke to were Vlad & GA.
Don’t get me wrong about Vlad, my boys love the guy, but he pulled something that was BS. GA is…..well, GA. Too Cool for School.
HGH and every other player was super accomodating.

I had the time of my life at ST 2008...
went during the first few days after the entire team had reported. It was amazing to talk to the players so intimately literally just them and my family. Great experience. Yep, GA and Vlad walked on by, but I have dozens of their autos already, so my kids were ok with not getting them there.

Means that one or more of Figgins/Aybar/Wood/Izturis are on the block
I think Kendry would get 140 starts next year even if Teix signs — between LF/RF/DH, you only have Kendry, Vlad, a fourth OFer (Rivera) and a hobbled suck-monster we’d love to bum out and trade (GMJ).
But unless you see a reason to keep Brandon Wood down on the farm, I think this means we’ve seen the last of Figgins. I still think we’ll likely trade for Jake Peavy….

I don't believe HGH is going to be ready for Opening Day anyway
What I do see though is way too much right hand power hacking with Vlad, Torii, Rivera, and Napoli.
We need a left handed presence or this lineup is going to be too lopsided.

Gary Matthews might show some value this year...
I wouldn’t give up on him yet, as I believe he was playing through pain last year. Just wonder why it took so long for him/Angels to let Rivera play unless it was GMJ trying to show his “value” by being a gamer?
by Downing Rules on Dec 19, 2008 2:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think he's washing his hands of him.....
but I do believe that the signing of Rivera makes GMJr think long and hard about waiving his no-trade clause in order to play for someone full time; he’s probably gone after 2009 anyway. Not coming back until May is an uncertainty. Willits is much more certain, with speed, OBP, defensive skills, lead-off capability. No matter who we signed or extended for the outfield, (even Figgins), GMJr is thinking a lot.
Ideally, Morales is a DH who can play 1B and some corner OF. Figgins is probably as valuable as he’s gonna get right now.

I understand your thoughts.
Ideally, we would trade Reggie for value. However, Willits is almost like a cheap insurance policy in case GMJr is still hurt/traded…..if Figgins is hurt/traded,…. if Vlad/Rivera is hurt,…….and occasional relief for Torii. Somewhere along the line we’re going to need some speed off the bench for PR or PH, and sporadic lead-off if Figgins is gone and Aybar possibly bombs…….and the way things are shaping up, we need some left handed batters, too.
I’m assuming GMJr & Figgins are gone after ’09. I see Bourjos on the team one way or another by 2011. What the hell do I know?

Which is why
this JR signing doesn’t mean the end of Vlad in the Big A. HGH is gone after this season. Unfortunately, whatever we sign Vlads ext to – just add $5 mil each the 1st two yrs of it for a true cost to keep him…cause that is what we will be eating per yr to unload to someone.

Exactly.
Reagins came in and immediately fixed Stoney’s last crappy move – the HGH signing – by signing Torii. Reagins has no loyalty to HGH and is waiting him out. Also, the money in the Rivera deal is crazy low. I can’t believe that they got him for so cheap.

Our OF is full. Unless we are trading someone (why would we trade Vlad or Torii and no one wants GMJ) we are done there. There is no more room.

More Faith?
I think they are confident they are going to sign teixeira now, since they would have gotten a bigger bat for LF if they thought he was gone.

because I heard you (Lackey) might leave if the offense wasn’t upgraded
by Downing Rules on Dec 19, 2008 5:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Signing Juan Rivera for so little ensures one thing:
By saving so much on LF, the Angels have more money for any/all of the following (should they so desire):
- Increase offer to Teixiera
- Extend Vlad
- Extend Lackey
The savings we got with Johnny will allow us to do A LOT of things that locking up that money in Manny, Dunn, or Burrell would have prevented.
by PitPerc on Dec 19, 2008 5:10 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
Although right now… I’m over spending over 180 million to one player, even if he could become the face of the franchise. This trade doesn’t affect the signing of Teix. I still think we’re in the holding patern we were in before this signing.
If Somebody else signs Teix, then there is still an option in LF. I believe Johnny Rivers was signed to play Left if Teix stays. And Right if Teix leaves. We still don’t have protection for Vlad’s bat. I think this is the year Vlad spends most of his playing time on the bench.
If we do not re-sign big TEX we go after Manny. Then its Reagins job to make some moves to land another top pitcher and some top prospects.
I still want Peavy, but could you imagine if we could flip a combination of Figgins, Mosley, Adenhart, Aybar, Willits, and or Mathis for Hallady or Peavy.
by Jay Cal on Dec 19, 2008 5:32 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I couldn't disagree more...
Vlad spending most of his time on the bench? I think with a repaired knee, he’ll be playing in more games than last year—unless you meant he’ll be DHing more often.
If we don’t sign Tex, I think we are out of the Manny derby. Juan signing means he’ll be playing. If he was going to ride the pine, he wouldn’t have stayed with us. Torii and Vlad aren’t going anywhere. The only way we would sign Manny is if we ditch HGH—would love to do so, but isn’t gonna happen.
I would love to land Peavy too. I think it would cost us Howie, but I’d probably still do it—even though he’s one of my favs.

I very much meant DH
I think Vlad will be hitting DH for the majority of the year, with a few stars in RF.
I think if we do not sign Teix or Manny then maybe we should kick the tires on Dunn. Using Dunn in LF, Morales at 1st, and Rivera in RF.

by snowhor on Dec 20, 2008 7:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep.
No way Ninja signs Rivera to this kind of coin to sit his ass down. Rivera will be in LF or RF in 2009 – 140+ games if healthy. I hope he can be a bit more patient and not press so much. He really seemed to try to do too much last year – hopefully his true level of talent is closer to 2006 than it is 2008.

If the Halos manage to emerge as the winner in this ridiculous Teixeira sweepstakes, it also means that Kendry Morales will be traded before the season begins.

Well...
I think if we sign Tex, then Morales goes to LF.
And in a perfect world we are able to trade off some middle infielders for a pitcher.
3B – Izturis
2B – Kendrick
1B – Tex
DH – Vlad
LF – K-Mo
CF- Hunter
RF – Johnny Rivers
C – Naps
SS – Wood

JR has been assured of PT...
that’s why he signed the contract. There’s no room for Kendry in the outfield. His last chance with the Angels depends on whether or not they sign Teix.
If they sign Teix, Morales is trade bait. Morales will live or die as a 1B in the Angel organization.

i disagree with you, and kind of agree with Jay Cal
I think Morales can be a corner outfielder, and probably will if we get Tex. Scioscia and Reagins have both stated that KMo is comfortable at the corners and that they’d play him there.
and to Jay Cal’s point… Rivera would stay in LF, KMo and Vlad would switch off between RF/DH, and if Rivera needs a DH day, KMo goes to LF.
Kotch would've had that.

That's the way that I'd like to see it happen, too...
I just worry about that ridiculous HGH Jr. contract.
Something has to give and, right now, it would seem that nobody’s interested in taking HGH off our hands. The outfield is full and Morales is in demand (and the odd man out).
Morales is one hell of a prospect but the combination of Teix (theoretically, of course), Rivera, and the albatross that is HGH Jr. would seem to put the squeeze on Morales.
I hope I’m wrong.

why he is pushing Tex to Boston. It works our perfectly for Boras because then he can start another bidding war between the Yankees and Dodgers for Manny, since we are effectively out of the Manny running now. Boras doesn’t care necessarily if Tex is happy in Boston or not.
