What We've Lost
This is not meant to be a negative, pessimistic, doomsday post. I am not one who believes that losing out on Teixeira is the end of the world. I was just thinking about what the Angels have lost since last season and wanted to do a little analysis.
Garret Anderson: I'm a BIG fan of GA. I've always thought that he was extremely underrated. Even last year he hit .293 and knocked in 83 RBI. OBP/SLG was only .325/.433 but he was still a valuable hitter. Juan Rivera was obviously still recovering from the broken leg last year, but many people tout his 2006 season: .310/.362/.525. IF he is back to that form, the Angels lose nothing here. Given the fact that those numbers were mostly compiled from mid-June through September of that year, I think repeating those numbers in 2009 is optimistic. Throw in the fact that Matthews Jr. will play LF some of the time, and I believe we were better off with GA.
Jon Garland: I was never a fan, and his 4.90 ERA was tough to swallow. Especially since there always seemed to be a 4-run inning in there somewhere. But his 14 wins still need to be replaced by somebody. Mosely? No. Adenhart? Wellllll...maybe. But even in AAA, Adenhart posted a 5.76 ERA with a WHIP of 1.71. I think this is the Angels biggest hole. Yes, we need another big bat. But a 4-man rotation just won't cut it.
Casey Kotchman/Mark Teixeira: We all know what Tex did during his tenure. And most fans are bemoaning the complete lost of Kotch at this point. I'll admit my own personal mancrush. But I think his .287/.327/.448 can be replaced. Kendry Morales hasn't put up the numbers yet in the bigs, but his .341/.376/.543 in AAA are fairly gaudy. I only have two problems here. When he sits, Quinlan plays. And we are going to miss the holy heck out of Kotch/Tex's glove.
Frankie Rodriguez: Sure, those 62 saves get overblown. Still...62 saves! The peripherals weren't all that bad. It's just that we had to hold our breath all the time in the 9th. (Anybody else around here remember watching Percy pitch?) Maybe Shields is ready, but even if he is we'll miss him as a set-up guy, rubber-arm and all. Maybe it's Arredondo's time, but we'll need to see him close out a few games and, more importantly, deal with those inevitable blown saves. I'm all for adding Fuentes to the pen, especially if it can be done for something like 3 years/20 million.
We have the luxury of only having to have a better record than the A's, M's, and Rangers. That's not too hard. But we've lost a lot since last year and I'm not rooting for the front office to just sit on their hands at this point. One or two more pieces can still make the Angels a team that will go all the way.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

ya, this was a pretty rough offseason
we all saw this coming in terms of how many guys were eligible for free agency. But, we might want to look at this from the perspective that we might be able to take advantage of our weak division in letting our young kids develop while still competing for the playoffs. the draft picks will only add to this.
If(a big IF) brandon wood starts hitting in the pro’s like he has destroyed AAA, we’ll have a new power bat at about 1/40th of what teixeira makes. Arredondo might blossom into the new frankie. howie might actually stay healthy and get in a groove. aybar could take the next step. morales could make acuda’s wet dreams come true.
Either way, it certainly seems like we’re in a slight transition stage, which is what will keep the angels strong going forward. Letting GA go was tough but necessary. Teixeira proved why stoneman was weary of making big deals.

If if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas.
And if my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle.
I had a friend used to say that. Just felt like repeating it here.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

doesn't really apply here, though
these are all variables… and i’ll add another:
IF management will get off the nuts of “proven” veterans (ie GMJ, Quinlan) and let the kids play, we should be thoroughly surprised.
Kotch would've had that.

Wow... Wake up Fellow Angel Fans
The Angels will be lucky to win the West next year if we stand pat.
1. Rivera is an A-hole and will probably hit .250 with 12 HRs and 53 RBI
2. Brandon Wood has already shown he is NOT big league material.
3. Arredondo is the only decent bet you have to come through, just not this year.
4. Kendry Morales? Please… He might hit .270 with 15 dingers (maybe we will take that?)
5. The A’s are inching closer to the Halos and already have a better lineup… and.. if they add a couple of starters we could be in trouble.
Light up the Freakin Halo!

Your points might be more valid had you not just
implied a preference for the Pittsburgh Pirates lineup.

1. You’re an idiot.
2. You’re a bigger idiot.
3. You’re still an idiot.
4. Viva la idiota!!
5. Probably the most stupid comment of all. I think you get the point.

I could have a field day refuting this entire post...
But it would be too easy. However :
The A’s are inching closer to the Halos and already have a better lineup
What? WHAT?? WHAT??? Is that regular free-base or rock?

