R.I.P. - Angel's shot at World Series

All hope of the 2009 season has completely gone out the window for Angel fans.. and for that matter for all the other American League teams. If the Yankees add Manny as well, I will be so turned off by baseball I will definitely be cancelling my MLB ticket.  Something has to be done.. this is frucking ridiculous!

Projected Lineup and Rotation for the Hated Ones...

Rotation - CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, Joba Chamberlain.

Catcher - Jorge Posada
1st Base - Tex (pains me to type this!  Fuck him)
2nd Base - Robinson Cano
3rd Base - Alex Rodriguez
Shortstop - Derek Jeter
Leftfield - Johnny Damon
Centerfield - Melky Cabrera
Rightfield - Xavier Nady
DH - Nick Swisher or maybe Manny Ramirez

Batting Order:

1. Derek Jeter
2. Robinson Cano
3. A-Rod
4. Tex
5. Manny
6. Nady
7. Cabrera
8. Posada
9. Damon

BOOOOOOOOOOO!

“All hope of the 2009 season has completely gone out the window for Angel fans…”

Weak sauce. Sour grapes.

Please, fellow Halos fans, deal with this already.

I’m calling the Kleenex company to see about a huge shipment that needs delivering in the greater LA area.

Calm down

Look what happened to the Tigers this year. I know that team is not comparable pitching-wise to the 09 Yankees, but don’t get all worked up over paper… um, tigers.

New stadium hype...

Agree completely

Posada is an old catcher…. Not something you want to count on.

Jeter is overated, a solid player but not currently an All-Star level player.

Johnny Damon is getting older and his skill set isn’t exactly one that should age well. Great OF are though ;)

Cano has yet to put it all together but shown great stretches, just like HK.

Melky Cabrera sucks…..

Nick Swisher is not someone who scares the Angels pitching staff.

The way I see it, the Angels will face the Yankees in the 1st round, A-Rod will go 2-23 with 10K’s and 5 GIDP, Tex will go 10-21 with 10 singles, Sabathia will go 0-2 with a 8+ ERA, the Angels will run at will on their pathetic OF Defense, and the Angels will win in 4 games.

Posada is busted up can't catch a huge number of games

They have too many outfielders. Matsui need to DH. They have issues getting all the bats into the lineup.

CC is going to start slow like last year. He put a lot of wear and tear on that arm

This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.

by hauldog on Dec 23, 2008 3:09 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Melky to the bench or on his way out....

add in Matsui to the DH, Damon or Swisher in CF…

Not worried about Tex joining the Yanks. The only FA’s they sign that do well have been Arod, Mussina, to some extent Rocket, and Arod/Moose didn’t get too far…

So, with Burnett becoming the next regretted contract like Pavano CC may do alright, but that means Tex is doomed to be the next Giambi bust…

Can we at least get through Spring Training...

….before you write-off the Angels. Jeez.

If MLB was just a sexy lineup contest, I’d agree with you. Fortunately, it’s not.

CC is due for a breakdown. Burnett is a borderline headcase. Tex is awesome but not the end all be all.

There is a reason why they actually play the games.

by Ajax on Dec 23, 2008 3:19 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

besides....

I’m okay if we let the youngsters play all year and we barely make .500. I’ll still be around to watch every game. It just means we’d kick ass in ‘10 with some young studs who are ready to play like All Stars. We don’t need to sign ‘em, just develop ’em, and we haven’t done enough of that lately.

Angels

Going to win the division…they have to worry about that big bat again however and as laughable as it may seem, K-Rod is going to be missed more as far as the bottom line results are concerned.

Please don’t sign Fuentes!

by BBFan1 on Dec 23, 2008 3:28 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If we can somehow lure a gonzalez away from the pads along with peavy for adenhart/jepsen/willits/wood/aybar or izzy then we should do it.

We will receive exactly wut were looking for, extra pitching, shortening our surplus of quality young players and a big bat.

Then we sign fuentes and call it an offseason.

Guarantee we will have the yanks weak at their knees come opening day.

Our roto will be just as good if not better than theres:
1.peavy
2.lackey
3.saunders
4.santana
5.weaver

Our lineup:
1. Figgy
2. Izzy/aybar
3. Vlad
4. Gonzo
5. Hunter
6. Napoli
7. Rivera
8. Kendrick
9. GMJ

That’s one of the most balanced lineups in the mlb

Thoughts?

