Frankie, Teix and Garland Decline Arbitration
Francisco Rodriguez, Mark Teixiera and Jon Garland declined arbitration, handing the Angels a possible FIVE extra draft picks in the June 2009 draft.
Bankrupt LA-Tribune Times report
In the 2007 draft, the Angels didn't pick until the 58th pick and were then shut out until the 118th pick - the latter (Matt Harvey) didn't sign with us and the former (John Bachanov) needed Tommy John surgery. - so even barring our signing of a free agent or two, or of re-signing Teix (or Frankie in an unlikely scenario), the team will likely be making a selection in the first round for the first time since picking Hank Conger in 2006. The talent infusion to the farm may finally be on the way!

Garland must not have enjoyed his time in Anaheim...?!
Amazing! I will be surprised if he gets the money he thinks he is going to get…so long, farewell!
Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August, er September, er October...? Miss ya Kotch, but Tex is THE man!

Multi-Year
Garland probably doesn’t want to re-up for only one year. That’s always a risky proposition for a pitcher. Someone will give him a deal of at least 4 years, if not more. Even if his annual take is less than what he might have made in arbitration, it won’t be by much, and it will provide him with tremendous security. Really, an easy call on his part.

You are very optimistic
on Garland. I see him walking into ST with a 2 year deal for about $20 million. We’ll see, but this market seems a little deflated. Of course, it only takes one stupid team to pay Garland through the nose – I still say – 2 years/$20 million.

K-Rod....
Please stay away and sign else where. We have more than capable 9th inning guys who won’t give me heart palpitations every friggin’ pitch.
Garland… I liked him. I liked his innings, that’s tough to get out of a # 5, but if he thinks he can get more money else where, by all means. Like I said, I like him, but not at $12M.
Tex…. I miss you, please come back.
Oliver…. Perfect, we needed you back. Thanks for showing us you want to where a Halo jersey.

I think headed into the season ...
We were think Garland was a #3 or 4 pitcher. If I remember, it was Saunders and Santana fighting for the #5 spot.

Whew! Garland declining arbitration will free up dollars. Hope the Angels can add POWER.
1. A power hitter
2. A power starter
3. A power reliever
It would be nice to add Tex, Randy Johnson, and Juan Cruz.

One more: bring back Juan Rivera
Career OPS
JR: .799
GA: .796

Sorry, can't resist...
Have to be ‘that guy.’
JR: <2000 career PA
GA >8000 career PA
And who’s the better defender?
Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

JR is only 30. GA is 36.
A decline in performance is much more likely for GA.
As a LF, Rivera’s RZR is slightly better; .847 vs .837 for GA.
But GA made 31 Out of Zone plays in 689 innings vs just 9 in 307 innings for JR.
RZR stats
According to UZR/150, GA is better than JR.
UZR150
From a stat persepective, GA is superior. I would have to also say from a scouting perspective, GA looked much better in LF. JR often looked like he was lumbering around in LF with limited range.
However, I think from an offensive perspective there is more upside to JR. Angels should also be able to get him at a lower cost than GA.

JR's leg injury was serious...a very bad break.
He was, and for the rest of his career will be, “lumbering around in LF with limited range.” JR, based on his build, will very likely be packing on the pounds in the coming years too.
Serious bone breaks expedite aging in just about anyone (unfortunately, I speak from first-hand experience). JR, due to build and injury history, is an old 30 (31 half way through the 2009 season).
Of course, of more serious concern to any Angel fan interested in keeping JR on the roster is the fact that GMJ is being paid too much money and will be played; JR is interested in an everyday spot. Unless the Angels are willing to sit or scuttle GMJ, the issue of JR returning to the Angels is probably a moot point. He’s as good as gone.
Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

I think Garland will be a Seattle Mariner next season.

on a 4 yr/$80MM deal
Kotch would've had that.

What????
$20mm per, for Garland? That’s nuts. Judy Garland, maybe (in her prime)
JG is a .544 lifetime pitcher with a 4.47 ERA. About the only thing he does really well is eat innings.
$20mm??

Aw
cute, it doesn’t understand sarcasm!
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

thanks for that
it was more a comment on the M’s stupidity… they gave out some really stupid contracts this last offseason…
Kotch would've had that.

Garland reminds me of Jeff Suppan
http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/suppaje01.shtml
Similar type pitchers: throw lots of innings but give up runs.
My guess: Garland signs with either the Mets or the Cardinals. 3-year deal for $30 million. (Or 2 years for $20 million, 3rd year being a team option or a vesting option). Garland will benefit going over to the NL.

I won't be crying over Garland's departure...
Just as I wasn’t celebrating his arrival.
I like the Suppan comparison, too. You’re right, a couple of laboring journeymen.
Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

Garland and GA
Royals with Coco Crap next year.

I wouldn't wish that on GA.
GA is and always has been a class act. He deserves better than the Royals.

Lots of draft picks
That’s a very good thing. Of course I’ve read that the talent level in this draft is rather low compared to the last one. Maybe that’s just top talent level and there will still be decent depth, so we’ll see. It’s been a bummer that since they started doing more coverage of the draft in 2007 the Angels haven’t had hardly any high picks to analyze. That will most likely change this year (although I’ll still take Teix back, thank you very much).
I feel the need, the need...for speed!

ESPN reporting ...
Cards are interested in Garland.
Anyone think that is a good fit for him?? They are touting their pitching coach (Duncan)’s ability to work with none other than Jeff Weaver as signs Judy might be helped by a move there.

The Cardinals are the standard stopping point...
…for anyone who has EVER worn an Angel uniform. So I’m sure he’ll fit right in…

Thank God
Garland rejected. I was worried he might accept if he felt the market for him to be thin.
