Hanley Ramirez in Play?
At least he is according to Heyman/Verducci:
The Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez after losing out to the rival Yankees for star free agent Mark Teixeira, league sources tell SI.com. But while the Marlins listened to Boston's overtures, Florida isn't anxious to trade its best player, and talks apparently have been aborted after no agreement could be reached.
The Marlins were said to be most interested in a center fielder, and discussions apparently centered on Boston's promising youngster Jacoby Ellsbury, talented pitching prospect Clay Buchholz and others in a package for Ramirez, who began in Boston's organization.
I know it's the longshot of longshots, but how sweet would it be if the Halos put a package together and swooped in on HR right in Theo's face?

Not sure we can come up with a package good enough
I mean, what’s the best that we can do? Wood + Adenhart + Conger? Not sure if I would make that deal if I were the Marlins. They will be asking what they wanted for Cabrera last offseason, and then some.

How about
we throw in Mathis, Willits, and maybe something else instead of Conger? They are looking for a catcher and Mathis is major league ready (er…well closer than Conger).

The Marlins...
…are like the guy bumming change in front of the 7-11 and then someone walks up with a hundred dollar bill.

I guess someone gave them 2 lottery tickets once upon a time.
This is the worst offseason in years. I do not even want to talk about it.

as cool as that would be
i’d go for Uggla first… he’s cheaper, and probably more realistic
Kotch would've had that.

Shoulda got him last year..........thats what I think
12/19/08 - Thank you KLJ for coming into my life.

It would take a huge, massive, unheard of type deal to land him
My proposal:
GMJ, Mathis, Aybar, Hatcher, GA, four bats, a club soda, everyone in A ball, Vlad’s offseason numbers, pretzels (for an amount to be disclosed later) and cash
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

realistically
I would guess that would take Wood, Adenhart, Walden, Jepsen and Trumbo.
That sounds asinine and honestly i think thats what theyd probably ask for.

Why would they take that?
If they wouldn’t take Ellsbury, Buchholz, and others…why would they take those 5 guys?
My guess? It would take Wood, Aybar, Weaver, and Adenhart. And even then they might want more. No way.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

Dreaming about the best young cheap players on other teams is like....
… fill-in-the-blank Farrah Fawcett poster joke. They are the least available players in the Major Leagues, and we won’t get them.

Even more realistically
To trade with the Marlins for one of the very best young players in the game today that is signed at a discount through 2014 would require inexpensive, young, Major League talent. Since we’re playing “what if” in this thread, the Marlins most likely would insist on a package that starts with Santana, Kendrick, and either Weaver or Saunders, and then at least two of our highest rated prospects.
So taking this one step further, let’s say we gut the minor leagues and somehow get Ramirez. Then in 2013 when he announces that he’s signed with Boras and wants “ARod money”….you know at least $28m per year, does Arte declare that signing Hanley is the “#1 priority” – but in the end let’s him walk for the two draft choices? (But the good news is that Brandon Wood will still be in AAA in 2014 and really, really, really is ready for a full-time job as the starting SS).
Since we’re still in the “dream sequence” – and at the risk of pissing off most of the regular posters on the board, if the franchise were willing to do all of the above to get a Hanley Ramirez type player, then why would’nt Arte have just spent the money, still protected the farm and signed Tex in 2008?
Sorry – I forgot – we have Kendry and do not need Tex. ;-)

We are talking about Hanley Ramirez... do it!
I would start by offering this package:
Wood (if anyone still want him), Weaver, Kendrick and Conger.

Ok... now let's get realistic
The Angels are not going to do ANYTHING in the offseason…
Fuentes is going to be a Cardinal
Manny is going to the Dodgers
Dunn is going to Washington
Peavy will stay in San Diego
And Juan Rivera is an Angel. Yee-hah!

Because breaking your leg in winterball
Means you’re injury prone.

And the love/hate relationship with Johnny Rivers continues...
Put me down as “indifferent” with a side of three-good-months.

Never said he was injury prone
I was just pointing out there is an opposite direction Mr Rivera can go other than “25 home runs awesome sauce omg yay!”

Now that is true.
I think it’s really hard to project how he’ll do. Now that said, I still like the signing, it seems really low-risk high-reward to me :)

do you just come here to be a buzzkill?

I've been a long-time Angel fan.
Maybe not as long as some, but long before the Halos were considered contenders.
Stoneman might not have been the greatest gm ever, but he certainly wasn’t the worst. And although I hated the GM Jr. signing, there were plenty of moves and signings he made that were worthwhile.
So far i have been happy with the Ninja. And I agree that Rivera was a smart signing. I’ll put a little more faith into the abilities of this franchise than most of you.
by Jay Cal on Dec 30, 2008 1:54 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I'm with Jay
I really do think it’s time to put faith in the farm prospects. I think they’re good enough to put the Angels in a good position to win and advance in the playoffs. A relatively healthy Nap, September Brandon Wood, a healthy Aybar, a steady playing time Rivera, and a steady playing time Morales can keep this team ticking without losing draft picks or breaking the bank, especially as possible free agency looms for our best pitcher and hitter.
I’m also real interested in seeing what a post-surgery Vladdy is like.
