Manny if no Teix
if the Angels decide to move on from Teix. i think the only other big bat on the market worth signing is Manny. i personally don't want the Angels to sign him. obviously he can hit, i just don't like all that personal drama that comes along with him. i would rather go after CC. even go after CC and Peavy.
so the question that i want to ask is do you think he would be willing to sign a 4 yr contract with each year only being a team option? no vesting, no mutual, no anything, only a team option every year of that contract. why would any player do that, esecially a guy like Manny? well maybe we give him some crazy money per year. something like 30M year where he and Boras might have to think about it. especailly with the fact that i've read somewhere he wants a 4yr contract no one seems williing to go that far, and that would make him the highest paid player in the league.

So you dont want to sign him
yet you are willing to give him 30/yr?
He is a one dimensional player, but that one dimension is very good.
Around 20/yr 2 years with a third year option is optimal.
He is the best hitter in the market by far.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
i'm trying to say
if were focusing on bats only. i would choose him as the 2nd option over Dunn, Burrell, and the others out there on the FA market. if its 4 yrs and every yr is a TEAM only option, he would have to be on his best behaviour to not have the team decline his option. what he gets in return is a big per yr contract, that makes him the highest paid over A-Rod. boost his ego. if his hitting declines then we opt out of the contract following whatever yr he stinks.
I think I'd rather we sign Dunn than Manny.
Yes, Manny is the better hitter, but I think we need to say no to signing anyone who will cost us a draft pick. We need to reload the farm system.

I kind of want to win a World Series before 2020
How about Major League talent now?
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
At this point..
I don’t care what hitter we get, and long as we get one that can mash.
"Sometimes it looks bad and sometimes it doesn't, but I'm not goint to stop swinging" - Vlad Guerrero
yeah
but do we want the Angels to invest into guys like Abreu, Dunn, or Burrell? 3-5yrs garanteed contracts. my offer would be 4yrs(no team looks like they would offer him this) 30M, with every yr being an team option. so if it doesn’t work out we opt out and look for another solution. instead of being invested into 1 or 2 of the arb free guys that i think doesn’t look too good.
Boras likes control too much
Your idea is definitely intriguing. Basically making someone play in a contract year every year of his contract. And the money per would definitely make them think about it, but I just don’t see Boras going for it. He wants the control and the guaranteed. What if Manny get hurt and is done after 1 season? Boras won’t let that happen. He will get Manny at least a 3/70ish guaranteed. Probably with a 4th year option.
That sounds great...
…until Manny gets a sore throat in September and decides he wants to sit out.
Pass.
I think that Sosh could handle this guy just fine.
There are 2 X factors. 1. Artie. If Artie likes the guy, they will get along fine. Manny just needs attention and Artie is a marketing genius (giving Manny what he needs). 2. Scot Borass. His agent is right down the street and at mucho Angels games. Borass & Manny love money. They both are not about to screw that one up.
Finally, Artie and his Angels have alot of credibility in the sports world. That will go along way.

I am going to continue to say it...
Sign Manny to something ridiculous for 2 or 3 years MAX ! This guy consistantly earns his money particularly during the playoffs. We need somebody who can mash in the postseason and Manny is a lock to do so. And I still do not see why Artie wouldn’t sign Tex & Manny. With those two on the team with Vlad & Torii, Artie would have all the pieces he needs to get to the WS. And he would OWN the Los Angeles Baseball Market. And you have to believe that Artie would love to put the Dodgers in his rear-view mirror. Manny equals media attention, just what Artie needs to make more money on t.v. deals and this could speed up his disire to have his own television network.
Artie is also a baseball lover. With our solid pitching and a lineup which would include Texeira (poster-child for how to play the game & ultra clean image), Manny (the mashing laidback rastamon), Vladdy (everyone loves this guy), and Torii (with his infectous positive attitude) and what you have 4 studs that are all extremely marketable! Sprinkle in Wood (to learn from 4 of the best hitters), Aybar/Izzy, Howie, & Naps and this team will cruise along to the playoffs & WS for years!!
Manny would be huge! We saw all year how Torii helped on the field and in the dugout to loosen things up, but in the playoffs Torii was putting too much pressure on himself and as a result clinched up and couldn’t keep the team loose. Manny’s “don’t give a crap attitude” is what the team needs in the playoffs. Manny Please!
Do this Artie Pulleeze ! ! !

Manny + Teix = $50 mil
That’s a lot of coin, even with our fiat currency. I think Arte will sign only one deal in the $20+ range, and it’ll be for the young guy who can play defense.
Yeah, if Soth were running the show
But wait, then we would’ve already signed Mathis to a 5-year contract at $10 million/per, plus a full no-trade clause and player options extending another three years beyond that…
Light Up That Halo!
sign them both
jack up the prices of the premium seat, where people can afford it. Let Artie pull his marketing genius and while the economy “adjusts” itself, let there be the great American sport of baseball to take our minds off it while we watch our Halos mow & mash their way to the WS.

What about Tex + Dunn?
1) 3B Chone Figgins
2) SS Maicer Izturis
3) 1B Mark Teixeira
4) RF Vladimir Guerrero
5) DH Adam Dunn
6) CF Torii Hunter
7) LF Kendry Morales
8) C Mike Napoli
9) 2B Howie Kendrick
If Vlad needs to DH, then you can put Kendry in RF and have Dunn in LF.
Or case 2 (Brandon Wood is starting SS)
1) 3B Chone Figgins
2) 2B Howie Kendrick
3) 1B Mark Teixeira
4) RF Vladimir Guerrero
5) DH Adam Dunn
6) CF Torii Hunter
7) LF Kendry Morales
8) C Mike Napoli
9) SS Brandon Wood
And in that lineup, if Howie Kendrick doesn’t cut it in the 2 slot, Sosh can try one of his crazy experiments and put Torii Hunter at the 2nd spot and move Howie down to 7th or 8th which would move Kendry and possibly Napoli one slot up.
i'd do this...
Figgins 3B
Dunn LF (for his OBP)
Teixeira 1B
Guerrero DH
Hunter CF
Napoli C
Kendrick 2B
Morales RF
Wood SS
Kotch would've had that.
I actually thought about that
but I just don’t like the idea of having our slowest guy at the top of the order. And I don’t want 85% of his homers to be solo shots.

truth, but his OBP would be amazing there
you could do this too…
Figgins 3B
Kendrick 2B
Teixeira 1B
Guerrero DH
Dunn LF
Hunter CF
Napoli C
Morales RF
Wood SS
it’s basically your “case 2”, but with Naps and K-Mo flipped. Naps should bat higher, as he has more power and run production ability. Kendrick’s numbers would probably shoot up batting in front of Tex, too. in any case, that’s an order i wouldn’t want to face…ever, but one that would be tough to match.
Kotch would've had that.
hijacked my post. lol
it wasn’t to just sign Manny straight out. it was to make sure the Angels are protected from Manny going all soap opera on us. the 4 year deal was all team options so we can cut our loses if he acts up. Manny would be intrigued by the length and per yr value of the contract. he just has to produce without the drama. would he do it? can he keep the drama to a minimum?
