Time to move onto plan f?
In this little blurb from the OC Register, Reagins is quoted as ruling out basically every bat on the free agent market. So I would not hold your breath waiting for any kind of significant offensive improvement via free agency.
This of course does not rule out the trade market, but to be honest with you I do not see much out there. I doubt Fielder is in play, and I am thinking that the Votto rumor was the stupidest rumor I have heard in quite sometime.
Any way here is the link to Reagins quote
What do you guys see as being available on the trade market?

Bah....
If the Angels don’t get anyone on the FA market that will be disappointing. With Vlad falling off, and Hunter just not a difference maker offensively…. their offense is bad.
Yea who wants someone that can mash homers and won’t cost a draft pick…… Sign Dunn over Fuentes everyday and twice on Sunday. The bullpen is not going to be a major issue. Shields, Dondo, Oliver, Jepsen and whoever decides to step up from Thompson, Bulger, and even Loux.
Reagins…. You guys need some mashers.
Thank you
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

And Ninja's countermove is what?
Peavy? Dunn? Fuentes?
beuhler?
Tex is a Yank...now our counter move is what?
…he already said NO to Dunn and “maybe” to Fuentes…
Of Adam Dunn, the free agent slugger, Reagins said. "We have talked to his representatives. Adam will not be an Angel."
Reagins said negotiations with reliever Brian Fuentes were continuing, but "nothing is imminent at this time," and he said the Angels were not talking with free agent outfielders Milton Bradley, Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell.
Kotch and Marek for Teixeira...hmmm, what a deal! Or NOT!
I love it...
and the mlb.com article says very different things from Reagins about Fuentes…
Reagins said he saw that Fuentes is interested but hasn’t recently contacted Fuentes’ agent, Rick Thurman.
“I’ve heard that report,” Reagins said. “I haven’t had a chance to speak to his representatives in recent days, but what I’d say is that he’s a quality player and he’s a free agent, so there is an opportunity, but whether we explore it remains to be seen.”
Kotch and Marek for Teixeira...hmmm, what a deal! Or NOT!
Are there any slap hitters left on the market?
Maybe we can make a trade to the Dodgers for Juan Pierre.
I've got nothing.
i actually wouldn't mind swapping contracts
pierre for gmj. at least pierre and figgins are best friends haha.
Screw Boston. Go Rays!
Ugh..
Doesn’t he lead the league in making outs? Three years running i think!
P.S. I know it was all sarcasam, but really… ugh!

Still
Is he really worse than GMJ? I think they suck equally enough to make a trade be “beneficial” to both sides.
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
yes
Pierre is worse. GMJr. is vastly superior from a defensive standpoint. He can play all 3 OF positions competently, and can throw the ball back to the infield. The same cannot be said for Pierre.
Worse is almost better though, then.
If Pierre is that bad, there’s less chance of Scioscia playing him for no apparent reason over more competent choices.
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
Not to mention:
We’ve still not seen GMJ with healthy knees. Good be better with a bat. GOD I HOPE…
by MidwayCityLivestock on Dec 24, 2008 12:56 PM PST up reply actions
Excellent point about GMJ's knees.
It’s possible that GMJ has a big rebound in 2009 (both with the bat and glove). And by rebound I mean he becomes a league-average offensive player and his defense is slightly above-average. That would make him a decent, though grossly overpaid, #4 outfielder.

