The Big Bluff, Boras, Boston, and everyone else
Apparently, the Red Sox have not left the Mark Texieria deal. As a lot of us have assumed, they are just calling Boras' bluff. Good for them and possibly bad for the rest of us. Seriously, screw Boras and bullshit tactics.
"Executives involved in the Teixeira negotiations, however, noted that Red Sox owner John Henry, based on the statement he issued to The Associated Press late Thursday night, did not unequivocally end talks about the first baseman. And executives from other interested teams fully expect the Red Sox to re-engage Scott Boras, the agent for Teixeira."

Everything is just a bunch of vague statements
Even the Angels when asked if they will increase their offer stated that they have made a fair offer. What does that mean? It sounds to me like they just might be willing to increase it if you read between the lines.

I agree
This is nothing new. The guys at ESPN are all backpedaling because there precious Red Sox are seemingly out of the bidding so they are just making up crap to keep their hopes alive. Henry told the media on Wed. that there was a limit to how high he was willing to go. He also said he did want to get into a bidding war. I believe Tori is in contact with Tex and his statements last night to the LA Times are telling. I think we will have decisions over the weekened or by Monday morning. I don’t know if anyone was listening to Jeff Biggs last night but he said he had heard that his wife did not like her experience at fenway during the playoffs and is not hot on Boston. The guy lives in Texas and as Rev has said this whole East Coast thing is media driven and urban legend.

I hope the Angels move on, they've signed Juan, now start making some moves
The Tex trade was a mistake. He was a rental that didn’t pan out. That’s not the Angels’ style. I was glad that he played well for us but we were building the team with the farm system and things were progressing okay. I was a big Kotch fan so I feel a bit burned by all of this. Boras is an idiot who runs teams around. Screw him. Let’s get two good players for the price of Tex, let’s sign Lackey to a long term deal. I might eat my words later but I have enough of Tex and Boras’ dramatics.

Disagree
That the Tex trade was a mistake. If you look only at the end result then it could be considered a mistake if you take the path that we exit in the 1st rd again with Kotch as well but Tex gave us a better chance to compete in Oct than Casey IMO. We have a solid young player behind him (KMo) that made him expendable. Reagin pulled an antiStoneman, rolled the dice and made a big play with lots of upside and I think it was the right move.
You are right – Boras is an ass who runs teams around to get the maximum dollars for his client but Reagins made the trade knowing Boras was his client and knowing what Boras was demanding from a contract pov – so this offseason is no shock to Reagins or Arte.

why does anyone think it was bad making the deal? Teix was a huge upgrade for the remaining part of the season over Kotch. no one can perdict the future. you make calculated moves based on what you know you have in your system. even if Teix isn’t re-signed it was still worth it.

We need to stay positive?
Everyone needs to keep a little bit of faith around here. We all new that this was going to be a hard slog but I believe we are in a good position. Henry made the mistake of playing his hand on Wed. and the Angels saw an opportunity and swept in with a big offer. This is exactly what they did with Tori last year. They wait for the market to settle in and then swoop in with a premium offer that shocks everyone. Today, when Reagins was asked by Lyle Spencer whether the Angels were the team that upped their offer he said no comment. hmmmm? We are all exhausted from this because of how much time CC took to sign. We are close to the end game.

Seriously...
Texeira needs to grow a pair of balls and play for a winner. If he goes to the Nats he is a greedy pile of stinky dog dung. I do not even want him anymore. I do not want a guy who wants all money. I’ll takeManny who wants to play. He might be an idiot and a a hassle, but socsia would control him and I think we should get him for only 2 maybe 3 years and then go get Dunn too. Texeira is not worth 160 plus. Please 160! 180! its way to much. Like Arte said he bought the whole Angels team for 180 Million! why would he spend that on one player! Tex is a greedy bastard and we need to just let him go!

I understand that, but ...
… that still doesn’t make it right given the current economic status of this country. It will be interesting to see what happens to sports if the fans can no longer afford to go to the games. How will they be able to pay those big salaries? I know it’s a long-shot, but some teams could really be affected attendance wise this next year.

good question
But if there’s one thing Americans will pay for (regardless of the economic situation) it’s entertainment. Movies, sporting events, video games. Americans love nothing more, than an escape. An escape from their hum drum lives. This escape normally comes in the form of entertainment. Look at the NFL this season. The rafters are full every game. College football as well.
Now I do recognize that there are “butt loads” more games in MLB than football, but…I think that fans will still show up. Will attendance drop off? Meh, perhaps a bit.

The way I see it
We NEED Tex.
With Tex in the lineup Vlad will have a better offensive year, as will Hunter and probably others, as well. We may still need one more decent bat to win it all. But that could either come from one of our young guys finally living up to potential or else something at the trade deadline.
Without Tex there is nobody else we can acquire that would have the same impact. We just signed Rivera, so I think Manny is out of the equation. And without an improved offense we’ll probably lose Lackey at the end of the year.
So really Tex is the difference between the Angels being a serious contender and possibly the start of a rebuilding process. I say bring on Tex even if you have to overpay a little. He could be the face of the franchise for years to come.

