mattwelch on John McCain

A regular contributor to Halos Heaven, Matt Welch, has a big hit on his hand - his book John McCain: The Myth of a Maverick is selling well on Amazon.com and he recently addressed the Cato Institute about the subject of his efforts.

Matt moved to D.C. a few weeks back - we wish him well and expect to be kept informed of any talk show appearances he is likely to make in the coming 2008 season, er, campaign...

As much as I dislike McCain
Mike Huckabee damn near makes the guy look like a good choice for president.

Too bad for them that neither is getting my vote.

Oh, and this also seems like the best place to say thank you to the County of Los Angeles for mailing my absentee ballot so it arrived the day after Super Tuesday.  Good job, chums.

At least it eventually got to you. Mine never even came. What's up with that!

Did you get your application for it
into the mail so it would reach their office at least seven days before the election?  Because if it wasn't on their desk by January 29th, you are not gonna get one ever.

Yeah!
Whole family registered at the same time. And they were able to do it fine... So it was definitely in by then.

shrug...

The Bright Side
Good thing voting is a farce, or you might have missed out.

by Red114 on Feb 10, 2008 9:00 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

He probably means...
...that rational people don't vote.  The chances that your vote will actually make a difference are so small that, unless your time is completely worthless to you, it's not cost-effective to take the time to vote.

Most people vote either because they are delusional and think their vote actually matters, or to avoid the social stigma of not voting.  I fall into the latter category.

Good column: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/06/magazine/06freak.html

And yet
if 500 more Gore supporters decided their time was worth it in 2000, we would have a much different country right now.

I understand the feeling, however strongly I disagree with it.  If everyone subscribed to the logic presented by this case, then ONE vote would make all the difference in the world as the ONLY vote.

And none of us truly understand how special the right to vote is, and never will until someone tries to take it from us.

huh?

At the risk of starting
a heated debate.  I thought we wanted to avoid political discussion on this site.

I read
some of the articles on his website.  My canidate for President couldn't get arrested.  I am pretty disheartned about it.  It seems Americans are crying for change, but they don't vote that way.

No politics please
I'm a political science professor and HH is my refuge from politics. Then again, though I not a libertarian, I have read Matt's book partially because I like his analysis of the Angels on HH. Good to see him getting national attention.

I agree
Like MJ said:  "Republicans buy shoes too."

I miss Matt's views on the team.  Hopefully he will find time to post later.

With apologies to Bess and Mamie, Cindy McCain would simply be the sexiest presidential wife in history.