Gonzalez

Will be the last star standing in San Diego. The San Diego Padres will not trade him as long as he is launching 30 home runs a year with over a 100 RBIs.

The San Diego Padres would be killed by their fan base since Gonzalez is a local kid in more ways than one.

Peavy might be traded one way or the other, but he isn’t the big bat we are looking for.

Gonzalez

Born in San Diego, father was a professional baseball player in Mexico, went to HS in San Diego.

May not be credible, but according to his Wikipedia page:

“The son of Mexican parents, Gonzalez lived twelve years of his youth in Mexico. He played for Mexico in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He plays winter ball in the Mexican Pacific League for the Mazatlan Deers.”

Lots of the Padres’ Mexican fan base would be angry if he were traded, particularly because he is a star and not some benchwarmer or backup.

no peevey no gonzalez

pee is an nl pitchet. likes having a weak bottom of the order. he’s not an a.l. pitcher.

gonzalez is a franchise player.

This is nuts

A) The Yankees are better than they were, but it’s not like we’re talking all-time great team or anything. Lots of holes. The lineup looks strong because Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon are famous and it takes a long time for us to adjust our impressions, but none of them can be counted on to be superstars anymore.

B) The best team wins the World Series, like, slightly more often than the second best, and the third best, and the fourth best. The Phillies weren’t the best team last year. The Cards were by far the WORST team in 2006. Don’t even think about the playoffs until late September.

Saving countless runs with my defense.

And don't forget

they will be in the toughest division in baseball, having to battle with the BoSux and Rays for 18 to 20 games each. Not an east road. Plus, the Angels have absolutely owned the Yankees ever since Sciocia came aboard, no matter what kind of team he had. I say bring ’em on!!

by Clip Show on Dec 23, 2008 3:38 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

should say “easy road”..not east road…although they will be traveling a proverbial east road as well.

Facts

The New York Yankees have bought themselves several steps closer to a championship.

On paper, I wouldn’t bet against the talent they put on the field.

Unless I see them fail to make the playoffs, they will be a team to worry about.

Yeah, we beat a team like Boston something like eight times during the regular season, but we still didn’t beat them when it counted.

While we can’t worry about these teams, these are the ones we’ll likely have to go up against once postseason arrives.

by BBFan1 on Dec 23, 2008 3:50 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But when

The playoffs start, anything can happen. Especially after a long season with possible injuries to Burnett and who knows how sabathia will hold up after pitching so many innings. Plus these superstars don’t just come into the league, they come up as young guys from the minors. Give our farm a chance to prove itself.

by 3eyes on Dec 23, 2008 10:40 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you know what happens to people that tell others what to do

“stop being a bunch of whining babies…”

The proverb is when someone begins “why don’t you”….the other person responds “go fuck yourself”. People do not listen to strangers telling them what to do. They don’t listen to loved ones. They listen to their bosses and eventually quit or stab the boss in the back

When one enters into battle ill prepared, then they should expect nothing short of what what they expected.

The Angels right now do not have much in the way of proven run production. They need a lot more on the team than they have in SP, RP and a bat.

You can’t compete without the meat.

Agree 100%. It's about the entertainment.

And I thought 2008 was one hell of an entertaining season.

6 months of great baseball & 100 wins >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> one bad week & 3 losses

Have people already forgotten the drought of the 1990’s where the Angels spent most of their time either sucking or choking?

Do you ever watch the highlights they play during pre-game with Train’s song “Calling All Angels?” That shows the history of the franchise all the big highlights from 1961 up to present day.

I always chuckle, because in-between the Witt-Langston no-hitter (1990), there is no highlight until the 2002 playoffs!

They should consider adding a clip showing Tim Salmon coming away with the ROY award in 1993, But still, they couldn’t think of any highlights during those 12 years. Woof.

by Downing Rules on Dec 24, 2008 12:28 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

EXACTLY! That's why the current run is so amazing (and fun)

From 1987 to 2001 the Angels had ONE 90-win season (1989; 91 wins). Over a 15-year span they had ONE freaking season where they cracked 90 wins. That’s why it pisses me off when people cry, “Oh boo hoo hoo, another 1st round playoff exit”.

