How do you outside-of-OC people follow the Angels?

After being a season ticket holder for the past handful of years I'm starting to go through withdraws knowing that I won't be able to follow the team as closely this year -- in the off season we moved out of state.

We've already signed up for the MLB package from Direct TV, can anyone vouch for that service?  We're going to be subject to black out for the FOX games, right?  But they'll be on the actual FOX station here, correct?  Also, is Gameday worth it ... either just the audio package or the MLB.tv thing?

I am not going to know what to do come April when I'm not heading to the stadium every night or watching from my living room the guys play on the road.  Help a girl out -- share with me your tactics for staying in the know!

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Well, I live in Hawaii
so we get FSN West. But I did get the standard MLB.TV package so I could watch the out-of-market games (The ones that were on KCOP, I guess). MLB.TV is usually the broadcast for the home team, so sometimes you have to listen to other teams' announcers.

But, when FOX has their Saturday games, there are three games and I think the coverage is regional (or just random for Hawaii), so all three of those games are blacked-out on MLB.TV. The MLB Gameday Audio/Radio broadcast still works, though.

MLB.TV is a lot better than just watching the free Gameday. After a while, it kind of sucks to watch the games on the small computer screen, but it's better than nothing.

Hope I could help a fellow female Halo fan out! :)

Maui...
Taht was the best part when I was in Maui on vacation last year... the games started at 4pm.  I could watch half the game while my wife was getting ready to head out to dinner...

I really couldn't beleive that I just flipped over to FSW, and there were the Angels! :-)

Thanks!
Very cool, thanks for the info.  I think we get FSRM (Rocky Mountain) here ... so I have a feeling there's going to be a bunch of Rockies games and not much else.  :(

MLB TV
Hey buddy,

I live out in Philadelphia and have been following the Halos for sometime out of CA.  I bought MLB TV last year, and I was very pleased with it.  Obviously time-wise it's not ideal, but you do what you have to do to follow your team.

If you buy the MLB TV package from ESPN, you can log in from anywhere with an internet connection and watch every game in the majors streaming, with surprising quality.

Hope this helps out,

i did
mlb.tv last season and it was pretty solid.  you gotta take what you can get if you live somewhere outside the oc.  one thing i don't like about mlb.tv is that you dont get any pre or post game stuff.  i'm planning on doing mlb extra innings this year.

Thanks for the info ... I'm only in Mountain Standard time - 1 hour ahead, so not too bad of an adjustment.  :)  I feel for you and your 10pm starts!

Philly!
Wizzdiddly, I have been looking to get together a group of guys to watch the Halos here in Philly, but I cant seem to find that many. You are the first I have met. Interested in grabbing a beer and watching the games this season with another Halo fan?

Used to use mlb.tv
in Atlanta, but now I'm back in socal, so the point is moot.

Also, it's 120$/season now. What the crap is that?

Yeah,
That's almost as much as I paid for the MLB package through Direct TV.  And that's going to be on my nice big flat screen TV ... not just my little computer screen!

DirecTV in WI
I get the Extra Innings package from DirecTV.  You get about 90% of their games (no spring training) but you do NOT get any pre or post game analysis.  They cut it off right after the games end.

by V Hawk Angelorum on Feb 28, 2008 10:19 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Thanks!
This is great to know!  90% of the games isn't too bad ... that does suck about pre/post game coverage though.  I was hoping the the Extra Innings package was worth the cost!

mlb.tv
is the way to go, imo. did the job last year. plus, you get the radio feed, and can listen (most nights) to the post game show with terry...if terry is still doing the wrapup show. mlb extra innings is nice if you know you are going to be home for game time. the fox games, well, considering the cold you described, saturdays are gonna suck a bit come mid-season as you will be unable to get any coverage of the Angels.

I've got a follow up question
I'm going to study abroad in Italy this fall, will I be able to get games on mlb.tv from europe? What about playoff games?

I'm sad I'll miss out on seeing us clinch the division again and hopefully win the series.

MlbTV
I've tried MLB and extra innings over the last 6 years, and I'm happier with the internet package.  I just had too many times where the cable would have intermitent technical problems, and the comcast guys were never able to really figure out why or fix it.

If you really have to have a clear, HD picture, you'll have to do cable.  I can live with lower quality picture on internet.  I've helped things a bit by buying nice new LCD widescreen monitor, but it's still not TV quality.  It's more reliable, and very nice to be able to watch archived games at any point in the season.

MLBTV/XMRadio
When I'm at home or travelling both inside or outside the US, MLB.TV is a godsend.  If I'm in the US and do not have broadband available, XM Radio is the alternative.

