Napoli a top 5 catcher
Over at rotoauthority they have Napoli projected to be atop 5 catcher for fantasy leagues. I think that is cool for Naps and also for the Angels. After all this discussion Napoli gets thrown under the bus. I agree with the projection if Sosh gets off Mathis's nuts and gives Naps the at-bats he deserves. I personally think he can hit 30 bombas if given the opportunity. He might have a BA anywhere from .250 to .270 but no higher. I think Naps can step in an be a huge bat for us especially after this whole Texeira ordeal. What do you guys think? Top 5? Top 10?

Guy cannot throw out a baserunner to save his life...
I could have run a sack race from 1B to 2B last year and beaten his throw.

Oh, I missed the word "Fantasy" in your post...
No doubt about it due to the HR’s he was putting up in limited duty last year.
I am not a big fan of fantasy sports. Later.

his shoulder was eff'd up too
don’t forget that.
after the surgery, who knows? maybe he’ll have a rocket now
Kotch would've had that.

But at least he doesn't throw it to Torii...

The MAthis Factor
I wonder if all those Mathis starts actually give Napoli the rest he needs to produce at his high level. Just a thought…
ive always wondered if his physical conditioning has a lot to do with the platoon

The platoon is good for Naps.
He’s a streaky hitter. Sitting down for a few days does him a lot of good. I don’t see him starting more than 75% of the time. Mathis is good enough for us to be okay with that.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
The only catcher that starts 75%...
Is named Russell Martin. Naps at 115 games would be huge but any more than that would be tough to pull off for any catcher.
Jim Scully
And look at the good it's done Martin
He’s really taken it in the shorts as a result. 75% is pretty crazy optimistic.
Witty .sig goes here.
probably wouldnt hurt to DH Naps sometimes...
I guess we got a bazillion other players for that tho….maybe sometime in the future though?

Do you mean the 16oz curls at Goathill aren't good exercise?

Nap has missed a lot of time
the past 2 seasons because of injury. He played a career high 99 games in 2006. Expect him to eclipse 100 games in 2009 if he can stay healthy. They need his bat.

health, health, health
I wish i could give the Angels a magic potion that would guarantee no injuries unless it’s to GMJ, Speier, or Willits.

Napoli is legit.
His OPS+’s for his three years are 110, 107, and 147 for a career OPS+ of 121. His regular OPS in 2008 was a staggering .960, which was tops for any catcher with over 200 ABs.
by Chzburger Jones on Dec 22, 2008 5:34 PM PST reply actions
Among catchers with 502+ career plate appearances, he's 20th all-time in OPS+
The list of top-100 active players goes like this:
6 Mauer 128
15 Posada 124
18 McCann 122
20 Napoli 121
21 Soto 121
23 Victor Martinez 119
48 I-Rod 110
52 Ryan Doumint 109
55 Russell Martin 108
66 Kelly Shoppach 105
68 Chris Iannetta 104
86 Varitek 100
92 Chris Coste 99
I like Napoli's approach at the plate
Because when he connects, there is a chance the ball could go a long, long way.
He also works the pitchers and can take a walk here and there.
Hopefully he plays a full season and his numbers don’t suffer too much because of the grind.
I agree...
With Teix apparently gone, Napoli is the most selective Angel hitter on the roster.

Naps is looking pretty good
If he can stay healthy and improve on the base stealing (see Downing Rules above), then we might have a great catcher on our hands. Kind of Troy Glausy at the plate.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
