Andy Pettite
Word has it that the Yankees are pretty happy with their current roster and may revoke their one-year $10 million offer to Pettite. We need to replace Garland somehow and Randy Johnson's name keeps coming up in coversation, but with a guy like Pettite on the market, Tony may want to start weighing his options.
Personally I'm not a huge Pettite fan, but he would be a reasonably priced, reliable and consistent replacement for Garland. I think that this would be an option worth giving serious consideration, as Moseley just hasn't convinced me he is worthy of spot in the starting rotation.
What does everyone think about possibly making him an offer?

The Yanks will sign him.
There’s going to be a short couple of days here where the Yankees deal with their guilt about spending all this money.
Then they’ll get right back to it. Because they can.
There are already several media folks out there right now trumpeting the “they can resign Pettitte and still have a smaller team salary than last year” horseshit, as though letting a team’s salary cap be 210 million dollars in the first place is perfectly okay.
Face it, it’s the whole "I"m rich, you’re not, deal with it" mentality that MLB has set up for the Yanks to do whatever they want.
The MLB is becoming more and more of a joke with each passing offseason. All you have to do is look at how the NFL has structured itself, promoting parity and competition amongs all teams, from ownership and upper management needing to excel in managing a budget, drafting talent, trading talent, on down to the players themselves. In the MLB all it takes is to be a Yankee manager and open a checkbook to answer any and all problems, while at least two dozen clubs in the league have zero opportunity to obtain premiere players.

Wouldn't it be cool to see the Yankees undergo
catastrophic financial failure? I mean, if it can happen to Lehman, why not to the Yankees?
Given the scale of our country’s financial struggles, there are no sure successes anymore.
Nobody’s going to bailout the Yanks were they to fail, either.
Okay, sorry, back to reality…

Wouldn't it be cool to see the Yankees invested with Madoff?

Well the Mets new field is being named after a bank
that received a lot of bailout funds. They should call it Joe Taxpayer Field instead of Chase Field

Parity
That may be true about the Yankees and Red Sox spending a ton of money, but you look at the past 10 WS winners, and MLB has had 8 different winners. Compared to the NFL, they’ve only had 6 different winners in the past 10. The NBA is even worse with only 4 different teams. Regardless of the spending difference, the MLB has been the most even of most of the major sports.
Regarding Pettite, I think the Yanks will sign him. Plus he wanted more than what he was getting paid for last year, which i think was close to 14 mill, so I doubt the Angels would be willing to pay that for a 4th or 5th starter.

You only need three good pitchers for the playoffs
Why pay someone 10m to sit on a bench and watch us get beat in the first round again?
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

because you need five to make the playoffs

right, you need three solid starters in...
the playoffs but you need five (sometimes 6-7) to get there

Pettite is better than Garland or Moseley but...
the yanks are going to give him up.

He'll go
to the Yankees or Dodgers. Probably the Yankees though. I wouldn’t mind having him though.

Agree
Except that I think he would consider the Astros again if they are willing to pay him. I think the Yankees are his best shot with the Dodgers 2nd because of Torre.

True.
Forgot about the Astros. But didn’t he go there because his bff Clemens went there? Or was it the other way around?
by Chzburger Jones on Dec 28, 2008 5:50 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought he went there first then Clemens followed though not really sure
I just remember how great it was since the Yankees were pissed that they couldn’t just throw a bunch of money at Pettite to keep him away from going to Houston.

Andy and Roger
One of Americas great love stories
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.

Pettite is the type of guy some team will sign thinking it just improved its pitching staff.
Of course, that’s because the team that will sign him is one that pays more attention to a player’s name than his actual performance.

The pre Moreno Angels (especially Jackie Autry years) would consider signing him
Along with Pedro Martinez, Freddy Garcia, Frank Thomas, Trevor Hoffman, Ivan Rodriguez, and Randy Johnson if he were still available. Actually they probably wouldn’t sign Andy Pettite since he would be too expensive. Jason Giambi would be too expensive too.

there's a difference between signing the guy to be your #1 starter
and signing him to be your #5 starter.
he’d be $2 million cheaper than garland was last year and he is a better pitcher.
by NoDakHalo on Dec 28, 2008 6:23 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Pettite
why would you want to sign a pitcher to be your #5 for 10M?
by HALO_86 on Dec 29, 2008 10:30 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
because we have money to spend.
and every other option we have stinks.
by NoDakHalo on Dec 29, 2008 11:14 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Money
because you have money to spend doesn’t mean you spend it. that gives you options. i don’t know how Arte operates but hopefully if the team ends up under the budget that they set that he lets the team use if for the trade deadline or next off-season.

so you'd like to see moseley in the starting rotation?
by NoDakHalo on Dec 29, 2008 7:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
i would take the chance on the combination of Moseley, Adenhart, Green, Loux, and whomever else they want to throw out there. giving a young pitcher a chance in the MLB is better then giving away 10M on a #5. Escobar is still on the mend and granted there is no garantee of him coming back but i’m willing to take that chance especially because you only need 4 starters for the playoffs.