Oh btw
I also still own season tickets and try to make it back for 20-25 games each year.  Then I also pick up games at Yankee Stadium (this year in July and August) and Camden Yard.  I won't go to Fenway...I just hate thiose guys way too much.  Plus I hate that firetrap bandbox.

xtra innings
I don't think the game  count is as high as 90%.  I believe it is closer to 70.  Usually get 2 of the 3 games in a series, but my biggest disappointment has  been they don't change the schedule in September to accommodate the division races.  You can see the schedule on the directtv.com website (although 2008 has not been posted)

Radio
I actually prefer baseball on the radio compared to television. I listen to 75% of Angels game on the audio on mlb.com and then I pay for MLB.TV the final month or so. It's a lot easier being an Angels fan in Idaho today than it was in the 70s, 80s and 90s. With the Internet and blogs and access to all types of news stories, out of state Angels fans can follow their team to the same extent as those living in OC (except of course when it comes to going to the Big A).

My Method
Get Directv and get a family member's address in LA to use as your service address. You can have your mailing address go to your home or go to online billing. Getting in-home service is impossible, but I get all of the LA stations. Hope that helps?

How does that work?
Don't get me wrong, this sounds like a killer idea.  But... DirecTV doesn't know you're not in So Cal when they install the little dish on your roof?

by Grich4mvp on Feb 28, 2008 11:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Two households
I told them I have two households (which I do, really, honest). You use your physical address for the installation (if you aren't willing to do it yourself) and then switch the service address when you feel it's been "long" enough. (That's totally a subjective amount of time)

If I need a new receiver or service I change the service address to where I am and then call in for a service or to mail new equipment. Then I change it back a few weeks later.

If anyone needs a clever Unix Admin I'd happily move back to LA. :-D

This
happened to us right after we moved out of state.  Accidentally, they messed up and kept our billing address in So Cal, even though they had our service address in Utah.  We had FSW and all the LA local channels for a few months until we finally called because I couldn't stand everything being an hour off.  But yeah, I was thinking that I might "switch" our address back.  :)

Video Quality of MLB.tv
Anyone vouch for that?  a friend had it last year and it froze often and was very herky-jerky.

by Grich4mvp on Feb 28, 2008 11:31 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I've done both
MLBTV usually has some of the games that aren't on Extra Innings.  This year I got a slingbox so I can watch day games while at work or while traveling.

Extra Innings is superior, not just because of picture quality (obviously), but I'm so used to a DVR now that I hate watching television without it.  The slingbox will control my DVR as well.  Plus, if I get home late, I have to start watching MLBTV from where the game actually is at the time.  With EI and my DVR, I can start from the beginning and catch up as the game goes on.

And you won't get the Angels' saturday day games on Fox unless you're still on the West Coast (or near it).  We almost always get Cubs or Sox, and no other games are available at that time on either EI or MLBTV.  But overall, MLBTV will carry  a larger number of games.  I'd say EI is in the 80% range, while MLBTV is more in the 90-95% range.

Good to know
Thanks!  We're in Utah, so close to the west coast ... so we might be in luck for some of those Saturday Fox games.

DirecTV EI Package
Last yr was my first yr and I loved it.  The only games (IIRC) that you miss is the occasional Sat or Sun game.  During the week, its all good.  Just DVR when you can't watch realtime and you get to see the majority of the season.  I can't comment about MLBTV cause I've been satified enough with DirecTv that I haven't looked at other options.

Lightupthe halo
We are in Montana, and our experience with MLB.com has been shit. Every game with Seattle is blacked out - considered "in market" (as though we would drive there) and half the other games were not available. We are on DirecTV as well, so make sure whatever you do, you get a clear understanding BEFORE you $ub$cribe.

CAUTION: 99% of the customer service reps have NO CLUE what they are talking about!

If you achive success, please report back so I can subscribe as you have!
Thanks

Wait ...
So do you have a beef with MLB.com service or the DirectTV service?

I agree that DirectTV CS reps have no clue what they're talking about ... that's how we ended up with the "mistake" that kept us with the LA channels even though we were living in Utah already.

I wish that DirectTV would hurry up and post the 2008 MLB schedule ... I can't find it on the website.  I guess this will be a learning season for us, as we've already subscribed to the MLB EI package, and supposedly they don't do refunds.

I'll let you know how it works out!

MLB.TV
For what it's worth, in Scotland I LIVE for MLB.tv. It's cheap, you get every game, and the quality is pretty good. I can't live without it.

That said, since you're still in the States, you might experience some of the blackout restrictions other posters have complained about. But for overseas, MLB.tv is a must-have.

Blackout restrictions
is exactly what I'm worried about.  I do live in a state that doesn't have an MLB team, so it will be interesting to see how they handle it.  The closest are the Rockies and the Diamondbacks, both of which are NL, so hopefully it won't bother us too much.