Two rumors I heard...
Atkins from Colorado — I’m always suspect of Colorado numbers (.233 away; .200 pt drop in slg)
Beltre from Seatle — I actually like this one last three years avg. 25 hr; 88 rbi; .270 avg; .470 slg; above average fielder. We would have to accept these numbers and not the 48hr w/ the Dodgers.
We could put Figgins in left, Rivera in right and DH Vlade — GMJ as a 4th OF (or figure out someway to get rid of his ass…apologies to his Mother and Sarge Sr.)
Just don’t know if Seattle would trade in division
[I have to change my signature]
GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can
I also am very leary of Atkins
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.
Out of curiosity
Does Coors inflate batting average or just power stats? Because what’s interesting is in looking at Atkin’s home/road career splits, the drastic drop off is in AVG (which in turn translates to OBP/OPS), but not in his HRs, which are pretty equal at home/road in fairly equal plate appearances.
That seems wrong to me… is he possibly just one of those players better playing at home than road, rather than being massively impacted by Coors?
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
I'm guessing
without knowing, that Coors also inflates batting averages. It is a much larger outfield that most places – and therefore, more area for a ball to land fairly.
That answers it. Although it's strange the same wouldn't hold true for Petco then...
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
Also breaking balls do not break as well
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.
Walk year might be a plus also

Today is Festivus!
The Teixeira signing should not have been reported/announced today. Is nothing sacred anymore?
Oh yeah, the Angels should sign Randy Johnson and Juan Cruz.
"The Sandpeople are easily startled but they will soon be back and in greater numbers."
standing pat
i think it is more like rebuilding this time. Vlad is not going to be back and Lackey won’t want to stay if that’s the direction of the team.
We won't rebuild...
We passed on Tex an Sabathia. Re-building is an awfully big word to throw around when we have a young nucleus (Kendry, Howie, Aybar, Wood, Black Magic, Saunders, New Smoke, Weaver, etc.) who want to stay and we don’t have any idea what the club is going to do in the next few days let alone this summer. Remember, Arte did offer at least $160 million to Tex. It’s not like we’re the A’s.

160 never had a chance to get this done
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.
Yes but
There’s a lot of opinion out there that we made our offer, Arte flew out to Vegas to present the offer and that’s essentially the negotiations. We were never contacted in return for the chance to really counter offer. Not like Boston/Wash/and obv NY were.
I heard the opinion here and on yesterday’s drive time show on AM830. But not the normal guy as he is a complete tool.

Yes I have heard that as well. I am of the opinion he did not want to be here
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.
Peavy is the big one
We need a top of the line pitcher for the next four years. A trade for Peavy would give us that. Lackey is an unknown at this point. We get Peavy and we can’t sign Lackey and Vlad, then we have huge bank for 2010 from contract losses and what we saved in 2009. We sign Lackey and Vlad, then unfortunately we are stuck with Peavy ;)
And despite what everyone is saying, If we get Peavy, we are world series contenders. Not that we aren’t without him.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
Unfortunately
the FA market next season is extremely weak. We might as well just try to extend Lackey and Vlad while we can since they are the best FA’s available next season, other than maybe Matt Holliday.
by Chzburger Jones on Dec 24, 2008 4:21 PM PST up reply actions
yes, extension highly advised in order to avoid the rebuilding word.
Let’s not end up like the Giants though

pitching pitching pitching
beef up the pen
analyze starting pitching possibilities
hope that the young gun position players step up
if needed, trade during the season
Agree about the pitching.
Fuentes orginally wanted a 3-year deal for $30m – $33m but what if (as per info at mlbtraderumors) he is open to a 2-year deal for $18m? That’s an annual cost that is lower than the $10m the Angels paid K-Rod in 2008. Could Randy Johnson be persuaded to join the Angels for a 1 -year deal at $7m plus incentives? The Angels in effect paid $13.5m for Garland in 2008 ($12m salary plus $1.5m to the White Sox).
Potential 2009 Rotation
Lackey
Santana
Johnson
Weaver
Saunders
Potential 2009 Bullpen
Fuentes
Shields
Dondo
Oliver
Speier
Jepsen

