Winter Meetings:
Good day all,
I'm beyond excited for the winter meetings to begin today! And I imagine there is going to be a lot of chatter this week, so I propose we use this post strictly for the winter meeting week... if you all want to keep each story completely separate, cool, just a thought.
Anyways, I came across this shit on mlbtraderumors.... God I hope not. Not even at half the salary.

i saw that too
i think that because we have Figgins playing 3B, everybody assumes that every possible available 3B is on our radar.
don’t read into it.
Kotch would've had that.
K-Rod
I think it’s funny that the Mets are offering a three-year deal to Frankie, which is what the Angels offered over a year ago (3-years, $34 mil). Suck it, Frankie.
Tigers tried to get Napoli
Here’s an interesting note, from MLBTR:
“Also, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick notes that the Tigers considered trading for Angels catcher Mike Napoli before they acquired Laird. The price for Napoli was too high.”
I wonder who the Ninja asked for in return. Any speculation?

I was just about to post this......makes me sick (naturally) that the Angels would even think about trading Napoli.
But I liked the fact that the Angels consider Nap as a high valued player.

The Tigers inquired
and the Angels gave a stupidly high price. That means that anybody can ask, but Naps isn’t going anywhere.
Kotch would've had that.

I don't think
That the Tigers have MUCH to offer outside of Rick Porcello, who’d never be exchanged for Naps.
I don’t think we’re in a position to be trading Napoli at all, as Mathis has proven he’s not a starting MLB catcher.
I scrapped this off SI.com with a dull knife:
Peavy on Angels’ radar
08:34 AM ET
Don’t discount the Angels as a player for Jake Peavy, with the chips – young shortstop Brandon Wood, righty Ervin Santana – to give to San Diego. They’d love to use Chone Figgins as their Tony Phillips, playing various positions, so Colorado third baseman Garrett Atkins could be on the radar. Catcher Jeff Mathis is trade bait.
Boston Globe
I don’t see the Angels giving up Santana, but you never know. What does the Boston Globe know anyway?

Ervin
why would the Angels trade Ervin when he has showed signs of being a dominant pitcher. plus he never really has been hurt. inexpensive young probably can be a dominant pitcher for a more expensive est dominant pitcher. that makes no sense. these writers suck. they should be fired.
lets
not go that far yet. lets see ervin build on 08 before we start saying that stuff.
Interesting no HH's are disputing the "Jeff Mathis is trade bait" part.

No disputing it...
…but let’s be honest, we’re not going to be catching much more than a guppy with young Jeff
I see red people
Mathis for Jesus
Ruth and a combination zombie of Ty Cobb and Betty Page
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
He is trade bait for sure.
But I don’t think anyone is biting.

Mathis
i might be the only fan in here for Mathis, but as long as a Catcher can D up then he will have a career in this league. theres alot of hitting C that can’t play and D or call a game so they get moved to another position. yes Napoli is the starter here, but there is nothing wrong with having a backup like Mathis. especially with Napoli’s history of injuries. i know hitting he sucks, but he’s still young might adjust. its not like he’s expensive yet or ever.
Then he needs to
learn how to throw to the second baseman and not the centerfielder.

your right
but its not like he’s had a history of this. he’s always showed his defensive skills at every level. in 07 he was excellent in my opinion.
Mathis makes the occasional athletic play
but I haven’t seen much good defense from him. Mostly, he’s erratic, especially throwing the ball. And, of course, he just doesn’t hit…at all.
Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third, and let's go win.

Despite my tendency to like sinkerballers...
I have to agree. I like Santana’s stuff, his youth, and his new-found composure. Peavy’s a good pitcher, don’t get me wrong, but I like Santana’s upside more.