All should take heed of former-NFL head coach Jim Mora’s words of wisdom:

Playoffs?? Don’t talk about — playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game!”

World Series is all that matters

But I’m not a type of fan who dwells on such things. A bad year is disappointing, but then I have more fun rooting for the underdog, where the team that has a ways to go. At times wouldn’t mind if the Angels were competitive, but not saddled with the pressure to win it all.

Still, with how the Angels are situated these days, there is no excuse for this team:

A.) Not to make the postseason each year.
B.) Not to put itself in position to go as far as they can in any said postseason.

This post doesn't seem necessary...

given that our lineup already failed to stack up against the feared Pittsburgh Pirates.

Shouldn’t you be comparing the Yanks’ lineup to that formidable powerhouse in Pittsburgh?

Folks...Teix was not the answer...

…we were built to win last season and did not! 2008 was the failure!

Time to let our kids play and mix in with our vets…let the chips fall. With minimal luck we win the division again and with better luck our young guns blossom into All Stars…this is always the fun of watching baseball anyway…NOT BUYING PLAYERS!

The sense of family and team is in the growth of the young guys! Time to root hard for 3Wood, Kowbell, Rivera, HK, Arredondo, Jepsen, Aybar, and Saunders/Santana to repeat last season! Who knows who drops in as our young surprise, a la Arredondo last season?! Maybe Trumbo or Congor or ???

Kotch and Marek for Teixeira...hmmm, what a deal! Or NOT!

Step back fom the ledge

The Halos will very likely contend (again) next year. The pessimism here is getting out of control. I can’t imagine what it would be like if we were talking about the Royals or the Mariners, who have no realistic chance of contention.

This fanpost should serve as the impetus for creating the anti-rec button.

I still love the Halos. Always Have, Always Will.

They have just as good of a chance to win the WS as does the Yanks. Both teams still have to prove they can get past the Red Sox in the post-season.

Worst. Post. Ever.

Why don’t you just crown ‘em now, and screw the entire season. In fact, why don’t we just have off-seasons from now on, with trades and signings, and then we can all vote who is the best on paper and stop taking all these pesky trips to the ballpark and stressing out during pennant races.

Anyone remember way back in ‘07 when everyone started blowing the Tigers? How’d that work out for them again?

Angels shot at World Series

If I were a handicapper, I’d give it 15-1 right now. I think Lackey’s overrated when compared to Halliday. I saw them matched up at Angel stadium and it was a joke. Halliday can take care of business. That’s what the Angels desperately need for their ace. No excuses.

Sure the bullpen is a concern, but so is the consistency of SP 4 and ?5.

While Figgins has been solid since 2002, I think its time to move on and let Wood and Maicer take over. Then there’s nagging health issues of Howie.

So I’d like to see a batting order of:

Willits D/H
Kendrick
Big Daddy
Juan Rivera
Hunter
Kendry 1B
Napoli
Wood
Izuris

by Kristy_Joe on Dec 24, 2008 8:07 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Put Figgy in LF...

Rivera in RF and Vlad at DH and you have a good lineup. Maybe move Izzy up to #2, Kendrick down to #6, but other than that – I’d go to war with that lineup. If Figgy is traded, I’d go with your lineup – but most likely – and my hope – is this group…

LF Figgy
SS Izzy
DH Vlad
RF Rivera
CF Hunter
2B Kendrick
1B Kendry
C Napoli
3B Wood

This lineup is not the optimal setting…I’d prefer an Adam Dunn or Manny Ramirez in there – but as we stand right now – this is the opening day group, and I don’t hate it.

by jimmuscomp on Dec 24, 2008 8:54 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'd move it around a little...

let’s assume we traded Aybar for some pitching for this one, shall we?

Figgins LF
Izturis SS
Guerrero DH
Hunter CF
Napoli C
Rivera RF
Kendrick 2B
Morales 1B
Wood 3B

that leaves room for growth in the bottom 3, keeps your big bats in the middle, and still leaves you with some speed at the top

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Dec 24, 2008 9:32 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I didnt’ mean to put Nipples so low – my bad. But, I’d put HK higher than 7th. I still think that he is the right guy to hit 2nd, 2008 post-season be-damned.