i like the way that looks
if b-wood and k-mo step up, vlad maintains, and juan returns to 2006 form, we should be in good shape.
I counted 4 if's there
And I’m not sure you got all of them.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
I think you're two for four...kind of.
I think Vladdy will be fine. But Wood has shown nothing at the major league level and we’ve never seen Morales perform over a whole season. Still I think he will be average or better. Rivera on the other hand, gets way too much optimism. 2006 will be tough for him to repeat.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
I'm setting my easy chair to stun
seventh inning stretch is gonna be seventh inning yawn and I’ll be passed out a few minutes later. Hope I can make it through the early innings. Hope there’s someone to drive in those runs!
Just a Thought
Giambi? He’s left-handed. Still has some pop. .875 OPS in 2008. OPS+ of 107 or higher every single year except 2004.
I’ll duck now to avoid the shoes sure to be thrown at my head…
No shoes necessary...
But is that a signing that would qualify as signing someone just to sign someone? Not to mention blocking El Cubano for yet another year after he’s already exhausted his AAA experience?
by MidwayCityLivestock on Dec 24, 2008 10:49 AM PST up reply actions
Perhaps
If it could be done cheaply enough, the Halos could use him as the DH when both Vlad & Rivera are playing in the field, with Morales at 1B. He could slide over to 1B when Vlad or Rivera is the DH, with Morales taking over one of the corner OF spots. I don’t think the Yankees offered him arbitration, so it wouldn’t cost a draft pick. Make it an incentive-laden deal, and I think he could still be a reasonably productive player for another year or two.
Such a move would relegate GMJr. to a purely reserve role (not a bad thing), and make Willits expendable (perhaps as trade bait in a deal for another arm).
I've said it before
I want us to trade Reggie just so I can see him possibly play every day for someone.
Soth deff likes to switch up the lineups, so your scenario would fit within the standard ops, but I’m of the opinion that we should really give Kendry the Shot full time at this point. He more than deserves it and if nothing else, we may finally understand who he is by trade deadline.

Say it ain't true
Has anybody read the LA Times or the Boston newspapers today. It appears that Tex never wanted to go to Boston and Boras called Reagins on Monday and said it would take 8/176 to sign him and we said no thanks. It was then that he went to the Yankees and told them what it would take. I hope he really didn’t want to come here because reading this today does not help with my disappointment in not getting Tex.
Saw the same thing
And I would’ve done 8 / $176 @ $22 per. Granted, it’s not my money, but come on… we could’ve swung that….
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
i saw it too
and i have to say… i would’ve done it too.
Kotch would've had that.
by howiestheman on Dec 24, 2008 1:22 PM PST up reply actions
I think we all would have done that
considering that it seemed like it would take at least 8/184 at one point.
by Chzburger Jones on Dec 24, 2008 4:31 PM PST reply actions
It isn't just the salary
It’s also the merchandise sales, and the overall revenue a player can generate by being a Yankee vs. being an Angel. It is a significant sum.
Not Happy withe what I'm reading
The more I read the more upset I get. I believe we clearly could have had Tex if we offered 8/176. It appears that the Yankees offered 8/180 late Monday and then Boras came back to the Angels that same day and asked for 8/176. As Tex said to Tori, he wanted to come back but the Angels needed to step up. I like Arte and all but he seems to get his feelings hurt a little to easily. In high stakes negotiations you just have to tough it out and not take it personally. When Tex did not sign with the Red Sox last week (during there visit) I said that we needed to step up to the plate but we didn’t. I guess we will never completely know what went down but I hope the decision not to increase our offer does not hurt us next year and in the years to come.
As you said, "We'll never completely know......,"
but who’s to say that had Moreno offered 8/176, then Boras would not have gone back to the Yankees saything that “just 8/185 would get it done,” etc. There comes a point where you say what you mean, and mean what you say. You should know how far you’re willing to before you get caught up in the frey; once you get to that point, that’s it. Jared Weaver, if he did not really believe it before, knows this now.
Like Hunter was quoted as having said, “I didn’t know what he meant, because I thought eight years and $160 million was a pretty impressive offer.”
Arte
Arte is known for being “stubborn”.
Getting Tex for 8/$176m sure seems like a reasonable deal given what CC got.
But of course it’s his money, he can certainly do whatever he wants with it.
Wow
if that’s true then i will stay home this year. i will not spend money if Arte won’t! This is the biggest off season in history for us and this is the roster you want to go with? Yeesh!!!