EXACTLY
The writer is all: Lookie lookie, I know players on teams other than the StrokeSox, I is a professional sports guy reporter!
Crap. Rays have interest in Juan Rivera. (source: LA Times)
JR would have been a nice, inexpensive option in LF for the Angels. Due to the leg injury and limited playing time, he probably only gets a 2-year deal worth about six to eight million dollars (total, not per year).
He may be an Angel yet.
Relatively cheap 20+ HRs w/o ‘roids, decent BA, good attitude, strong arm,….. don’t grow on trees.
If the Angels sign him, it may force GMJr to decide it’s time to leave.
LOL-Rod
http://www.metsblog.com/2008/12/08/relief-pitcher-mets-offer-k-rod-a-2-yr-deal/
Mets offered a 2-year, $12 mil/per deal.
wondering
if he’s honestly going to get anything beyond 3 yrs? nothing close to the 15M he wanted. he hit the market at the worse time. i wonder if someone fires an agent over this? why would the Angels even put that offer they had last yr back on the table? i hope not. i hope its just all the FO just playing nice with K-Rod so they can help him land somewhere else.
Angels
I don’t know if the Angels would still accept K-Rod back at 3-years, $34 mil or not. The closer market has obviously changed. I mean, I wouldn’t mind him coming back at that deal. I wonder if the Angels, though, have just moved on completely from him.
If I’m Frankie, I’d be pushing my agent to check with the Angels. It’s more guaranteed money (than the Mets’ two-year offer) and I know what I have – a good team with a good manager that values my role with a club in a pressure-less city. And the Angels aren’t chokers.
he might regret not accepting arbitration
as a backup. Could have given him another year to wait when the economy is better and the closer market is player friendly rathen then the opposite. He’d probably get $13-14M in arbitration.
Go Angels!
K-Rod
thats what i was thinking. maybe accept arbitration and wait till next year. only thing that can go wrong is an injury. i know thats a big deal for a pitcher but man it seems like the market is over saturated with quality relievers and with the economy. i think he got bad advice from his agent about his value. even with the a good economy i don’t think he would have gotten 5/75. someone might have but he doesn’t realize he’s just a 1 innnig pitcher. wake up.
Thought this was interesting...

i saw that too
whats the point?
obviously, acquiring Young would mean that we’re making some trades, but who goes? Figgins? Aybar? Wood?
i dunno… it just seems kinda weird to me.
Kotch would've had that.
I agree
I thought it was kind of bizarre…I just dont see the Angels trading good, young pitching within the division and the Rangers trading Michael Young to 08 AL West Champs. Maybe they are thinking of a more permanent move of B Wood to 3B? Trade bait for middle infield? This week is such a great teaser for getting amped up for the Spring!

Goodbye Tex
LAS VEGAS – He is a decision-maker for a team that wants to be in the mix for free agent Mark Teixeira, but he has no illusions regarding the chances that Teixeira will sign with his team.
"I think he’ll sign with the Red Sox," the official said. "They want him. They have a good relationship with [agent Scott] Boras, and in the end, they have the dollars to make it happen."
Teixeira............Everything else can wait.
you and me both
but they ignore the fact that Arte, Tony and Boras have a good relationship as well.
AHHH!! this whole thing is killing me.
Kotch would've had that.
by howiestheman on Dec 9, 2008 10:05 AM PST up reply actions
He's gone because the Angels will follow standard protocol...
Make an offer with a two or three day window. Some agents will blink but not Boras, he’ll let it close. I just hope we wait and do it to counter other offers he has in hand, otherwise he is as good as gone.
I think this winter shows that won't be the case
He will be a Bo Suck because Boras wants him to be one and they have more money than the Angels do.
Teixeira............Everything else can wait.
The term....
“salt in the wounds” comes to mind.

Manny
3. How can Scott Boras ask for more than two years for Manny Ramirez?
That’s what Manny wanted when he wanted out of his Boston contract, and while one might wonder about Ramirez’s losing interest, the fact is that he is in better shape now than he was when he signed with the Red Sox. His work at Athletes’ Performance Institute last winter was legendary (API was closed for the week between Christmas and New Year’s and he got a key to get in and do his work), and right now he’s at the API/Dr. James Andrews facility in Gulf Breeze, Fla. “The work Manny did for his core and his agility completely changed him,” says former North Carolina coach Mike Roberts, who oversees much of the baseball-related operations for API. “It is amazing what he’s done for his body.”
One of Manny’s best baseball friends says he believes he will stay focused, especially if he could get to a place like Anaheim. “Right now he’s really obsessed with 600 homers (Ramirez has 527), and when he gets to 600, he may get obsessed with 700.”
Teixeira............Everything else can wait.
i hate him
but i might be okay with that signing

Raul Ibanez
don’t kill the messenger:
from espn
“…Ibanez also is on the radar screen of the Braves and Angels. But the Braves have their pursuit of all their outfield options on hold until they find out whether they can sign pitcher A.J. Burnett. And the Angels would pursue Ibanez only if they fail to land their primary offensive target, Mark Teixeira.”
"why do you we still have quitlin?" -VladdyG
Ibanez really wouldn't be that bad
sure, he’s older, but he’s not really declining. i’d much prefer Dunn, but we could do much worse than Ibanez.
Kotch would've had that.

Yuck
He is the worst defender in left. I do not want this to happen. He is old.
Teixeira............Everything else can wait.
I dont want hit either but . . .
he seems to always rake at the Big A.
Yes he does....but over at Lookout Landing they are wishing him on us because of his horrible defense.
So you know this is a bad omen.