I may have read it wrong
I took it to mean that they had a better lineup than us, rather than better as opposed to what it was, which is why I freaked out.. Of course I acknowledge that their lineup has improved with the addition of Holliday.
But they’re still poo-heads.

They'll be fine next year
Who’s the threat? The Mariners will be lucky not to lose 100 games, the Rangers still can’t pitch, and the A’s still can’t hit. The difference between Matt Holliday in Colorado and Matt Holliday away from Colorado is the difference between Babe Ruth and Torii Hunter. Take away six healthy months from Frank Thomas in 2006 (which we all knew couldn’t last), and the Angels would have five consecutive division crowns. And the last one wasn’t even close.
There’s still time to make up lost ground over the next year. I’m more worried about the rotation staying healthy (they pitched a lot of innings last year) than free-agent signings. Something will open on the trade market; something always does. I’m just hoping it’s Adrian Gonzalez.

While I believe the tales of the Angels demise as division champs
are exaggerated, it will be a hell of a lot closer for all teams concerned.

1. Rivera could do what you mention, but he’s not an A-hole.
2. Small sample size
3. OK
4. Yes, we will take it.
5. Pass the bong.
The Angels still end up in the 88 to 92-win range even without any moves. Good ’nuff for me.

I see where marshgr is coming from here...
and I think he makes some valid points.
1. Rivera didn’t show me much this last year to think he can even produce like GA.
2. Wood had shown he isn’t ready. Marshgr is right.
3. Arrendondo is a huge question mark.
4. Kendry Morales has potential, but he’s a definite downgrade defensively
5. I think the A’s are inching closer.
Now that Tex is a Yank (which is better than a Chowd)- what’s our move? Peavy? Fuentes? Dunn?
Let’s see what you got Reagins!
Re-sign Tex!

once bitten twice shy
we let Glaus walk… McPherson looks ready… his back goes out.
we let Erstad walk… Kotchman IS ready… he gets mono
If Kendry and Brandon Wood stay healthy and just meet their MINOR-LEAGUE-EQUIVALENCIES the 2009 Angels should be fine.

Don't forget
- We let Kennedy walk, and got a .300 hitting 2Bman with mad doubles power.
- We let Percy walk, and got Frankie to be a historically great closer.
- We let Washburn walk, and got Joe Saunders to eat his lunch for a fraction of the price.
- We let Bengie Molina walk, and got a superior (and cheaper) Mike Napoli.
- We sent Jose Molina away, and got a better, younger defender who hits just as bad, but might iprove.
- We let Scott Spiezio walk, and he crashed and burned.
- We let Eckstein walk, and got two Eckstein-can’t-touch-this years from Orlando Cabrera.
- We gave O.C. his walking papers, and got equivalent production from Aybar/Izturis for a fraction of the price.
We’ve won 4 divisions in 5 years while playing entertaining baseball, having two legitimate shots at the World Series (2008 & 2005), keeping payroll essentially flat, and ushering in a historic youth movement which is — like most collections of young players — bound to improve as it enters its prime.

The Redsox will soon add Tex and will ink a starter soon.
The Yankees have Sabathia, Burnett, and will likely add Manny
The Mets bolstered the weakest part of their team and are now contenders.
The Angels signed Juan Rivera… oh crap!

we should make a log of all the people about to jump off the bridge, record some posts, and bring them back up at the trade deadline.
Oh..whats that?> The trade deadline?
You mean…..you can still make trades during the season if things dont work out? Teixeira wasn’t here last April? WHAAAAAAA???

Trust me Ark. The Angels strategic planning for the best team possible year after year is in place and doing well. It ain’t easy.
On the other hand, I agree with most of what you are saying.

I think there's a Plan B.
I just don’t think there was a Plan B until after we backed out of the Tex sweepstakes.
I think signing Fuentes is a step in the right direction. I just hope they don’t give him something ridiculous like 3/30 just because the money is there.
I’m still not confident in Rivera/Morales as a replacement for Anderson/Kotchman. Maybe their bats will surprise me, but I’m pretty sure their gloves won’t.
Most importantly, I’m hearing absolutely nothing about that 5th starter. That’s the spot where the front office has a chance to make a big move. And I think they will.

We really don't need a 5th starter
Go back & look at Moseley’s Starts from last year, after April he only had on horrendous start. Otherwise they were all at least 5 innings 3 runs or less. He could be this years Garland.

5 innings with 3 runs...
…constitutes a lousy start. For that matter, going just 5 innings constitutes a lousy start. We need somebody much better than Dustin Moseley.

Not at all. That is very good for a fifth starter.
It just might be too much for the offense to bare.