.290 Hitter!?
Way to cherry pick his only stat that is merely above average!
Having “faith” in prospects is dangerous. That could be good, yes, but you make sure they are effective before giving them the full time job. You do NOT rely on them to shore up a very weak offense. Especially on a team that is trying to establish a foot hold in the mainstream media for being a top tier team.
The Angels have money to spend, they need to reassure a growing fanbase they are committing money to the little BoSox problem we have.
We are not the Pirates, we do not horde money and shun our loyal fans.

you know what...
I’m really getting sick of this. Bottom line is Tex can take any offer currently on the table and be far richer than he ever dreamed, just for playing baseball. Why is he still holding up the process? It seems that if wanted to play for the Angels he would have jumped at their offer. I think he’s a good fit and the Angels would do great things with him on the team, but all this drama really has me thinking if he deserves to be part of our team. I hope it’s just Boras being an ass, but really, there’s no good reason for not just signing on the line at this point. Other players are stuck waiting in the wings for the Boras circus to leave town. Scott Boras represents everything wrong with baseball today.

I'm not against Boras
He is just representing a player as best that he can. He is good. He said in the beginning that he was going to get 200/10 for Tex. He hasn’t stopped yet.
Don’t blame the agent over the player. The player chose the agent. Tex is Boras, Boras is Tex whether you like it or not.
I kind of came onto the bandwagon for getting Tex for whatever the cost. This is a two pronged decision: we get him, they won’t. Screw it. Not 200. Get Manny and Peavy and let’s move on.
However, If we get Tex, he is the Franchise. Support him and move on.
Get Peavy and Manny over the next four years. We got Rivera already.

This weekend....
I agree with the comments that Tex = Boras and Boras = Tex. The fact is that Tex chose to have Boras represent him. Therefore, Boras works for Tex and ultimately takes direction from Tex. It’s time for Tex to “man up” and be held to the same standards that every working woman and man in the US is held to. Tex is responsible and accountable for how Boras conducts business on his behalf. I’m so tired of the entitlement mentality that exists today with too many (but not all) of the prima donna athlete / entertainers.
I suspect that before the weekend is done, Tex will have agreed to terms with one of the east coast teams. My guess would be Boston, but honestly it would not be a shock if it were the Nats. The shock would be if he came back to the Angels. I really hope I’m wrong because if the fall back plan really is Konerko or Dye – which means trading some of the prospects for these two “has beens” – I’ll be disappointed in both Arte and Reagins. If we have to trade to get better, my humble request would be to go back to San Diego and find a deal for Peavy and Gonzales.

Missing the point
Yes, Boras does have an affirmative obligation to his client. However, the issue is not per se what he is doing, it’s how he does it. There are approximately several hundred MLB agents approved by the players association. The overwhelming majority do not operate in the manner that Boras always has.
Results matter. The “how” something is accomplished matters as much as “what” is accomplished. Tex hired Boras. How Boras conducts business on behalf of Tex is a reflection on Tex. Hell, even the knucklehead ARod found that out – and he fired Boras because of it.

My Take...
Boras is an ass but he is great at what he does. He gets the max amount of dollars for all of his clients year in and year out. he has a proven track record to support his clients and get them the contracts AND teams that they would like to play for.
I think you need to keep Tex and Boras separate because there is a business side that Tex shouldn’t get involved in if he wants whats best for him and his market value. If Boras was my agent and he told me to shut up, smile, and say “I’m exploring all my options” to every question asked – then that is exactly what I’ll do.
Yes it is ultimately his choice where he will sign and Boras is doing his job to get the max contract from all team Tex prefers. If, as speculated by some, the Halos have the best offer on the table – then it is Boras job to get the Sox to that level to provide Tex with his east coast preference. If the Nats or Bal are the high bidder – then Boras needs to get the Halos and Bos to that number so that Tex has the best every team can give before making his choice.
Its a pain in the ass and maddening to follow as a fan – but IMO you really can’t fault Tex.
That being said – Fuck the Red Sox

I'm still trying to understand why it'd be a shock ...
If he signed with the Angels?
It’s amazing because NO ONE still has said how much our offer is. The Times said it was $160 million. However, the lead to that story said that it was double Hunter’s $90 million contract. I suck at math, but 2x 90 = 180 (million, that is).
Which figure is true? If Boston has offered $165-170 million and it’s not enough, I’d lean towards $180 million.
Finally – what part of this statement says there’s still a chance we want this guy?:
“We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.”

It is funny to go over to the other websites, Over the Monster, Camden Chat, and Federal Baseball.
All the fans interpret and spin all the quotes from the various GMs and owners to favor Teixeira coming to play on their team. They all have the same number of fans who have their hearts set on Mark being on their team next year and will be crushed if he does’nt. However the folks at Over the Monster are growing angry because of the meeting in Texas to close the deal on Teixeira fell through.

Guess you should be shocked there buddy…FROM MLBTR
5:15pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Angels withdrew their offer to Teixeira. He says the Angels’ decision “appears more final” than Boston’s “not going to be a factor” statement. Rosenthal believes the Angels offered around $160MM over eight years, but Tex wants to be on the East Coast. Tim Brown says the Halos will not re-enter the bidding for Teixeira.Brown, who seemingly had the Angels’ withdrawn offer scoop first, has more. He says Arte Moreno decided that Tex did not intend to play for the Angels and were being used to drive up the price.
